S/O "By the Book"

This was posted in another thread and I didn't want to threadjack.

So when someone does JUDDD by the book, what does that mean exactly?

I have read most of the book and the only thing I can think of is that you need to eat DDs at 20% calories or less and UDs at the limit given by the diet calculator. What am I missing?

The original plan as described in Dr. Johnson's book is pretty simple ... just eat within your UD/DD calories. There are also a lot of experimental tweaks people sometimes try for various reasons, but I'm assuming "by the book" must refer to following the original plan without tweaks?

Yeah, calichris has it right. I guess I am the one who mentioned by the book a couple of times...meaning doing the plan exactly as written. An induction phase of 500 calorie DD, every other day rotations, counting every.single.calorie. on both days, etc.

I do some things that aren't "by the book" for example I have set down days on MWF and set UP days on T-Th-S. Then there is Sunday...which I have done as a Mid Day, a High Day an UUAD, a high fiber day, a high calorie but low carb day and probably a few other tweaks I have experimented with over the 8 months.

I started off doing my DD at 50 carbs or less and my UD at 100-150 carbs. For a while I did a Tim Ferris/Jorge Cruz spin off thing where I would eat high protein breakfasts on both DD and UD and then I would eat one serving of carb on days I worked out 30 minutes or more. (I credit that to very loosely translated Tim Ferris--he eats pizza on heavy gym workout days and drinks wine.)

Now, I do very low carb (Atkins levels) on MWF and on my high days I only eat carbs at dinner--which I think is an idea leftover from Protein Power or maybe it was Sugar Busters???? I can't even remember. But, this plan works pretty well for me. I like it. I can stick to it. I have a core set of about five DD meals that I rotate and reuse so that I don't really have to count calories each day.

I rarely count UD calories, either. But, I know the difference between an UD and an UUAD and by limiting carbs to a certain time frame it helps me keep that in check. Sometimes I go over my approx. 600 calorie DD if I am ravenously STARVING or hormonal. Then, I will eat something else but it HAS TO BE low, low carb. So, basically I have rules of my own that I made up and adapted over time. They aren't JUDDD rules...most of them came from other low carb plans I have tried over the years.

I have said this term, "by the book" referring to folks who JUDDDed perfectly but maybe didn't get the results that most JUDDDers have. They rotated EOD of 500 cals or less, but never really moved much on the scale.

Honestly, I think the term "by the book" sometimes gets used to scold "tweakers" like me!

IMO, there is no ONE "by the book" method.

The 2-week "induction" is the most strict period.

After that, the calculator gives you 24 different ways to JUDDD!!! (4 exercise levels x 6 weight loss percentages.)

And then some people have raw food, vegan, vegetarian, diabetic/low-carb, gluten-free or other restrictions.

In the book, Dr J doesn't say what time you have to stop or start eating, so while DDs seem to average about 36 hours (if you go from the last time you eat on an UD to the first time you eat on the next UD), they can also be significantly shorter or longer.

BUT--when someone describes themselves as following the diet "by the book", I think it generally means they haven't cheated or messed up their rotations--3 UDs in a row, for example!

That's how I take it. I honestly can't say I've followed JUDDD "by the book" because I still haven't read the book.

Dawn! I have Dr. J's book, it's interesting, but most of the 'how to's that I use' are from this board. The book is interesting, but by the very nature of published material - static. I like the dynamic nature of this board where real people are making the best of real situations. Also, this is the friendliest board I've ever been on!
I JUDDD BUDDD's

Well, if Dawn hasn't read the book, and has lost 90 something pounds on JUDDD, then I don't know what to say!

I agree, most everything you need to know is on the Alternate Day Diet website and on this board. I'm still sifting through older posts to find gems, laughs, motivation, etc. Makes me want to respond to posts that are months and months old, but I have so far restrained myself!

Bwahaha! Well, I have read it and can't remember all of the fluff stuff. I just hear some budds say they are faithful to the rotation and I guess that is what I mean when using the term.

Believe me! I take maintenance level every time I have family in town or go on vacay. If I didn't, JUDDD would not be the plan for me.

Well, I read the book after I had lost about 25 pounds- so reading it is not necessary required. The book is basically a bunch of fluff after a while since you really can't fill that many pages with you have an UD followed by a DD- repeat until desired weight loss ocurres I didn't even find the little menus to be very helpful. PJ has a good point since "by the book" still covers a wide range of options. I'll agree that people probably mean faithful rotations with DDs under 500 calories, but "by the book" could mean different things to each person who types it.

Exactly. I don't really understand why anyone could be militant about anything, when you think about it.

Nothing to JUDDD, but fun and simplicity.

I totally agree, Sunday. JUDDD is pretty flexible and it plays nice with other plans, too. I don't really set out to complicate the plan with other rules. My rules are attempts at taming the carb monster and dealing with insulin issues, hypothyroid, PCOS, etc.

To me the the beauty of the simplicity of JUDDD is that it does give so much freedom to flex depending on what is working for you at any given time. I love that about it.

I interpret by the book as following the UD/DD rotation and never varying. This is what I do since it is the easiest way to follow the plan for me. I am set in my ways now and it matters not what you tempt me with, I am not eating it if it is my DD. Everyone around me has figured that out too.
I have tried combining other plans with JUDDD with no more success than plain UD/DD rotations and counting calories. Guess that is pretty much by the book I would say. Simple, easy. Probably too easy so we want to overthink the plan.
