Starting soon-question!

I am been a frequenter of this message board for many years and have done Atkin's on and off for many years. Off more than on, considering I now weigh over 300 lbs! Anyway, I am very interested in starting the JUDDD diet, mostly because it's something I haven't tried before. A couple of months ago I tried the HCG diet through a clinic and was restricted to a 500 calorie per day diet. The HCG was supposed to make me not feel hungry, but it never happened. I ended up quitting because I was starving and having trouble completing even simple tasks. I think I lasted five days. So, my question is....if I restrict my calories to 500 or 600 on my down days, won't I have the same problems I had on the HCG diet? Does the hunger get better as you go along? I've always had a huge appetite, probably my biggest downfall. Also, it seems that most of you are following a lowcarb plan along with this one. Is this necessary for weight loss? It's hard for me to imagine eating only 500 calories every other day and then having to restrict carbs too. I guess I just want some input on what has worked for everyone and how hard this diet is, especially in the beginning. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

The hunger does get better, usually within a few DDs. Once you realize you get to eat tomorrow, the DDs don't feel nearly as hard as knowing that you only have 500 calories EVERY day.

There are many of us here who do NOT restrict carbs. When I started JUDDD in December, it was because I wanted to incorporate carbs, and boy have I. I've lost almost 80 pounds since then, just following my calories. I keep down days low, and up days I eat close to my UD calories.

I have found that JUDDD is amazing for appetite supression. I was low carb when I started, but no longer count carbs at all- just calories. I don't always choose to have a bun with a hotdog or burger, but I won't deny myself occasional cake or ice cream. I now eat pasta at times as well as crackers and fruit. I enjoy yogurt and tons of other things that were off limits on LC. Nothing is off limits on JUDDD. Just respect your calories- it's awesome!
I found it helpful to read Dr. Johnson's book "The Alternate Day Diet".

I'm pretty new to JUDDD and I'm soooooo glad I found it, all thanks to this forum. I find the down days pretty easy as long as I sip ice water all day. I don't eat until 6 or later on down days (my little Fast 5 twist) and so I can actually feel like I'm eating pretty normally in the evenings. I was never a big breakfast fan so that probably helps. I have always tended to overeat and thought my up days would be pig out city but really, so far they've been fine. I haven't been counting up day calories yet and I'm losing steadily but I know I should start.

I'm a long time vegetarian so I started JUDDD low carb vegetarian but found the low carb part too limiting for me, though I did like how I felt emotionally with low carb. I'm doing sort of a moderate carb thing now but will probably back off the carbs when/if the weight loss stalls.

There's a lot of information on JUDDD here and on Dr J's site and that got me started but I ordered the book anyway and have found it to be helpful in filling in little gaps of info I'd missed. I don't post a lot but I do read a lot here and it's quite motivating and helps me realize I'm not the only one. Plus the food porn and DD idea threads are fabulously helpful when you just can't think of what you could possibly eat for under 500 calories.

Good luck!

I'm just starting out too, we can figure it out together! I think the DD calories just sound intimidating, but I bet after awhile, once we're in a routine, it will just become second nature. We can totally do this!!!

Hi Aprilmarie
I've only been JUDDING since the beginning of the month but I'm finding it pretty easy and the weight is steadily dropping. I don't have problems with carbs so I certainly don't restrict them on UDs. I have muesli for breakfast and I love fresh bread. However, I do tend to avoid starchy stuff on DDs and fill up with low-cal veggies.

If you trawl around the forum a bit, you'll learn why constant severe calorie restriction causes problems and how they are avoided with JUDDD. Have a look at the thread September Newbies - post here. Also, there's lots of background info in the sticky threads. It really helps if you understand the why as well as the how.

There's tons of support and advice here. There are some great DD recipies and ideas. I wish you an enjoyable journey.
