18 Weeks on JUDDD

Today I weighed in at 261 lbs for a loss of 1 lb, 29 lbs total, 25 of them on JUDDD at a rate of 1.4 lbs a week.

Given the my mystery digestive illness* and the fact that I went several days this week barely eating a thing, you may have expected a bigger loss. I actually did see 260 this week but don't want to claim it until it's official. I'll see that number again; I'm not stressed out about it. Mostly, the mystery illness is holding me in stasis because when I do want to eat, I allow myself to eat anything I want and however much. For the moment, I'm fine with that.

For those considering JUDDD here are the upsides and downsides this week:

Downsides


Out of Control Up Days. When I used to read posts by Kristin (JoyJoy) saying that she had no problem with down days--that it was up days that gave her grief--I thought she was a little bit cray-cray! In my earlier days of JUDDDing, down days were like wrestling a bear and up days were a sweet reprieve. I still love up days, don't get me wrong. But they are starting to pose a challenge. Down days are very simple. Avoid eating. If you need to eat, eat only from these very limited choices. Up Days are more complicated. Eat whatever you want, but count, measure, and control. This doesn't sound like too much to ask from a dieter. And really, it's not. But when times of illness and deadline stress come into the picture, control and planning is the first to go. There have been several UUADs this week.

Upsides

On the Other Hand. So, yeah, there have been several UUADs this week. And I still lost at least a pound. And I haven't stopped rotations even though I have entered the phase of a author's life where she chains herself to the computer and lives in utter squalor until the book is finished. I have published nine books, and all nine of those times, I have packed on the pounds in the final stretch. Even with totally out of control up days, this going to break that streak. This plan is so adaptable and flexible to my lifestyle that as long as I accept slower losses, it's becoming totally natural to me. And my body is adjusting to it beautifully. I may still have a huge appetite on up days, but down days, as I'm about to discuss, have totally transformed.

Happy Down Days. Well, it finally happened. Every single one of my down days this week has been easy. Even pleasant, peaceful and productive. I haven't experienced any hunger on down days this week. I could have easily done a complete fast through each and every one of them if I wanted to. I didnt, however, because unlike when the mystery ailment first began, now a tiny bit of food makes it better. So I've been doing lots of small fatty snacks and increasingly confident that a bowl of soup will pretty satisfy me all night.

I LOVE JUDDD! AND I LOVE MY JUDDD BUDDDS!

* There is no progress on the mystery ailment front except that I have been referred to a specialist who does not want to see me until I'm finished taking the course of anti-acid producing drugs that have been prescribed unless the symptoms get worse. At present, I would say the pain in the upper right quadrant of my abdomen has improved. This might be due to the medication. It might also be due to the fact that I've started taking vitamin C, fish oil, and eating tiny bits of fat to stimulate bile production. (All things that should help with flushing gall stones and preventing new ones.) Either I'm a mad genius, or just a hypochondriac kook. But whatever.

Steph--the cure for my UUADs was the DD minimeal plan. Somehow or another my brain stopped getting deprivation signals and my UDs became much more reasonable. I also am eating lowish carbs which helps

Very happy for you, Steph. I'm glad to hear you've had some improvement in the pain, too.

Sorry about the mystery ailment. I don't know what kind of anti-acid thing they have you on but if it is a proton pump inhibitor, remember you need a plan for when you come off of it. That is supposed to be done gradually. If the ailment is acid reflux, consider probiotics and papaya chewables. Two excellent books are Dropping Acid, copyright 2010, and The Acid Reflux Solution copyright 2012.

Oh, how I love your updates! Especially since we started at around the same time and I'm pretty much right there with you in every phase I completely relate about the up days. They used to be so easy I didn't even need to count. Now I have to budget to stay within calories ... but they are still fun.

That former set point of yours is SO in the dust.

Glad you're feeling a bit better, and not gaining with a deadline looming is a major accomplishment!

Malic acid (found in apples) may help soften gallstones.

I take it in a magnesium formula from Source Naturals, called Magnesium Malate.

I also got a pound of it for $4.99 from a company that sells candy & nuts online.
(It's used as a tart flavor in candy-making.)

It's kind of weird. How can I have zero appetite on a down day and then just have an enormous appetite on an up day? This is new. I'm going to have to start counting again. Counting BEFORE I put it in my mouth. To this end, I think I'm going to need to shop for a lot of pre-prepared stuff. I know that I don't have the time or energy right now to figure out the counts in my recipes.

And I'm going to have to exercise SOME control. There was no reason for tonight to turn into an UUAD. My husband brought home burgers from Wendy's. I knew the calorie counts. I budgeted for one of them. Instead I ate two. Then I ate four Samoa girl scout cookies for good measure.

Stress eating, I'm guessing. I suppose if I'm just stress eating every other day that's still better than every day. But really. New phase of JUDDD?

Hiya Steph! Those out of control up days is the reason I went into hiding in September and October. I did wonderfully on JUDDD from about June until August and them BAMMM! I am wondering myself, how is it that I CAN control my eating on the down days but not on the up days? I mean I had UUAD at 4000 plus calories, at least once a week! and then be upset because the weight aint budging...DUH!!!
November I am trying out something new, I have been treating every up day as a down day, just having a couple of protein snacks during the day and saving most of the calories for the evening so I have the wiggle room for the late night munchies. So far so good, had only one blowout at about 2500 calories, but thats better than 4 or 5000 I guess

You know, I think the JUDDD book mentions that after a month or two, people may start having to count UDs. Does anybody else recall this?
Thanks for the update, Steph. All the best with this as you hit heavy deadlines. At least you HAVE a set of tools and guidelines this time.
You mentioned at some point that perfection isn't necessary. Good to know.

The only thing I can figure is that our bodies must be getting used to this pattern. When food is "available" (thinking survival mode here), EAT IT. Because it might not be there tomorrow. ??? I don't know, but the same number of calories is just not as filling as it used to be. It's enough calories to be satisfied if I'm smart about it, but I can now so easily go over, which wasn't really much of a problem earlier.

Crazy Up Days

Steph and Christina~Glad you're both doing well. I've also noticed after a couple months, DD are pretty easy. (I do end up on The Food Network usually!)
Barbie meals have made life bearable on DD's. I also like saying Barbie meals
Up days are the problem! They're like the devil! Taunting me~ sure you can eat cold pizza for breakfast....it's fine that it's 340 calories and you will still be hungry and 1 piece is not enough~
Let's just say I'm weak~

I like the barbie meal idea on Up day, that way I'll save calories...

You all have the greatest ideas!

I've never had a reasonable relationship with food. It's like everyone else learned this stuff when they were kids - how to start eating, what to eat, how often to eat, how and when to stop - but I never got the "care and feeding" manual for my body. Instead, I was just driven to push junky carbs into my mouth as fast as I could, as often as I could, and hunger/satisfaction/choice had nothing to do with it.

I feel like I'm learning for the first time how to approach food sensibly; you know, moderation, variety and all that jazz. I get it wrong quite a bit, but it's getting better the more I practice.

I'm experimenting with a "meal budget" and a "junk budget" now to keep UDs out of the ditch. We'll see how that goes.

I'm in the same place (but haven't figured out the budget yet). I don't know whether it's the 3-month phenomenon, or the fact that I've basically been a compulsive overeater since my teens. But my UDs have been pretty over the top for at least the last two weeks.

On the plus side, my DDs have been good, so I'm trying to feel good about that. But on UDs, I feel this need to "eat it while you can", and if I don't mindfully focus on nutritious foods, I'll eat junk all day long, and especially late at night. Have *never* had a problem getting in all my UD calories, and I'm mostly overshooting them by 300-500 these days.

One thing I do notice: I seem to have a fear of going to bed hungry. I can talk myself into overeating after 9pm very easily if I feel the slightest bit hungry. It's like I don't believe I can make it through a DD if I don't go to bed full as a tick the night before. Then I'll get up the next day and may not have anything but coffee until mid to late afternoon.

I would love to thing this stuff will just settle out naturally as time goes on, but I'm not sure I trust it to without active structure.

Write yourself a little note to remind yourself that you do fine on your DDs. Sometimes something a s simple as that helps us to change our behaviour.

You are doing great, but 300 to 500 hundred calories less on an UD would make a difference.

This could be part mind, part body ... you know a fast is coming, so you want to stock up. It makes sense.

In addition to Kissa's great tip, you could also try working with it by making a plan to eat more lightly in the early part of your up day, and save some calories for a full dinner and a nice bedtime snack? I notice I feel more in control when I have lots of calories left for dinner.

This pattern of eating has been on my mind lately too and I have been succumbing to UUAD on occasion lately. Just a thought...every year this time of year--fall, colder weather, shorter days--I seem to be ravenous. This year especially on the UD. I always wondered about some sort of hibernation mode our bodies may want to go into????

I am trying to tell myself that this is a normal biorhythm for me for this time of year. Just because I have these feelings/thoughts/obsessions of food and hunger doesn't mean I have to act on them if I know it's not good for me long term. Not that I am truly this rational day in and day out. I am trying to drink more hot tea/broths as something comforting during the day and evening to keep hunger thoughts at bay. Not that I am out of the woods by any means. But any port in a storm...

Once again, learning more about myself on this journey every day.

I wouldn't think to eat veggie soup on an up day but maybe it would be nice to have a pot of a delicious up day soup that isn't that high in calories but will still keep the tummy full!

Also, I'm not sure whether to be encouraged or disheartened that so many of you around the same point in the JUDDD journey are experiencing the Up Day Hungries.
