DD Winter Comfort Yummies

I just noticed I have lost all my cravings for DD items such as cottage cheese/tuna/dill pickle salad, half and half diet "cream" sodas, any kind of salad in fact, protein powder smoothies, etc. I see a pattern here...all these are cold meals and I love them in the summer.

With the change in weather, now I need an arsenal of fairly easy warming DD ideas. I want to keep it as simple as possible on my DD. I don't mind an occasional meal to cook ahead of time and then microwave to heat up.

I am looking for your fave winter comfort foods that are compatible with DD, and that are quick and easy. I know you ladies never disappoint!!!!

Trader Joe's has wonderful chicken broth at 5 cals/cup. I also buy Pacific's brand of mushroom broth at 5 cals/cup. I heat up broth, add a drained package of miracle rice, and swirl in 1/4 cup of cheezy eggbeaters and 1 TBS of tostitos salsa con queso. Cheezy hot delicious soup for about 40 calories. Sometimes with the mushroom broth I add mushrooms I sauteed in a little broth. so warm and satisfying.

Soup & Chili (MY fav)

I have made a bunch of fun soup & chili ideas from pinterest. One cup of either is usually around 100 calories or less.

Also, enjoy hot teas and s/f cocoa.

I love cream of wheat. a 3 tbp(dry) serving, with SF Torani is about 120. Not low-carb, but fills me up for a long time, and soooooo comforting to me!

Hmmm...what makes me feel like Fall/Winter.....

Anything with pumpkin, like smoothies. I've seen some cool recipes around.

Anything with squash...like spaghetti squash used like pasta (with veggie sauce and a little parm), or butternut squash with a little butter.

Carrots sauteed with a little butter. I still like to use a bit of butter on DDs.

SOUPS! Chili, beef stew, corn chowder (can be made lower fat), veggie soup (throw everything in a crock pot with some EVOO and call it good )

Apples! You can make a low fat crumble or make your own chunky, warm apple sauce-like dessert and sprinkle a few grahams on it or a tbl of almonds/granola. Oooooh maybe mix with greek yogurt!

I'll think about this some more...

I just picked up some pre-made soups at Fresh and Easy. 130 calories per cup for split pea with ham or chicken noodle, and they're fresh and just need to be microwaved. Of course you know I'm going to say chili, but that's year round for me. Broth with serranos or hot sauce. Anything warm and spicy.

soup soup soup
premake and freeze some freezer baggies of them to grab on down days.
chicken and veg stew
guiness beef stew
I can be very happy with a bowl of lentils cooked to smoosh and heavily sea salted
split pea
sweet potato with caramelized onions
knock-off olive garden zuppa toscana is easy with ground meat, onion, kale, garlic, pepper flakes, chicken broth, and a little almond milk
pumpkin sausage soup
white or red chili
also, hot salads. my mom could live on greens with hot ground beef or turkey, some beans, salsa and greek yogurt, plus hot sliced beets if they are around.
Easy to take and reheat your meat/salsa/bean/veg combo (freeze portions in small freezer bags) and dump on greens with a dollop of yogurt
crockpots are your best friend for coming home to dinner and for preplanned leftovers:
meatloaf or sloppy joe filling
pork roast with apple and parsnips
pot roast with veg
soak beans overnight in crock, drain, refill with water, bay leaf and onion and cook all day. they freeze beautifully.
sausage and peppers (have you seen all the lowcal natural chicken sausages at Costco?)
more soups.
all of the roasts make for great leftovers, even throw a portion in a cup of broth for a quick lunch soup.

The Better Than Bullion beef is 10 calories for a tsp. I fill the mug with boiling water and sip away when I'm freezing, which sadly is now on UDs as well, but DDs, that is horrendous! My hands were so cold yesterday they looked bluish and were aching! I just wrapped my hands around the mug of broth and I got warmer (I drank some too)

Chicken curry hit the spot.

Soups and stews! And definitely with the curry. I particularly like hot and spicy, like curried flavors or Thai soups like Tom Yum, etc. Spicy stuff helps warm me up even more. Thinking of making a curry spiced chicken soup with butternut squash.

We are just coming out of winter now, I started Juddd in winter so it sure made those cold DD's FREEZING!!!!

I always had 20 cal miso soup sachets around, lots of coffee, and at night would steam vegies and cover with a chilli sauce (just onion, garlic, herbs, chilli, diced tomatoes simmered down. Low cal and a great topper!)

Minestrone soup is a must in winter. Filling, healthy and easy to freeze. I make a huge pot with loads of low cal vegies (like cabbage, celery, cauliflower) and some higher too (peas, beans ect..) and split the soup into containers in 100 cal portions. Freeze and when nothing else will do, a perfect dinner!

I make a hot protein shake out of my coffee..... it's yummy. I make my coffee like normal, pretty strong. Dump it into the blender. Then I add a scoop and a half of vanilla flavored protein powder, some cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg, some coconut oil, and some stevia. I also sometimes add some plain hershey's baker cocoa to it. Once in awhile I add some nut butter, like a teaspoon. I have that for breakfast on a lot of days, DD and UD both - just varies as to what I add to it due to calories. I need my protein in the morning and I need my coffee! LOL

Barb, Fresh and Easy is an awesome store, sort of like a small Whole Foods. It's a chain around here. Maybe they're local. They do a lot of fresh, pre-made meals with good ingredients, that you can just reheat.

C'Marie, thanks for the idea! So you make this as a hot drink/smoothie then, similar to the Bullet proof coffee it sounds like. I am sooooo going to try that!! I really need my protein in the morning too.

New hot and yummy I discovered...

1 cup chicken broth + 1 TBSP apple cider vinegar--steaming hot. Has a bit of a tang and tastes way less salty.

Ouiz, I just used this as inspiration and made a cheese soup that was YUUUUMMMMMYYYYY! Chicken broth made from powdered bouillon and 2T Tostitos salsa con queso. 45 calories, spicy, satisfying, really, really tasty. Thanks for the idea!

I have a recipe for Russian Tea my mom used to drink when I was a little girl (50+ years ago). I only swapped out the sugar for Splenda.

1 20-oz container of Tang. (They do make a SF Tang, but I can't find it.)
1/2 cup Instant tea, unsweetened.
1 cup Splenda (sugar)
1/2 tsp ground cloves.
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon.

2 Tbsp. per serving. I calculated using a recipe builder. It comes out to 21.7 calories per serving, so I rounded up to 22 calories. It would be even less if I could find the SF Tang. So comforting, sweet and spicy!
