first bullet proof coffee
I had never even heard of this until this board.
at first, I was a bit leery, although I do like butter. So got a nice cup of hazelnut coffee, a tsp splenda, and a tbsp. butter, whizzed up in the blender on the go for my DD "lunch". it is pretty yummy ![]() I hope it helps me save more of my cals for later, cuz the hungries really set in most DDs by late afternoon... and can be tough. thanks guys... learning a lot here! |

Hey Toora. I'm fascinated by the whole bullet proof coffee thing, and glad to hear what you think. I trust all you JUDDD BUDDDS that swear by it, and I even have the CO now (butter is always in my fridge!). I don't know what's stopping me from making it!?!?
![]() I can't have it today, it's a DD and all my calories are "spoken for" for the planned day. Maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow on my UD. I really hope I love it! |

So - this is the first I am hearing of this, since I have been out of the loop for a while...can someone point me to a thread that discusses the bullet proof coffee in greater detail?

Marianne, I don't know the thread.
My full-on recipe is 1 T butter, 1 T coconut oil, in the blender with a big cup of coffee. Smooth, creamy, gorgeous, unless the very thought of it makes you gag. ![]() . Very sustaining for me. I often use smaller amounts on DDs. Toora, glad you're enjoying it. ![]() |

Marianne, do an internet search on "bullet proof coffee". They're everywhere! They're everywhere!
I haven't tried it yet. Like LCGal my calories are already spoken for (or, on UD I keep forgetting to try it) |

I want to try it too! I'll have to see where I can get my hands on some coconut oil. Oh, and I suppose I'd better get some unsalted butter too--unless there's a good "salted caramel" bulletproof coffee recipe out there.

My first time trying coconut oil today, and I just melted 1 TBS. of it in a hot cup of green tea. Gotta say it wasn't too greasy & it was actually pretty tasty & very filling.
I sure hope it agrees with my tummy, because I'd at least like to be able to have it on my UDs. I don't think I'd like it in my sacred morning cup of coffee though. ![]() |

Kiley, hot. It gets a bit scummy on the surface as it cools.
And SlimNana, ooh, gross, yeah, if you just melt it in coffee. It's the whipped thing that makes it like a latte. Let us know if you discover any new ways. I'd love to hear. ![]() |

Very interesting!
I am on an UD today, so may try one as a mid-day snack. Am not sure I am quite ready to use that many calories on a DD - but who knows....will see where it takes me. |

So, I tried it...
I didn't care for it, but I used coffee that isn't my favorite so maybe I'll try again some other UD, but I like coffee just fine with half and half and already feel that this is decadant enough. I don't drink coffee on DDs anymore, because I only really like it with half and half and don't like to waste the calories. |

well so far, I would say it was a success re good bang for my buck satiety-wise. staved off hunger for about 3-4 hrs... pretty good for 102 cals.
I don't know if I want to take it up a notch with CO... which I do not even own... haven't gotten on that (yet?). But just the butter and coffee and splenda frothed up was yummy, not greasy... and I am hoping for a bit of a mini fat-fast effect on my DDs. we shall see! don't think I will do it on an UD, as I would rather spend my cals on other foods, and don't really want/need to feel full/not hungry on an UD. |

I do not know if any of these things are true. I can only speak for myself that coffee blended with 1 tsp of butter and 1 tsp of coconut oil (which is a much more modest recipe than the original, btw) will keep me going for a surprisingly long time. Much longer than coffee with cream--and I have no explanation for that. In fact, on my last DD, an 80 calorie Bulletproof coffee is all I had. All day. Today is another DD and I'm going out to dinner with my family (it's obligatory), so I used Bulletproof coffee to see me through the day so I'll have at least 400 calories left over to eat a salad. The original recipe for Bulletproof coffee calls for something ridiculous like 4 T butter and 4 T coconut oil and I JUST BET that's delicious as all hell. I can't fathom spending that many calories on coffee, however. So I haven't dared try it. Last edited by stephdray; 09-27-2012 at 02:50 PM.. |

Okay - I'm sufficiently intrigued. Today is my DD and all my cals are spoken for as well but on Saturday I am most definitely going to try this with Steph's 1 teaspoon measures. Using whole tablespoon measures would cost me 230 calories. Just can't bring myself to use that many calories on a DD.

I'll give it another try with some better quality coffee, but since my DD limit is 340 and I try to leave 100 calories for sleep eating wiggle room I could not risk having only 100 or so calories to chew
Some times I need a little extra with my bedtime snack.Mine didn't come out very creamy or latte-ish. I only used about 4oz of coffee so only used a little butter and a little CO. Maybe that was why it wasn't that good as well ![]() I'll report back when I try it again- everyone seems to love it!

A few months ago I wanted to jump on the coconut oil bandwagon, but couldn't afford it. A can or two of coconut milk is much less of an investment! It has a few carbs, but only 5-6g per cup. If you refrigerate the can, then open it, the fattier stuff will have floated to the top--"coconut cream". It's probably a little lower in carbs. If you're not crazy about the coffee, you can use up the rest of the can in smoothies, soups, curries, rice, etc. Or...piña coladas!!! ![]() ----------------------- I mentioned this in the other bpc thread, but I experimented several times with butter tea, coffee & cream, and other "just fat" breakfasts; by testing my blood sugar, I determined that fat on its own does NOT seem to signal my body that I've eaten. In my case that's not good...I need to eat something ASAP after waking to counter "dawn phenomenon" (high fasting blood sugar).

Now I'm intrigued. I've got morning activities Fri-Sun and I fast on Mondays so I'll have to wait until Tuesday to try it. But if having this doesn't actually break my fast I *could* have it on Monday. Hmmmm.

Just had my first cup, Steph style. Loved the taste and texture even with just a tsp of b & co. Did use a blender. Hope it holds off the hunger for a long time.

:The author of the diabetes plan I'm on, Diane Kress, says that 5g or less of carb will not raise blood sugar enough to "wake up" the pancreas. So, 1 or 2 carb in the bpc might be okay. But by all means, stick to the original recipe if you don't want to risk it. Butter & oil have zero carbs. There are 7g carb in 1 cup (8oz/16 tbsp) of HWC; there are 6g in the same amount of coconut milk --and I don't think most people need a full cup for their coffee! ![]() Coconut cream will have even fewer carbs. (Not trying to be argumentative, Steph, just trying to explain my logic! And my thriftiness...for a while I couldn't afford the CO I wanted [Nutiva 54oz, $25-30] so I made do with $1.39 cans of coconut milk for a while. ETA: And if someone isn't sure they're going to like the flavor of coconut in their coffee/food, getting rid of one can of milk is easier than using up a 12-16oz jar of oil.
