Holiday Recovery Strategies

I wonder if it'd be useful to create a list of useful post- holiday/lapse strategies, ie to get back on the Juddd horse.

Here's why I want the list.
During my early breaks, I juddded while away. It worked, but I want to be able to fully enjoy the food on holidays when it looks delicious and unusual.

On later holidays/trips, I fell off JUDDD over the course of the holiday, and jumped right back into a DD when I returned home. This is still my favorite strategy.

BUT. This time, I was away for a couple of weeks and I couldn't do a good DD when I got home. I have no idea why (too whipped up on processed carbs? Two weeks of full calories every day?) Three days running, I blew over my DD calories when I got home and DID NOT like the way I felt about myself.

So I regrouped and figured I had to lower the horse, if you know what I mean. I had to make starting back easier.

These worked for me:
1. A few days of low carb, high fat eating. This reduces my hunger and my cravings. I did this just before starting JUDDD the first time.
2. A few days of compressing my eating window a bit, in preparation for DDs
3. I upped my DDs from 350 (which had been EASY before) to 7-800, and am working my way back down.
4. I read everything I could fing here on the subject.

So I'm back to rotations, and happy. And only about four pounds over my favorite weight. (Felt like 340 pounds over when I got home.)

I wonder if you beautiful people would like to add what's worked best for you. I figure it'll help motivate all of us when we need it.

I love being here. Thanks.

That's exactly the same kind of thing I did to get back in the swing of things, from my vacation in July and most recently. I had to get rid of the cravings first, and going high fat, low carb eating to fullness and even slightly above on my first day back, calling it an UP day whether it was or not. And then raised the DD calories by a bit, and worked my way back down. Doing it again now. This last time I didn't go *away* but I had a horrible high stress few weeks and went almost completely off plan. Gained 3 pounds but thank God only 3. Did a 650kcal DD yesterday after doing a few days low carb to get cravings under control.

I'd like to get this latest 3 pounds gone and then do another 2 at least and hold steady for awhile.

Very curious as to what people will give as tips. I suspect that when you're away from JUDDD for too long, it's like starting all over again. And since I remember--with vivid clarity--just how horrible my first DDs were, I think that might give me serious motivation not to stray for so long.

But if I do stray, I think it helps to:
  • Plan out your DD Menu _and_ your UD menu so you have something to look forward to
  • Work your way down the caloric ladder. Don't freak out if you don't hit your DD target the first try

My re-start wasn't too bad. It was actually calming. But neither time was I "gone" more than a couple weeks or so.

I JUDDD.
Five pounds down in six days after returning from holidays, and really only one decent DD in that time. I'm in absolute awe.

Thanks for sharing such an encouraging update! I am hoping to reach my goal of 135 by Dec. 1st, and will need all the help I can get to maintain (rather than gain my usual 7 lbs.) through all the holidays that month.

JUDDD magic works for me as well as it has for you.

I had no trouble jumping back to my low DDs, but I feel the weight is slow to let go.
9/26 first day back weighed 154.5-DD
9/27 UD 152.7
9/28 DD 151.9

I want to be back at 148.3 like yesterday
I can't believe I gained so much so quickly, but sleep walk eating was definitely involved in this equation. I will not bring snack food to keep in the room in the future since I consumed it totally asleep and that's just a waste. I have nothing that could cause damage a home if eaten while asleep... FF plain Greek yogurt won't do anywhere close to the damage our snacks caused

Thanks Dawn and Kristen. Yesterday's DD yeilded NO loss... So much for 3 rotations and weight will be off. I have to do a MD today which I hate to do, but I have a wedding tonight, but don't plan to eat much and a family gathering tomorrow where I plan to eat.

Carly, I've had holiday gains that took weeks to leave behind. No idea why it's different this time. This is SO not a linear process, which is sometimes fantastic and sometimes a drag. All the best with the next week or two.

Yes... I'm feeling a little better about it and I know it will just take what it takes. TOM is also a week or more overdue so that's not helping 1 bit.

I've done several of these since April, b/c unless I have a kitchen in my room, my ability to DD is pretty bad. And those are work trips. My upcoming 2 week vacation? at an all-inclusive? Forget it-- I'm going to go face first into the guac

So, coming back-- first of all, I don't stress and freak out. I now know that JUDDD totally works, and much faster than trying to get back on track with straight LC.

2) my first 2 or even 3 DDs, I go for higher cals... maybe even a UD/MD/UD/DD type of thing.
Lower pressure, lower expectations, get back in the habit.

3) ween off the high carbs, and on the UD, try to stay relatively low carb-- as you said, nip those cravings in the bud.

4) just do it One of the DDs, mentally say, I'm all in. Plan a great DD with yummy stuff, and set yourself up for success.

(my goodness-- someone link me back to my panicked posts from late April/May... tell that chick that THIS chick is waiting for her 6 months down the line...)

I haven't been on holiday, but I stopped doing JUDDD for several months and ate whatever I wanted. Now that the main source of stress in my life is gone (quit a job I hated), I'm ready to get back on the wagon.

I did high fat, strict LC for a week before jumping back into JUDDD. This made the transition easier for me, both mentally and physically. I'm still avoiding sugar but I'm eating bread and more fruit now.

Finally! A few minutes to enjoy this thread!

My strategy:

Before

When I know a holiday/vacation/extended food-fest is coming, I concentrate on no-cheat, no MD, very straight rotations at least a week or two before the event/experience/orgy. This ensures I go into the fight with the maximum load of JUDDD Magic.

During

I have never been much of a breakfast eater. DD or UD, a few cups of coffee with a teaspoon of hwc is usually enough to prevent hunger for hours. So, unless breakfast is a really special part of the event, I drink my coffee/hwc and avoid solid food. If lunch is special, I enjoy it. Otherwise I have my usual small salad (and more coffee).

Eating normally (my version of JUDDD normal) reinforces the magic.

AND, during the event, if I have an opportunity to have a DD - I take it. House guests left on Tuesday, next group arrives on Thursday...Wednesday is DD.

After

I think because I keep reinforcing the magic whenever I can - I have never had a problem moving back into the rotations (with a sigh of relief).

And, when it comes to holidays/vacations/special events..something involving good food and good friends seems to happen to me every month or two...my next career may just be 'partying fool'.

I did not "lose" weight. I evicted it. It is gone and it ain't coming back!

JUDDD cares about calories. JUDDD does not care what you eat. Your body probably does.

I thought the weight would come off a bit quicker, but TOM wrecked havoc so the 3 rotations probably would have done it w/o that. I do JUDDD.

It's a tough job, but...

In the book, Dr J says it takes, on average, 14 days for sirtuin saturation to return to normal levels (to burn off the magic, so to speak). I have not experimented in depth, but suspect that is about my average. So, I figure anything I do to reinforce the magic during an event gets me back in the grove faster when the party hats are lying crushed in the waste basket and the dancing shoes are back in their boxes.

As Carly points out, TOM can shake but not break this theory.

Well, TOM, for me is it's own animal. I think in the beginning it took a bit more that 14 days for the really good SIRT1 power, but once I was juiced up I was good to go. I've only vacationed 5 or 6 days at a time so it hasn't been difficult for me to jump back into rotations and still felt that I had good appitite suppression.
