Thank you Kissa & Cici for the welcome… Cici, I appreciate your explanation; makes sense to me. I’ll be doing JUDDD in conjunction with Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Eat to Live program.

I'm a Joel Fuhrman fan. My son gets great results and frequently astounds his work colleagues as he chomps his way through a whole romaine with his homemade bean pate for lunch. (They had to admit it was tasty though!)
I use a lot of Fuhrman's principles but am by no means strictly vegan. Have a look for my peanut sauce for cabbage in the sticky DD recipe section.

The great thing about JUDDD is that you can incorporate a menu to suit yourself, not some rigid list of dos and don'ts. Hence we can have enthusiastic carnivores and strict vegans happily JUDDDing together and supporting each other.

Hi everyone! My Up day calories are 1746 and my down day calories are 349. If I work out lightly they are 2001/400. If I decided to fast on my down day, would I need to up my calories on my up day?

Hitting a rough spot today. Today is supposed to be a transition day to reset my rotation to accomodate 2 birthday celebrations. Have found myself grazing in the high fat section of the fridge and cupboard already. Very scary. Had the day planned but threw the plan out after I added feta to my cottage cheese which was shortly after some cashews which was 5 hours after a sane breakfast. The brain is in that place that I thought was gone. So far, the quantities have been limited so I am only at about 600 calories. Hopefully this urge will calm down before before this turns into an extra UD. Tomorrow is BD#1.

Most of us use the no exercise option, even if we exercise and do fairly well. If you're training for a marathon or something, you might have to increase your calories. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Regarding fasting on DDs, that's actually preferable according to Dr. J., but he understood many of us wouldn't be able to do that, so that's why we're allowed a small amount of DD calories. You would not add anything you didn't eat on a DD to your UD.

Cici, take the pressure off yourself because that's what's probably caused your mind to sabotage you. If it does turn into a UD, the world won't come to an end. You've a DD planned for Thursday. All will be resolved.

Relax, do your best, enjoy the BDs and please don't beat yourself up.

Cici hope the rest of your day went better, but don't beat yourself up if it ran away with you. A few good rotations after your BDs will get you back on track'

Thought I was going off the deep end into bingeland today but even though the old mentality was there, the "OFF" button kicked in. My OFF button is new and shiney and my favorite possession but sometimes I forget it has an autopilot and get panicky. The rest of the day should be breezy.

Cici52 - you're doing great. Good for you for planning your transitions. Even if the DD didn't go perfectly, you're still on the right path. I guess we can just expect some bumps in the road on this journey.

Ai Xin - welcome! You're getting good advice from the veterans here. I think you're gonna really love it here, and will do really well.

Dawn - beautiful new avatar! You look so trim and young!

I had a small whoosh this morning - down another 1.5 pounds. I did a MD yesterday so I could have an UD today. I went to an old friend's house for lunch and had no idea what she would serve. We had shepherds pie and stuffed figs/dates (not sure which). Totally yummy and way more carbs than I usually eat. Tonight I can have a nice, satisfying up day dinner (with a pre-dinner vodka gimlet - my favorite!)

Exercise vs. calories - so I put everything into the charts this AM, and turns out I burned more calories with exercise than I ate. - I'm not counting calories you use just breathing and stuff, lol.
I took a long walk with the kids 1st thing, then we went swimming & I did a bunch of laps - then this afternoon, I did 10 in 10 (1 hour) and then just now I went swimming again & swam/played vigorously for close to an hour...
It sounds good in a dieting sort of way to burn more calories than you eat, I guess - but it sounds kind of scary too..
Is it bad? Should I be doing less on DD?
*still very new to counting calories*

Hey SoCal....why should you think about doing less on a DD? You're feeling good and enjoying yourself...that's what counts. Whatever you can do, please do...

Hiya all. So glad to have found this place. I've been sort of doing JUDDD for about 2 weeks now since reading the book. But re-read the book last night and after reading here for a couple days I've realized I really need to get my DDs to 500 calories or less. Dr Johnson's site gives me about 390 but I'm going to go with 500 now and work my way down.

I want to lose 20-25 pounds. I'm not going to weigh myself all that often as it tends to make me a little crazy when I do. I don't care that much about losing it quickly, I just want it off and to be able to keep it off with a WOE that is sustainable for life. This seems like it might be the one.

Looking forward to learning more through this great forum.

Cici I'm glad you turned it around!
Some great results happening for people.

I had the weirdest UD yesterday. I just wasn't hungry.
I forced myself to eat my muesli breakfast late in the afternoon and reluctantly had a good dinner at 8.30pm but was still hunting round for sensible things to make up the 500 cals deficit at 11pm. Thank goodness for real cheese!

(Actually two glasses of wine isn't a particularly sensible solution but I had a celebration left over from the previous DD. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

We Brits are shocking with our wine! I have done the same many times, a glass of red wine and some dark chilli chocolate is a favourite top up for me!

Welcome IloveMustard I am glad you are going to raise your DDs. 500 is much more doable to start with and if you can lose with that number all the better. Many, many do.

lowcarbinca, if you feel good doing all that exercise then that is brilliant. If you do feel you need more food towards the end of a day like that then it would be fine I am confident!

Great work everyone

It's so odd - I actually have more energy on DD than UD - and don't feel like I need more food at all. Today will be my 2nd day doing VLC on a DD (which also means VLF, lol (Very Little Food!) and I'm interested to see the results. Once the breakfast dishes are done, the kids & I are going to walk up to the tennis courts, play some tennis (and I do mean 'play' since none of us can 'tennis' worth a lick) and then go swimming - great way to start the day, for sure!!

LowCarbinca you seem to have the magic. Enjoy the tennis play. How fun that you and your kids can enjoy this activity together.

Yesterday's celebration was wonderful in all ways. My food log came out under my UD allotment though admittedly some guestimating calories not knowing exactly how things were prepared. Since the day before turned into an extra UD too, I am really enjoying the idea that today is a DD and I am back on rotation. I have been evaluating my first month on this WOE and find that while I have been in WLM the whole time, I rarely have DD as low as the 388 calculator suggestion. Mostly they have been under 500 with a few 400 and a couple 600. Starting today, I am going to work on that and hopefully manage a cleaner month #2. I know I always feel confident and energetic in the morning but somewhere around 3-4 start to rationalize more food into the picture. Also, have a hard time if hungry at bedtime. Kind of feel like powering through one day of total fast might be the key to getting past these issues. Anyway, don't know what the afternoon will bring but hoping to find a way to get it really right.

Locarbinca sorry for this very late answer...
I am also a September newbie...but I thought I could share my experience with exersize and DD...

I exersize very hard 5-6 days a week. I have done that for 5 years now. Very hard = dripping with sweat, burning at least 400 cals per session sometimes more than 500 cals.

I do not compensate for calories burnt, by eating more. I have a coffee before and one about an hour after the workout (the first hour I only have water as vigourous exersize depress appetite for a little while) and then fast until 4 pm when I have a dinner of less than 300 calories. This works for me. But obviously we are all different and I would advise that you listen to your body...

I worried in the beginning... the mommy inside my brain tried to tell me what I should and should not do... but I feel fine and I am very pleased with my results. I am burning fat and gaining lean muscle.

I have also found that I have the most ennergy for exersize on my DD. Probably because I did good "carbo loading" on the UD.

Good luck with your weight loss and exersize journey!
