"Negative" Calorie Foods? Opinions?

Just wondering if anyone follows the concept behind "negative calorie foods" while on JUDDD?

I think celery is most known for this, as it supposedly takes more calories for the body to digest it than the celery actually gives you by itself. (In other words, you may consume 20 calories from a couple stalks of celelry, but your body actually burns more than 20 calories while going through the process of trying to digest these 20-calories-worth of celery.) Supposedly this is true of some other foods - like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, onions, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, oranges, grapefruit, etc... fruits and vegetables for the most part (though not all of them).

It got me thinking that perhaps when some of us struggle with the scale, it would be more beneficial to have 100 calories worth of these fruits and veggies instead of 100 calories worth of meat or bread, at least on our DDs. Granted, many of us opt to do JUDDD to avoid worrying about what types of calories we're eating... but I just thought I'd put this out there as a thought and see if anyone has had more success they can document by eating the "negative" calorie foods... or even if some people have been able to eat more calories than before because so many of the food calories being consumed are in this "negative" calorie category.

Hmmm, I have never really thought about this, but I suppose it makes sense.

I am going to do a little hunt on the net in relation to negative cals.

Seems reasonable as I read a bit.

Interestingly, one site mentioned adding a little lemon juice to your water to alkalise your body and speed up metabolism. Another mentioned adding natural salt eg Himalayan Salt, as it is a negative calorie food and something we all need.

Both of these subjects have been brought up by Pirate Jenny in other threads. I respect her knowledge.

I'm torn about this, but tend to count the celery and Lettus as calories taken in since these are mainstays for me on DDs. I'd love to hear what you all think, though.

It would be interesting to try and make a raw smoothie with the "negative calorie" veggies & fruits. I think I will!

Thank you for suggesting this!

Although, would it change the digestion factor if it was in a drink rather than in raw form? Maybe this is not a good idea???

Precisely Sunday, lol. The fibre is crucial.

I wish I liked celery.

Maybe it'll grow on me if I start out slowly....like eating it with buffalo wings and bleu cheese dip.

Yep. When I was doing WW they stressed the importance of eating and not drinking your calories. When you blend or juice foods it changes the amount of work your digestive system has to do. Even if you just blend fruits and veggies and leave the fiber in, it still takes less calories or energy for your digestive system to process.

Dr. Dukan talks about the negative calorie effect of foods. He calls it SDA or Specific Dynamic Action.

He gives percentages for different food groups. I don't remember all of them, but I do remember lean protein and fat free dairy being the highest at 30%.

So, if you eat 100 calories of lean protein, it takes so much effort for your body to digest it that 30 calories are burned in the process. You only "get" 70 calories per 100.

Later on in his book, though, when he talks about the Weight Rebound Effect he elaborates on how your body processes calories when you have lost a significant amount of weight.

At some point when your body thinks enough stored fat has been "plundered" it will start figuring out ways to use up every single calorie of all the foods you eat.

That is one of the reasons weight loss slows or stalls after someone has been dieting for a while.

I'm pretty sure I've gotten to that point. At some point after we maintain our loss for a while, we can start the loss again by moving more or finding ways of eating that speed up metabolism.

As I'm JUDDing along, I'm hoping my metabolism will get back on the move again.

Of course, I could add in more exercise. I know I need to. Just not as motivated as I should be.

I've been doing Callanetics and I swear my clothes feel looser. However, every time I've done it so far I get so darned sore I have to wait almost a week to do it again.

YamYam,
I could barely get into my car for about a week not too long ago, because my gluteus maximus was so sore that it felt like I had taken a beating!

That tells me that Callanetics must be working.
