The daily bounce doesn't rock my world (anymore)
I've been reading about the pros and cons of daily weighing a lot on the JUDDD boards recently. It terrified me at first, but I have found it a useful tool. This was when I began daily weighing/ recording. I thought I would be unable to tolerate the bounce, but am fairly immune now.

Way too much time on my hands!

Truthfully, I think it's sort of a good way to learn about how your body works. All of us have weight fluctuation, often by quite a few pounds in just a few hours. To be upset or fearful about how our bodies naturally function seems strange, doesn't it.
We are so glad that JUDDD teaches us how to eat, encourages us to develop new habits in eating, in relating to our food and our eating. What we should also be thankful for is the opportunity to allow JUDDD to teach us about what is normal and acceptable weight fluctuation as our days go on, so that we become comfortable about how our bodies fill and release water in a perfect and protective balance in response to what we've eaten or what we've worked through in the past day or so. I'm very keen on knowing and understanding as much as I can about *how I work* and the weight is just one of those things. It no longer causes me a whit of concern either. Yay! ![]()

I agree. I know so much more about how my body works and responds to a lot of things beside just what I eat. I've learned a great deal about how sleep effects me and the bounce as well as TOM, energy levels, current health and moods. Not to mention my level of pain. This is one of the newer things I'm learning. An unexpected bounce often can be connected to higher levels of pain. I love learning and might as well become an expert in... Me!

I'm glad it helped. I used to feel unnerved by the bounce and needed to see weeks and months lined up to help take the power away that I freely gave to it.

Thanks for posting this Carly! I don't weigh daily on JUDDD, but I used to weigh 2x a day when I first started serious weight loss (2003!) on Atkins, and I too found patterns, and the ups/downs didn't bother me.
gotta say, they bother me now though so I'm sticking with after-DD-weighing, which makes me just crazy enough ![]() LOVE your progress! YAY YOU!!! |

p.s. I get the stacking/lose weight even with bounces over time - effect from my tracking software, that puts in a graph of the weigh-ins. So does the ticker site, actually... seeing any trend graph go downward over time is a good thing.

That's really interesting, Carly. Just looking over your progression, the main thing that sticks out is the downward movement of your numbers. Then when you look at smaller slices, you can see the bounces and the "mini-stalls". But you worked it, and had patience, and now look at you!
This is really helpful. I'm still not sure I'm ready to weigh every day, but I know that I'll get there in time. I do think we can learn a lot about our bodies this way. Thanks! |

Carly, thanks for sharing this with us and I love that wonderful downward trend! I do the same with daily weighing and I also write the notes on the side and keep track of TOM, ovulation, and other things of special note like a particularly large meal while eating out or something really different that I ate or anything that isn't like the usual thing every day. I also have my online tracker daily log to compare the weight log to.
I've found this extremely helpful in identifying the whys and hows of my diet and weight loss during WLM and even after reaching goal. It really helped me understand so many things about my body that I never even realized before I started tracking. We're talking stuff that isn't even related to weight loss directly that I was so glad to learn about myself. All of that helped me to get over the fear of the daily bounce.

Great numbers and a good reminder of the general downward trend.
I, too, weigh every single morning. I keep a log so know that even if I don't think anything is moving, the trend is still downward. I may have a day where I am up after a down day or suddenly drop into a zone 2 pounds lower than expected. Because of the log, I know that these anomalies don't matter and I just watch the general trend in weight. My best number is my cholesterol, which had skyrocketed out of control for several months (I donate platelets so get a non-fasting cholesterol test each time). After 7 weeks of JUDDD that's down 45 points and ratios are good. Doc is very pleased and said she's not going to fuss over it if I'm trending so well. ![]()

Thanks so much for this Carly, its so inspiring seeing your daily weigh ins with the ups and downs. This woe is so unlike any other and I now find I dont mind the bounces and am confident now to weigh after an UD whereas to begin with I would only weigh in after a DD!!
On any other woe if I put weight on I would binge as it meantaccording to my brain that as the diet wasnt working I may as well eat.....not now though!! Thanks again!! ![]() Last edited by jacci48; 11-04-2012 at 12:39 PM.. |

Thanks for sharing, Carly. This was very impressive to see. Had a big bounce today and despite how irrational the thought process I began to start doubt myself. This served to remind me that it will all be ok!!

I know that for me it was very freeing to no longer be fearful of or try to control the bounce- it is just part of the JUDDD journey.

I so love this thread. It's been referenced so many times, and for good reason.

Once in awhile I weigh more than once a week, but usually just on Fridays. I might try a week or two of weighing every day after recording everything I eat...just as a science experiment...lol. This is interesting.

Bumping this --- newbies could do well to read this ---as well as needing it for myself.
My bounces are going crazy. I'm older, to be 65 this month, and on a few drugs for heart so maybe that is affecting my weight. I'll keep trying -- only three weeks Sunday so I haven't really given it much time -- but I'm so impatient! Thanks Carly! ![]() |
