I tried it again yesterday with my nice pumpkin spice coffee. I used a tsp of butter and a tsp of coconut oil with about 6oz of coffee and a drop or 2 of ez-sweetz in my Ninja. It was better than the first time, but I just didn't love it. I love that all you ladies love it and will continue to watch your progress with it! I only drank part of it, but I did feel a burst of energy for the next hour or so. I also had some trouble sleeping, so I will keep it mind when energy is needed, but must drink it earlier in the day.

Now that is interesting. I'm trying to figure out what all the sleep disturbances on this board are about. Part of me thinks it's JUDDD but part of me wonders if it's the damned coffee. On the other hand, I had some excellent sleep this weekend and lots of coffee....

Most nights I sleep great. 8 hours. The only thing that messes that up for me is if I've had a LOT of sugar or coffee later than I should.

I do like the slight hit of caffeine I get from green tea, both in terms of energy/alertness but no/few jitters (and talkativeness) AND that it seems to help with appetite suppresssion. In my tea experiments (green, white, oolong, herbal) so far, green has been the best. I might try some black tea or a mixed black/green tomorrow on my DD to see how well I do, in the above caffeine related areas PLUS appetite suppression. My trade-off with sleep is that I take some melatonin most nights, otherwise I wind up reading till 2 or 3am ![]()

I'm trying it
I've got a black tea that is cocoa nibs and chili (though I don't taste the chili...) and I've added 1 tsp (actually measured) of unsalted butter and 1tsp of coconut oil. Used the actual blender (funny you posted that it splattered with the immersion blender Adi, b/c I was thinking of using that and then imagined the same scenario). It's 10:40am here, so I'll report on how long I can go on just bulletproof black tea (and likely water, later) toward the end of the day. It does have a lovely white foam on top! S. p.s. I just put it in my ********* for the day, and funny enough, my numbers come up to 74cals for the mug-- which is exactly what a large egg would come to. So I'm comparing it against that. Hi DD-- I'm no expert, but having read a few threads on this, here's my answers:
1) yes, will work with anything caffeine and hot. 2) you could add a touch of HWC, but the idea is to go for pure fat and caffeine, though HWC doesn't add much carb, it has a bit. YMMV. The idea is to not "break the fast" and give you some energy as well as a sense of satiety and appetite suppression (caffeine can do the first and the last for some people, the fat does the satiety). The full fat version calls for a T of both fats, whereas some people have had DD success with 1 tsp of each. Hope I summed it up well enough--I think the caffeine is kicking in, b/c I'm typing super fast! LOL |

Update-- it's about 2pm here--
hunger: I do feel hungry, but I don't feel compelled to do anything about it other than drink more water. Alertness: the caffeine is working I'm doing work-work stuff, and occasionally getting up (work at home) and folding laundry, etc.So, for hunger-- like having a HB egg, thus far. For energy, same as any other black tea would've been for me. I am counting the calories from this, but some people don't? |

Me too Steph-- especially fat/protein stuff (i.e. sometimes I don't count, like, lettuce-- but that's an entirely different thread).
4pm update. I had some water, and hunger is coming/going, but not killing me. Conclusion-- (and YMMV of course). I think having a bulletproof high caffeine tea did work for me today. I got a bunch of stuff done, and was maybe *slightly* better off than if I had spent the same calories on a HB egg, in that I got the caffeine, and same level of satiety. On the other hand, I could have the tea w/out the fats, and then have the egg too ![]() So, that's my experiment. I was curious, and now I'm not any more S. |

I've been trying bulletproof coffee days for the past few DD's.
Good side: * I feel a lot warmer. (This is important with the weather the way it is now here!) * I think it's probably cheaper. It certainly requires little thought. * I feel more energetic. Bad side: * I feel hungry and one day I caved and ate some eggs too. Anyway I've decided to keep trying it, however I don't feel that 500 calories is enough for me to be not-miserable on so I'm increasing the allowance to 4 cups of it (that's about 880 calories I think) and also making a big flask of the coconut oil/butter base and pouring small amounts of it into hot beverages throughout the day (instead of at individual sittings) and that seems to help as well. (Note: By 'bullet proof coffee' I mean this in a very general sense because I can't drink normal coffee, there is one type of instant coffee for some reason that I can drink, and also mixing it with cocoa powder, tea, chicory-based coffee substitute, spicy water etc) Last edited by Avicenna; 10-10-2012 at 03:16 AM.. |

I'll try it again but I tried it yesterday afternoon before taking my daughter to cheerleading and it made me really sick. It tasted fine but afterward I had bad nausea and stomach cramps. I think I'll save this for an UD. Yesterday was a DD and something about drinking that having a relatively empty stomach just didn't sit well. I like the theory though and it did taste good which I was surprised about. I just did about 8oz of fresh brewed Starbucks Espresso blend, a pat of salted butter and a teaspoon of EVCO with some sugar free caramel syrup.

I tried it again this morning and it tasted much better and didn't make me sick.
But it's only 9:30 and I'm getting tummy grumbles. So I don't know if it did anything for me today as far as helping DD hunger. I'm only going into my third week and I find DD hunger uncomfortable still, especially at normal meal times. ETA, my putting my coffee in the blender then adding coconut oil and butter garnered some really interesting looks from the hubby! |

I sometimes think of the grumbling like when you get a stomach ache/discomfort? Ie., I'm not hungry, I'm sorta sick, so why would I eat, ick...

I had one today at 11 (nothing before that). Around 4 I started thinking I might be hungry. But not HUNGRY! LOL Dh works nights and has a really hard time on DDs. He tried the BPC last night and said it did seem to energize him better than straight coffee (which he drinks a lot of). It would be great if it helps him.
Has anyone made this and kept it hot in a thermos or insulated cup? Wondering if it will separate. I'd like to try taking it with me on mornings when I can't eat but would love something hot to warm me up. |

I think that even hot, in a thermos, it would separate, but... in a thermos, you can give it a good SHAKE and since it stays really hot, I think that would help a lot... more than just letting it sit in a mug and get cool while you drink it.

I started an "experiment" thread, but should've posted here! This is my 3rd down day trying bulletproof coffee in the morning, but this is the first time I used coconut oil (1 tsp butter, 1 tsp CO). I don't know if it's the CO or the fact that it's my third day or whether there is no connection at all, but it was a really good DD, with no hunger at all and feeling very alert all day. Didn't eat until 4:30. I might make this a habit.

Yes, it separates and that is what I don't like about it.
Fat floats on water no matter what. When I was making BPC, I was only consuming about half because after that the coffee alone didn't even taste good. |

Please be careful about shaking hot liquid in a thermos! If I remember my high school science correctly...the agitation can cause the air to expand, and when you open the thermos, some hot liquid might shoot out with the air!
------------------------------------ I wonder if it would be okay to just EAT a "fat bomb" along with the coffee, instead of putting fat into it and hassling with trying to emulsify them? I recently made a really simple mix of (no-sugar) peanut butter, coconut oil, and ghee (browned, strained butter). Peanuts do have carbs & protein, but if the final amount of PB per serving was less than 1/2 oz, it might sneak under the pancreas radar. (Example: make with equal amounts of PB, CO, and butter; divide into 1 tbsp servings; total pb=1tsp, about 1g carb + 1g protein). I bet macadamia butter would be an even better fat ratio! I've been using this instead of peanut butter because I never get around to eating coconut oil! I keep it at room temp, and it's easier to spread than CO alone--it's getting chilly here! I also poured some into silicone muffin molds & my son has been chowing down on them. They look like "blonde" Reese's cups!

Well, for me, adding the butter and CO to the coffee makes it drinkable. Otherwise, I don't drink black coffee. I have no problems eating CO straight as long as it's cold (I keep 1T portions in the freezer). I could eat it all day long. I even crave it sometimes. Weird, I know. I don't think I could do that with butter, but I've never tried.

That sounds yummy.....but I'm afraid to try it. If the whole purpose of BPC is to keep you in fat burning mode I worry adding anything else will throw that off.
Yesterday was odd. I got my regular boost of energy from the coffee (drank at 11). Did a bunch of running around and didn't get to eat dinner until 7 p.m. Ate roast chicken and broccoli & cauliflower with a sprinkling of parmesan. My energy level stayed up enough that I could tackle 2 projects I hadn't gotten done during the day. (Just realized I had another tablespoon of CO with dinner so I'd have enough fat to take my supplements with...maybe that did it.) Went to bed just after midnight, slept great, and woke shortly before 8 and I'm full of energy and raring to go! Not thinking about food, yet, and will have a BPC between 9-10. |

I can eat straight butter
Just saying, if it's salted, I can cut chunks off and just eat it. YMMV, but it's pretty yummy ![]() I couldn't limit myself to 1tsp though. (I can't believe I just admitted eating butter, in public )I had a BPT (tea) this morning, kept me going till 3pm-- including some yard work! I tried whizzing it in the immersion/handheld blender-- did about 1/2 the amount, then poured it back into the remaining (unwhizzed) tea, b/c I didn't want too much in the whizzer and get it all over. so that worked out just fine. But I get a nicer foam if I use my actual blender... but the hand blender worked just fine, just not as foamy. |
