Carly, thank you so much for sharing your bounce sheet! I have been struggling with this for a little while and you have motivated me to relax a bit about the bounce and not to be disheartened by it. It's part of JUDDDing and it's all good. As always, you share so much with us!

The bounce can be unnerving in the beginning, but it is just part of Juddd and is nothing to fear.

Seriously!!!! Especially for those (of us ) who weigh DAILY, against sound advice (from Dr. J and others)... we really need to hear this message!

You will most likely (like, 8/10 time) bounce after an UD. Some people even bounce after a DD!

But you will see, if you do track your stats, that you will lose overall.

Keep the faith !!!

This is an amazing post!!

Just what I needed to see. The weight loss is exactly the way it's supposed to happen. I just got a little scared because I'm up a couple of pounds. You showed how that's nothing in the big picture! thank you for posting!

Now I'm inspired to keep a Word document with those kinds of notes you have in yours. Or maybe find a tracker that will show me the progress.

Mine is in a word document. I switched to a different one where it leaves off in January, but I'll eventually merge that one with these.

Crazy...I broke down and bought a 0.0 digital scale, mostly because i can't read the damned analog things anymore...and now i can't stay off it...ugh. It is indeed best to measure high tide and low tide points as a trend, and that's not strictly metaphor, even for post-tidal gals like me.

I'm so glad this great thread keeps getting resurrected. When Carly first posted it, I was about a month into JUDDD and still only weighing weekly, after a DD. I thought I'd never, ever be able to weigh daily, although I admired Carly's relaxed attitude about it. Well, another couple of months and I was doing it too! I, however, still didn't have quite the Zen attitude that she did.

But now, it truly doesn't rock my world anymore. Not to say I don't have mornings that I'd like to kick the darn thing across the room! But it really does provide so much great information about my body and what works for me! Thanks Carly!

Now some times I get up and it doesn't even occur to me to weigh! I got out of the habit of weighing every day a month or 2 into maintenance and I just re-entered WLM, but I have to really try to remember. I'm also usually at a lower weight in the evening on both UD and DD since I think medication I take at night makes me retain a lot of water so I don't always weigh in the morning, but try to check around 6pm or 7pm.

As I am reading this, I am wondering if there is ANY way of eating that does not have a bounce. I don't think the bounce is unique to JUDDD, just because you eat a lot one day and a little the next.

Every way of eating that I have tried has shown that weight is never linear. All ways of eating involve gaining and losing from day to day, right?

Yes, weight loss is never a constant steady loss over a long period but when I have done LC or restricted calories daily the bounce was not as extreme and I frequently lost steadily for at least several days at a time. I think people who follow hGC see daily loss and maybe even with Stillman's, but yes, there is always some bounce especially if one has a lot to lose over a long period of time.

Oh my gosh. I could write a novel on this one. Basically it would say - it's water. Or food matter that hasn't been eliminated. Or glycogen stores, or any one of a myriad of things that is probably not related too much to that brownie that was eaten or that extra mile that was walked. No, you did not gain 5 pounds of muscle because you've been working out at low intensity for a week. Did you eat away from home? Was it salty even if it didn't taste salty? Did you drink a ton of water? Did you not drink enough water? Did you have a glass of wine? Do you usually have a glass of wine and last night you didn't?

I just like to blame it on hormones and call it a day.

This is all true, at least in my experience. On a steady calorie deficit, my bounce is minimal. With JUDDD, sometimes there's just a little bounce, sometimes it's huge, but most often, it's a steady 1-2 pounds difference between the UD/DD. The ball bouncing down the stairway is appropriate for most of us.

Wow Carly, you look amazing. Thank you soo much for sharing your photo, and numbers! Its really inspiring. This is my third try on Juddd! Hopefully 3 times a charm. My weakness is not being able to eat 500 cal and going over board on up days. This time I have a plan and even worked out a menu. Would you mind if I asked how much your initial calories were for up/down days?

I am starting at 500/1800, 5'2 167. After the 2 week induction I plan to go to 700/1800 that more dooable for me. Thanks again for sharing!!!

Here's my down day menu in case others are interested

nectarine 80
popcorn 100
cottage cheese with fruit spread 100
4 leafs romaine, 1/2 roma tomato. 1 persian cucumber, with 2 oz of ham and dsg = 175
14 grapes =50

or alternatives are yogurt 80 cal or 11 chips with greek yogurt for 100, or rice cake with 2 tsp pb 100 cal substitue as needed for variety.

My first set of numbers were 1900/380. Now they are 1550/312. I never had to make a conscious effort to lower my UDs. It just happened with the amazing appetite suppression I got from JUDDD. I didn't do the induction of 500 for the first 2 weeks because I had no idea you could so just started with 380 which was my 20% number at 189lb and 5'2"

Thanks Carly, I was just reading some of your old posts. I hope I will be able to still lose with a higher dd then you! Do you think based on others experience it's possible? Or what do you recommend? I don't mind the slower wt loss just want to be able to keep committed to it.
