Yesterday's potato day went well-I ended up having three yellow potatoes, which actually probably fell within my DD calorie allotment, even though I wasn't counting calories
Scale is down 1.5lbs, which brings me .5lb from my lowest weight point, which was right before I went off plan for the holiday. Very happy to end the year on a positive note! I'm going to do another pd today, but try to eat bigger potatoes/more of them, to get more calories in. I won't be able to hit my UD calories with just potatoes, but I do want to get a bigger distance between yesterdays and today's calories. We may go out for dinner tonight, so I'll just do potatoes until plans change |

Just finished reading this entire thread --- WHAT A RIDE!!!!!
I've decided that since I'm only 2 weeks, 1 day into JUDDD, I stick with it until I'm more established. After reading Dr. J's book, it takes about 3 weeks before SIRT1 to show up. When I do try it, I'll have glucose meter ready!! Subbing so I can keep on learning from all the JB's!! |

I am doing a modified tater UD.
B - 2 eggs, coffee with HWC L - cold boiled taters D - taters of some sort with sala or mustard or maybe the cold boiled tater salad I saw someone listed. I am boiling taters as I type. The gold ones since I like them best. I have some baking taters I can also have if needed. |

We now have dinner plans tonight at a local diner. I had a potato for b-fast and another one for lunch. Supper will probably be a large taco salad-they put it in an edible taco shell bowl
![]() Tomorrow I'll probably do a pd dd and then Wednesday back to normal rotations |

I am having nothing today until dinner, but wanted to add that potatoes in any form have become my obsession.
I will be having only potatoes tomorrow w/ a bowl of black eye peas mixed into my mash tater soup. Then on to my regular JUDDD on the 2nd. |

Grandmother's Hoppin' John
![]() This is also the most popular according to my local newspaper. The fun thing is, you can throw in any kind of sausage or chicken, it is really up to what you prefer. I love it because it reminds me of her. The difference is that Ree makes hers with a whole hamhock & she stir fries her onions/celery in butter plus she simmers in 5 cups of chicken broth instead of bouillon. 3 large sausages, casing removed 4 slices of bacon, cut into pieces 1/2 cup of red onion, chopped 2 tsp. of garlic, minced 1/2 cup of celery, diced 1/2 cup of bell pepper, diced 1 package of black eyed peas 4-6 cubes of bouillon 6 cups of water 3/4 tsp. cumin salt to taste, its best to do this after it has cooked Saute the onion, garlic, celery and bell pepper for 5 minutes. Cook the sausage and bacon. Add all of the ingredients to the crock pot. Cook on high for 4 hours. Most of the juice will be gone, you may have a cup left. Serve immediately on white rice (although my daughter likes brown).

Yep, I fry the onions, celery & bell pepper in butter, too.
I use a few bay leaves...thyme... sometimes some "poultry seasoning" (which has sage). Never tried cumin (but I wouldn't mix cumin & sage!!! )I add tomato paste & molasses to make the broth richer. ![]() Last edited by piratejenny; 12-31-2012 at 12:08 PM.. |

PJ, I think molasses does sound yumm too.
I think the cumin must be a southern type thing. I saute my veggies in a bit of bacon drippins. Maybe I will try butter. |

Yesterday started out as a potato hack day but then we went out for supper so I counted it as an UD. I was pleasantly surprised to see another .5 drop this morning, bringing me down to my pre-holiday eating weight of 149lbs
The potato hack definitely seems to do something magical for me Today will be a potato DD (3-4 yellow potatoes, fat free hot cocoa and then water and diet soda), and then tomorrow I'll transition into my normal JUDDD rotations. This is the second time I've done a few potato hack days and I really do think it triggers weight loss. I'll probably incorporate 2-3 potato only days into my monthly JUDDD rotations |

So, I've spent the last couple of days reading this whole thread. Super interesting! I am back to JUDDD and have decided to give the Potato Hack a go!
I plan to do 4 days (T-Fri), and see how it goes. I did start my day off with coffee and 2 T of hwc. But it will be four hours since the coffee that I start in on my taters. I have boiled up 3 pounds of red creamers and they're in the fridge chilling away right now. I've also got a couple of russets ready to be cooked and a whole bunch of large red potatoes to cook, too. I have some malt vinegar and plan to eat my taters with either vinegar & salt or broth & salt. Today is supposed to be a DD for me, but I haven't decided yet whether to keep to rotations these 4 days or to just eat to appetite. I'll still keep track of calories, but not sure how the rotation piece will fit in. So there's the plan. Bring it!!!!

Hi all you SPUDDDs!
![]() Just wanted to pop in here and report something that's been interesting since I did my potato hack early in December. Here is the link to my summary post in this thread: A DD Hack While I enjoyed the potatoes and I did see significant improvements in my bg response after eating them, the hack didn't seem to generate any immediate short-term improvements for me after I stopped eating the potatoes. So a couple of weeks later (now) after a return to my normal LC lifestyle, I've noticed a number of changes. These COULD be due to getting over a cold and decreasing exercise for the last couple of weeks but...I'm not really sure but I'm curious whether others have noticed anything farther down the line. - Cravings for sugars and starches have all but disappeared. While I had them before Xmas, they just seem to be absent now. I even have to keep reminding myself to eat my lunch fruit. I had a wine tasting party with lots of goodies, sugar free and otherwise. I sampled but didn't overeat as I normally would have. - Blood sugar swings after drinking alcohol seem to be significantly reduced. I usually get really "snacky" the day after I drink, regardless of whether I am hungover or not, which generally leads to overeating--usually things that I shouldn't, like nuts and cheese. Hasn't happened through the holiday season. - Hunger generally has been more under control. I seem to be eating less, wanting less, and needing less food to be satisfied. If I feel hungry, I seem to be eating just enough, and low carb, high fat "just enough". - The real kicker: weight. After my hack (4 days), I didn't seem to notice a big change in the way my weight was reacting to non-low carb foods, alcohol, or too much of anything. I was hovering between 146-151, the higher end after the weekends or time off and the lower end on the weekends, Saturday generally being my low weigh-in day. I generally didn't dip below 145-6 and if I did, it wasn't for long. This was true before the hack and immediately afterwards. Starting about a week before Xmas, I noticed my weekly weigh-ins starting to reflect a lower weight. The first week, 144. The second week, 142-143. This week I was solidly in the 142's and this morning, after apparently dumping some water from NYE festivities, 141. I haven't actually been at this weight for quite some time. Now as I said, I've been ill and not necessarily eating or exercising normally but usually when I'm sick, I eat myself out of house and home and GAIN 5 pounds. Boredom more than anything, I think. These changes seemed to start prior to my illness, though, and seem to be continuing now, after I am back to normal. This week, I'll probably be eating much closer to what is normal for me and next week or possibly this weekend I'll be exercising again so I'll be curious whether this sticks. Just thought I would share and see if anyone else has experienced anything similar. And yes, my feet are definitely a half to a full size smaller. Still. ![]()

I am not sure Shelbyla. With all the crazy Christmas eating it is hard to separate it all out. I notice that I am different around chips after the hack. I actually forgot that I had put some out in New Years Eve and that has never happened to me before. Maybe I have finally had my fill of potatoes. The Christmas weight did come off really fast but not sure if that was just because I had just gained it.
![]() I was planning to do the potato hack for my DD's only now but I am most of the way through my UD today and am not hungry so I think I will just have a few spuds and call it another DD. Strange that I am not hungry. Hope I am not coming down with anything. I am considering maybe doing the potato hack again until the weekend as that will most likely bring me back into my maintenance weight range again. It is hard to resist the quick weight loss this hack provides. I would certainly enjoy going back to maintenance calories... If I do do the hack for a few days I will pay a bit more attention to how it affects my cravings and weight afterwards. I wish my feet would go down a size! They are a 10 and it can be difficult to get my size sometimes

Hiya, Hackers!
So I am almost done with my second full day on a potato hack. Just thought I'd post a little update... Starting weight yesterday was my highest ever. Boo! 210.2 at about 10am yesterday. Brekkie was coffee w/2T hwc, lunch was 12oz baby red creamer potatoes w/ malt vinegar and salt, dinner was 6oz red potatoes mashed up with chicken broth. 555 calories for the day, and I must say I peed a ton throughout the day. This morning (6am) I weighed 205.2. No kidding! A five-pound loss on the scale. That was exciting and very motivating!! Today's brekkie was coffee w/ hwc just like yesterday, lunch was 14oz russet potatoes mashed up with chicken broth, dinner was a 6oz red potato, peeled and dry-fried in a pan with s & p. I tried frying up another and seasoning it differently, but it was not very tasty, so it ended up in the trash. Total calories right now are at 605! Not much of a rotation. I'm going to try to eat a few more little chilled creamers later, but right now I'm just not hungry. I'm a little nervous about eating so little today. I'll clearly need to do better tomorrow. I might add some more hwc to my morning coffee just to up my calories some. I've been careful both yesterday and today to have several hours in between finishing my coffee and eating my tater lunch, just to make sure I'm not still processing any protein or fat once the taters hit my gut. Sorry for the ramble...I'm just trying to get my thoughts on this out there. Happy SPUDDDing, BUDDDs!! ![]() |

Andrea!
![]() Shelby, I noticed the same thing with cravings, although, mine are typically for nuts & wine instead of sugar. I enjoyed my hack so much, that I have started adding taters in my daily cuisine. I am wondering if I should only do the hack once in a while??? It is quite tempting to go back and do it for a few days each week. The weight loss the 2nd time was not as great as my 1st time, (3 lbs) but I am loving the feeling of peace with the hunger monster. ![]() |
