other studies have shown that animals closer to man than mice don't get this benefit though. there was a prominent article/study with that result online just in the last few days, but I don't have the citation handy, sorry. it's possible there is some benefit of course. this is not proof against it. just that all of us have learned to be VERY skeptical of mouse studies.

Just as Ravenrose says there was a report that it didnt have the same effect on monkeys. So, who knows?

I really love JUDDD and want the mouse study to be right. Howver, at the end of the day we can only do our best. I know I feel great and have lost weight and kept it off with ease but doing this.

So I choose to believe in the SIRT 1 effect.

My understanding about this recent study is that it didn't support the theory that fasting lengthens life. However, it significantly delayed the onset of diseases that lead to a poor quality of life.

I'm eating this way because it's enjoyable and it's keeping my weight off almost effortlessly. I don't care how "long" I live, just how "healthy" I live for as long as I'm here. Besides, for me, longevity may already be in my genes. My grandparents lived to be 93, my Great-Grandmother 101, my Great-Aunt 96, etc. My Dad is going strong at 80.

Thanks for the thread and the link to the study, locarbinca!

It took a while for me to finally find an article on the newer study about monkeys mentioned here, searching through all the other recent good news, good news, good news about SIRTs in various 2012 articles.

So I appreciate hearing your thoughts on it here. Thanks to Laurie for this summary.

Isn't this just a question of how something is stated? If what CAN be proven is that the onset of these diseases is significantly delayed, then in the absence of those diseases the subjects will be living with fewer potential causes of death. That is virtually the definition of healthy, long life.

I agree with Dr. Mark Mattson's take on this study, that we already knew that calorie restriction helps the brain and makes people healthier. (emphasis mine)

The fact that many of those diseases that ARE significantly delayed by calorie restriction are related to cognitive ability and brain health is SUCH AN IMPORTANT POINT when applied to humans. Humans use our mental capacities to take care of ourselves in vastly more diverse ways than any other mammal. So when we find ways to keep our cognitive ability vibrant into old age, all of our well-being will be impacted positively, including lifespan.
