20 Weeks (5 Months) on JUDDD -- Early Edition

Today I weighed in at 257 lbs, a loss of 3 lbs this week, 33 lbs total, 29 lbs of which were lost with JUDDD at a rate of 1.45 lbs a week.

My normal weigh in would have fallen on Thanksgiving morning this week and since I'll be rushing around too much to write a post--and none of you would have time to read it anyway--I thought I'd jump the gun a little bit, here. Especially since this is a new low and a new decade for me--my old set-point seems firmly in the rear view mirror now.

As always, here are the weekly ups and downsides for those considering JUDDD:

Downsides

Return of Challenging Down Days. I'm not sure what happened to those easy breezy down days when I was good to go on a cup of coffee all day, flying around like an energized bunny. Hunger has now evolved into a different animal, yet again. Not only don't I feel hunger pains anymore--I don't even really get a growly tummy. Now I mostly feel this nagging emptiness and light-headedness which is easy to ignore if I'm cleaning the house or something, but quite vexing when doing work that calls for concentration. Even so, I am meeting my writing word count goals even on down days now. DDs have become very productive and totally manageable. They are just still sometimes cranky-making.

Increased Alcohol Sensitivity. I've always had a weird relationship with liquor. I get drunk very easily--very quickly and on only a few sips--in a way that my body weight should make impossible. Since JUDDDing, the reaction seems more pronounced and I have noticed that champagne seems to bring about major water retention in me. (Should this be possible? Isn't the main problem with alcohol is that it dehydrates you?) Anyway, I probably won't stop drinking it when the occasion calls for it, but if I'm not feeling it, I'm not going to touch it.

Upsides


Pain Free. Whatever the heck was going on with my mystery illness seems to have cleared up completely. I felt a sharp pain one night in the upper right hand quadrant of my abdomen one night, then the pain totally faded away over the next three days and now I'm good as new.

Medium Days. These kinds of days tend to stall lots of people on this board, but every time I've had to use one to change my rotations, I see good results, so I just thought I'd mention that.

Thanksgiving. I'm going to have one. It's going to be awesome. I'm not going to count calories or carbs or anything else. It may slow down my weight loss for a week. I don't care, because I have absolute confidence I will keep up my rotations. Thank you JUDDD!

Stress Free. Never before have I lost weight during deadline hell. Never! But I'm doing it. I have to finish my first draft of my last Cleopatra Selene book by December 1st. I'm working like a madwoman to finish and it occurred to me that I am more confident I will not see a net gain of weight over the holidays than I am in finishing my manuscript on my publisher's schedule. This made me laugh like a hyena! I am not stressed about my diet. Down Days are ridiculously easy to plan. And instead of asking my DH to cook me something diet friendly or weird on my up days, I tell him the sky is the limit.

Improved Fitness. I haven't been doing much of any exercise at all lately, but yesterday I ran up the stairs to grab a research book. I hit the top stair, stopped, and asked, "Did I just run up the stairs?" I wasn't even winded!

I wouldn't mind having some of your alcohol sensitivity.

Great update, and I love that you've had a good week healthwise as well as having a nice drop on the scale. Beautiful.

Yes, JUDDD makes us all thankful for thanksgiving....and still manage to lose!

Great progress so far! I'm always worried about DDs - I hate being hungry. And if I'm not hungry, i'm weak I've upped the supplements that I take, so over time (i'm still new) I can let you know if they help or not!

I'm all caught up now on weeks 18-20. WTG Steph on the new decade!!! Love it!

I know what you mean about Thanksgiving (ours was Oct, and I felt the same as you) and what you said in week 19 about the paralysis of choices. I'm planning a brunch, and I brought out the pre-weight loss cookbooks! (before there was LC, there was LF... and all my yummy books went away...)
Now I'm dying from all the choices, but so happy to rejoin the land of the happy foodies again!

Steph, I wonder whether DDs and UDs ever settle or whether they continue to change and evolve forever and ever and ever. Good for you for going with them and not against them.
I cannot, cannot believe how much you've lost. You, like Dawn, like a good number of juddders, are such a testament to sticking to it day by day.

I'm so happy to see this early edition!

Seriously ... let's take a moment and deeply appreciate this. You are in deadline mode ... AND losing weight. You are going to have a fabulous, guilt-free Thanksgiving with the knowledge that it will in no way derail your progress on any sort of permanent basis.
Is that incredible, or what?

I wish I could figure out why some DDs are effortless and others are just to be gotten through with gritted teeth and the knowledge that we'll eat tomorrow! One thing I have noticed for me is that the higher the up day (including UUADs of course), the easier the down day, in general. What will help weight loss the most might be a different thing....

Have a wonderful, fully enjoyable Thanksgiving!

Between you and all the other BUDDDs celebrating good news, I am doing the Happy Cha-Cha-Cha all over the house! (the cat thinks I am playing with her - she is racing around like a maniac - happiness is a gift that just keeps on giving)

It is curious, why some blocks of DDs are nbd and other blocks are miserable. We fems know, and can chart, the one or two 'starving' DDs or UDs that are hormonally induced each month. But why are some longer periods so ?

Of course I have a theory...

Watching patterns, I found myself suspecting those uncomfortable DDs are a sign our bodies have not yet forgotten the bad old days of stress-eating. My non-hormonal, hungry DDs always seem to coincide with family emergencies. And, since I decided to treat them as old habits that no longer apply, they seem to be weakening.

I wonder if what you are feeling is the siren call of former 'got to get this book finished' noshing? If so, it sounds like you are beating it into submission!

Steph this is wonderful another 3 lbs is just brilliant. Shame the DDs are giving you some grief, but you aren't allowing them to derail you and that is a real triumph.

This is really a novelty. Usually I am a mindless eating machine while I work at this pace. Instead, I think I have now found the solution! Where has JUDDD been all my life?

It was so weird this week that I wanted to revisit this comment. After Thanksgiving day, I thought the next DD would be a snap. It wasn't. I was actually pretty hungry. But the rest of the day the DDs were utterly effortless, so I wonder if it's like a switch. Once your body senses that there's a feast it doesn't quite want to let go.

Pffft, hardly saving the world...I wish. More like getting to meet amazing people and learn amazing things and eat amazing foods and have the best time of my life helping others.

Me? I'm good. Life is uncertain. I have no house and no plans to get a house, we'll be living with friends (various ones) while we fundraise to go to South Africa again--hopefully for three months this time. So yeah.

But enough about me...this is about you. I'm so pleased for you. I really hoped you'd stick with it. And you did! Amazing progress, and so wonderful to be happy with the plan that you're on, isn't it? So wonderful to know that all you need to do is keep doing what you're doing, until you get to your goal. And then you get to stay there. All with no muss, no fuss.
