Flutter! So glad you found this WOE and this board!

I haven't used the shakes or bars at all. I have eaten a couple of Atkins bars when I needed something quick on-the-go, but not really as a DD tool. If that sounds good to you, just find some that you like, that fit into your calories. Everyone has different needs and preferences. That's part of the fun of JUDDD, you get to really learn a lot about yourself and how your body reacts to different things.

I read about JUDDD this week, got the book on kindle and am ready to start out tomorrow. I figured I better find some support boards before I really need it.

Quick question, (and I will search here in a sec) is there a sticky for recommended shakes/protein bars, etc, for the 1st 2 weeks? I see the book recommends you do that initially to be certain of calories for DDs. Thanks for any help!
I'm new too (started last week) and I've decided to go the shake route on my DDs, at least starting out. I'm currently experimenting with different brands, but there's lots out there in the 100 calorie range. I found 5-6 just at my local grocery store and I know other people order theirs online. I've actually got a shake experiment thread going, where I trying all the different ones and posting about taste/effectiveness etc. But, it will take a few months for me to get through all the options

Thanks for the welcomes and answers! I bought some atkins shakes and a few protein bars. I'd prefer to not use them, but they are there if need be. Since I've done SB on/off for many years, I'm pretty familiar with low carb snacks, although I admit to never needing to measure or count cals doing that WOE. (I did love that part!) Guess I'll figure it out...starting my first down day tomorrow. eek!

Hi all, I'm new to this whole thing. It sounds great and doable. Do I need to purchase some book to do this diet? I am a 52 yo female, 192 pounds, and 5'5". How do I know how many calories I need for ud and dd? This is confusing to me, but exciting at the same time! Any help would be so appreciated.

Google The Alternate Day Diet and on Dr. johnson's website you can get your calories for UD and DD.

You don't need to purchase the book unless you want the scientific information behind the plan. You DO need to Google Dr. Johnson's Up Day Down Day diet, go to the section outlining how to do the plan, and enter your statistics into the calculator there to figure out your calorie limits.

I entered your stats and got UD 1862 and DD at 20% with little or no exercise (recommended unless you're super active) 372. You can start at 500 calories on DDs and work your way down if you need to.

CindyLuHu! This is a great WOE, and you can be so successful here. Just post often, ask questions, read all you can on this board, and you'll learn everything you need to know. Sounds like Dawn has you all set for your calories. Now you just have to jump in with both feet!

Cindyluhu! The name of the book is: "The Alternate Day Diet" (Carly mentioned googling that) and it's by Dr. James B. Johnson. I got it on Amazon when I started JUDDing and found it motivating and helpful. Especially the chapter that explains SIRT1 gene activation. After reading that, I understood the need for 2 weeks of DD rotations to get sirtuin's flowing and it really spurred me on and still does because I understand the many benefits.

Most people find some things they disagree with, like his take on saturated fats, or the confusion about whether or not you have to count UD calories, but for the most part I think it's worth it to get the book. It's an easy read and it helped me figure out the why's and when's that had me confused.

So glad you are here!!! Read lots and post often!

I am on my first DD, and just realized from doing the calculator that I'm supposed to be at 383 calories. I think I'm going to keep it at 500.

Thank you! It was really strange to eat this morning. I think I'm more scared of eating on up days than not eating on down days. It's the beachy part of me thinking how evil all those carbs are and worrying it'll sabotage any scale losses.

Thanks Dawn. Last month it was a bit quiet and folks seemed to use the Chat thread so,I let it be, but I do like the Newbie thread idea.

Flutter, lots of us find UDs tougher than DDs. Weird?

I think, for me, it's the old way of dieting mentality getting to me. I'm so used to never ever eating anything white while trying to drop weight...and being in a big hurry to do it. I am really going to have to watch myself and remember that it bites me in the toosh at about month 8 when I'm exhausted and mad at the world. Maybe I won't actually have to rebel this time?

Ummm, however, maybe I'll change my mind with the 2nd DD tomorrow and rethink my earlier feelings.

Hi Flutter!! We are JUDDD BUDDD's!!!! We started on the same day. How are you doing on your 2nd DD? So far I have had one cup of coffee with SF hazlenut cream (about 4 T at 15 cals ea...60), and pickled okra and olives. Probably going to eat a little turkey in a minute. I think I am going to like DD's.

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!
I just posted on the newbie nov thread. I'm having an "I'm starving!" 2nd DD. It's all good, though. I know I *could* eat if I wanted to, but I'd really like to keep fasting until late in the day on DDs and then eat a smaller, more normalish dinner with my family. I tend to get really resentful if I can't eat what they eat at dinner time. It's always been part of my eventual back slide to uber pudge.

Sounds like you're doing great today!

Sweetie

When it is cold like it is here today (I am in SC too!) have some tea!!! Or warm broth. I have had my 3rd cup of coffee and 2 cups of tea trying to just keep warm. Cannot wait for tomorrow when they say it shall be warmer. Almonds have too many calories for a DD.

ETA: there are teas made especially to help with hunger. I have one called "Healthy Fasting" and one called "Blueberry Slim Life" by the brand called Yogi. They both claim to help with appetite. I have not needed anyone of these yet, but they are both in my cabinet for when I do!

I know they do. I just am not used to not eating...Never went a whole day without eating in my 48 years, lol. Probably still going to eat some soup when I get home and plan for a better DD on Sat.

P.S. I was at work and have no tea or coffee here, and certainly no broth. I only had almonds in my desk drawer...hence...

I sometimes have the 100 calorie packs of almonds. I know it's too late for that now, but they can be used on a DD as long as you have portion control.

Preparing really does help. You can buy powdered bullion and keep it in your desk as well as packets of miso soup and of course tea bags. If you can't boil water at work most coffee shops will give you or at the very least sell you hot water. In the beginning I would have never made it with out my ziplock baggy of powdered broth. I was mobil 3 days out of the week when I started JUDDDing so I wasn't always able to keep stuff refridgerated, but if you can bring some celery sticks or sliced cucumber (sorry Cindy) to nibble on if you get really hungry that may help. They fill you up for just a few calories.
