Bullet-Proof Coffee... do we count the calories?
On a down day, is what I'm asking about. Not sure -- that's a lot of calories to just ignore, so I'm really unsure about this one. What do you think?

I would. Several of us here experimented with not counting EVCO, and found that a lot of us gained or stalled by not counting it. YMMV.

I never found the bulletproof coffee to be satisfying enough to abstain from eating on a DD. I would rather have black coffee and be able to eat something for dinner!

I count the calories. It tides me over to a @300 cal dinner. The other DD that's all I had. Just the fat in the coffee. However, I'm still experimenting. For some people it may be 200 calories down the flipping drain that gives them no relief.

So, Steph -- you use it as a meal-replacement almost on the DD's? For the first two meals of the day, that is. That's a great idea -- wonder if it would satisfy me that long... I'm on my third DD today, and this is actually the first day I've had much real hunger. Must be something in the air, as I've been reading about hunger a lot on this board lately! lol

I did a Google search and found a great site with a recipe. Man, it sounds good. I was tempted to try it right then. However, I'm in the middle of a great DD where I've only had 40 calories (half and half in my coffee this morning) and lots and lots of water. I'm not feeling hungry at all and every time I step on the scale it's been going down a teensy bit every time. This may be a sign I'm getting rid of that weird bounce up I experienced yesterday morning. Don't know. Gonna hang in there. But, some time soon it's Bullet-Proof coffee for me!

This is the recipe I found:
Recipe Start with 500 ml (2 mugs) of black coffee brewed with mold-free beans (important) Add 2 Tbs (or more, I prefer 80 grams, about 2/3 of a standard stick of butter) of Kerry Gold or other UNSALTED grass-fed butter Add 30 grams of MCT oil for max energy, weight loss and brain function (optional if you have none) Blend with a pre-heated hand blender, Magic Bullet, or (best) counter top blender until there is a creamy head of foam It’s really fast and easy to prepare. Allow me to stat that salted coffee is a crime. Do not do this with salted butter. Bleah. Kerrygold butter or another grass-fed brand of butter really matters because corn or soy-fed cows don’t make butter with the same fats. Those butters don’t blend well, don’t taste good, and don’t make you feel Bulletproof. Grass-fed butter is much healthier than other butter. It doesn’t make cholesterol levels worse, it optimizes them! Starting your day with grass-fed butter will give you lots of energy and it will give your body healthy fats that it will use to make cell walls and hormones. If you’re like most of my friends who try this, your body is so starved for healthy fats that you feel like you can’t get enough. It will take your body a week or so to fully turn on its fat digestion systems when you switch to a high healthy fat breakfast of Bulletproof coffee. If at first it is a little too rich, try using less butter at first and build up to the amount you like. Taking a betaine HCl or digestive enzyme supplement with your coffee will also help your body digest the butter." After I read it, I looked up MCT oil and it sounds like EVCO would act just like MCT. So, I'm going to take Stephanie's lead and make it with coconut oil. I love the idea of blending it in the blender so it has a nice foam. |

Oh, I'd heard of it before (and it's not entirely unlike the "butter tea" drunk in Asia);
I just wondered when it became a "thing" with the JUDDD BUDDDs! ![]() ETA: I think I found it! DD Tuesday! What's cooking? Last edited by piratejenny; 08-23-2012 at 06:02 PM.. Reason: ETA |

Just a little warning. If you are not used to high fat, this can cause some tummy issues.
![]() I suffered a bit the first few times that I made this. If I have coffee instead of tea on a DD, I like mine black or with h/h to save my calories. One cup of bulletproof made according to recipe has about 304 calories, but it will boost the fatburning for the day. |

Just FYI, I do not follow the original recipe. Mine is this:
8 oz of coffee (brewed from whatever bean from wherever) 1 tbsp coconut oil (nutiva brand) 1 tbsp unsalted butter (generic brand--I've even used salted) I whir it in my magic bullet. Then I sip at it. The reason I started drinking it was that I was desperate to find something, anything, that would help me hold on through my main working hours until dinner. Carbs in the morning were a disaster for me. Even Greek yogurt wasn't doing the trick. Eggs were better. So, I thought I'd try straight fat. I am not yet fully convinced that it's worth the @200 calorie expenditure on a DD, but I do admit that not only have I been losing faster, but it does seem to have some staying power. |

Sounds like it's really working for you, Steph, and I hope it continues to do so.
There have been discussions in a couple other JUDDD threads about whether having fat in the morning, but no protein or carbs, still counts as "fasting". Since I'm diabetic and take my blood sugar in the morning and whenever I do food/supplement experiments, I can tell you that my body does not seem to register fat alone as a signal that the fast is over. In my case, this is bad; my blood sugar (and presumably cortisol) remains elevated for hours & hours or until I eat protein or carbohydrate. Breakfast really *is* the most important meal of the day, for people like me!!! ![]() But for those of you for whom fasting isn't a problem, I think my blood sugar readings show that fat might not "break the fast", and the benefits & fat burning will continue. I'm not sure this means that the calories "don't count". But since they aren't triggering insulin, they probably can't get stored, so they get used up. Quote:
Many years ago, a friend taught me to put a pinch of salt into the coffee grounds before brewing--it makes it "smooth"! ![]()

Steph,
I may try your way instead. I love coffee or tea for breakfast. PJ~ I believe you are correct on the fat fast. I am going to try it again and will let you know how it goes. I have seen a lot of folks do this and fast right on through the day. I sure like to have a dinner, so I am wondering if I can't make it a 200 cal cup and then have a 200 cal dinner? I agree with PJ on the salt. I add salt to the grounds since I read it is supposed to help with bitterness. It is a habit now so I don't know if it works or not.
BUT I don't like anything but cream as a fat source in my coffee so I won't be trying bulletproof coffee. |

So ... does sweetener of choice go into this stuff? Somehow, SF DaVinci Salted Caramel seems a good choice.

I don't do coffee with butter, but with coconut oil. I like to do IF, and can easily go 16hrs with what Mike O'Donnell likes to call "a cup of Starvation Mode."

I had this this morning and it was pretty good! No hwc or sweetner. That's new for me! Blending in the magic bullet made all the difference. I tried just stirring the other day and I didn't like it.

Here's a tip on how to mix it right in the cup:
Coconut Oil in coffee, avoid the oil slick If I have to haul out the blender in order to make something AND wash out the pitcher, I probably won't bother! I love my immersion blender!!! Last edited by piratejenny; 08-24-2012 at 08:08 PM.. Reason: sentence all wrong :/ |

When I made this, I used an immersion blender. I would still rather eat my cals but it was an interesting experiment.
I used Organic Valley Pastured butter....If I want to enjoy the wonderful flavor of this product, I don't want to hide it in a cup of coffee. |

This is another one of those posts that, to me in England, reads as though it comes from another universe
Magic bullet? Bullet proof coffee?? BUTTER IN COFFEE??? Sacrilege! I don't seem to have a problem during the day now. I drink my coffee and redbush tea black (or red I suppose) and don't really feel hungry now I have slowly moved my food down the day. I do take a few pieces of fruit into work and have miso paste, if I really need to feel as though I have eaten something - I have 3 different types so I can ring the changes, all for about 12 kcals. |
