Up Day Calories... Do you count them?
I just want to see how many count and how many don't.
If you don't count, do you think it hurts your weight loss?

LoCarbGal 11-06-2012 10:12 PM

I do!

calichris 11-06-2012 10:57 PM

I didn't count up days when I started (except a spot check once in a while). It was great... until my rate of loss slowed by about half two months in. I reluctantly started counting up days, and my loss picked back up to where it was. I don't mind it now, and I think I'm learning some things that will serve me well in the long run. If hoping not to need to count up days in maintenance someday though. :D

witchyanne 11-07-2012 12:56 AM

I do - but mostly only because I know I eat a little *wild* on my up days so far! (Was LC, so am sort of just enjoying things I wouldn't have had on atkins.)

Erika1962 11-07-2012 03:14 AM

I count them too!

KeirasMom 11-07-2012 06:40 AM

I have always counted. I get right up to my UD calories almost every single UD, but I almost never go over.

Carly 11-07-2012 06:51 AM

I don't, but I have to say this with caution. I have never really had an issue with over eating... While awake. I gained the weight from sleepwalk eating and never struggled with eating small, modest portions while awake. I have taken steps to minimize the damage I can do if I sleepwalk eat and I shave 200 cals off my DD in case I do.

Lil Donna 11-07-2012 02:49 PM

Well, I swear I read somewhere that you didn't need to count up day calories. I guess this is the reason that I am just maintaining instead of losing weight:eek:. So from here on out, I guess I need to count calories. I really dread doing that but apparently it must be done.

This is sad for me. I was really hoping that I could go crazy on Up days and be extra careful on down days and the weight would fall off.

UGH! I just hate counting calories. I need to figure out an easy way to do this.

DesertGurl 11-07-2012 03:00 PM

I count. I have fought against any type of plan that "required" me to do so...however, I think I've always been in denial about how much I was eating :p This has been a very very eye-opening experience for me. I am also sort've forced into having to eat intuitively which is something I have strived for for as long as I can remember... I want as much bang-for-my-buck as possible so I'm stingy how I "spend"

I think Dr. J may have said at one point to just eat normally on UDs. He was probably remiss not to say, but you may not have been eating normally so in that case don't exceed the number given on the caculator if you wish to lose weight.
I am quite certain that JUDDD would not have successfully allowed me to lose weight if I continued to eat willy- nilly in my sleep. Considering this was the cause for a huge gain, I may have been able to maintain 200lbs with the use of a DD every other day, but would not have lost if it were not for the extreme measures of emptying the house of everything but a few DD foods.

Since the hurricane we have had some snacky- non perishables and I don't think I have had any serious sleep eating issues, but I'm not going to want it to become a habit that the cabinets are stocked, because for me this would be the equivalent of not counting UDs and hoping to lose!!!!

Another vote for counting! I can easily go over.. unfortunately, I do have an issue with overeating, so counting is the only way for me to counteract that.

Kissa 11-07-2012 03:28 PM

While I was in WLM I counted. In Maintenance I only count occasionally.

As Carly points outs, eating normally is not what made most of us overweight, so I always feel we are not the best placed to know what normal eating is...

You will find that after a couple of weeks of counting you will be able to guess now and then. You don't have much to lose so it is good to know how well you can eat to maintain!

WantToBeSlim 11-08-2012 06:48 AM

I count all my UD calories and I also count all my DD calories.

calichris 11-08-2012 07:58 AM

I know how you feel! I did NOT want to count. at all.

(It's really not so bad with an online tracker though. You can store your most common foods/meals in there, and you can find just about anything in the database.)

You're right that Dr. Johnson does say you can have what you want on up days and don't need to count ... at first. Later in the book he says most people after a couple months need to start counting because they start to compensate. He suggests starting to count when your weight loss slows to less than 1 lb a week. Some of us, maybe especially people who have already been restricting their diets before starting JUDDD, might have this happen earlier?

I was very resistant to calorie counting, but I'm doing it now, it's getting easier, it's working, and I still love JUDDD. Oh the things you can count on up days! :D

mom23kids 11-10-2012 12:37 PM

I'm just starting out and I've decided for the first couple weeks I'm not going to worry so much about counting calories on my UD's. I'm going to focus on getting my DD's figured out first. But, eventually I'll start counting my calories all the time :)

ilahstrait 11-10-2012 03:05 PM

I don't count but I do eat in a 4-8 hr eating window. I tried eating all day and I end up with an UUAAD. I actually tracked my calories twice and was able to eat throughout the day without a gain. I think counting is good for those who need control whether they eat too much or not enough. I am one who eats too much most days so I IF.

Hi - I don't count UDs but I am not a good advertisement for it! My weight loss is slow - about 4 pounds a month! I do LC mostly and I think that helps me to get away with not calorie counting on UDs. In one of the Atkins books it talks about how it is hard to gain weight when your insulin is low I think?

I am wondering at the moment whether I am willing to start counting to have faster losses - I hate counting & I am afraid I will start to feel like I am on a diet!

Good luck
Dee - with a cold!
