Did anyone start out with shakes?

So I've read the book, and the author highly recommends starting out your down days with meal replacement shakes. I shudder thinking about the slim-fast days of my 20s!

I've come up with quite a few very low calorie meals I think I could work with and some pre-packaged things like Luna Bars (180 cals and super filling with a huge cup of ice water) but I'm wondering how folks feel about the shakes. Any good/bad experiences?

I'm looking at my schedule and trying to decide how to schedule the up and down days so I can get started. I'd like to get back to running, and the MUDDD schedule kind of appeals to me, as I would be guaranteed a good size breakfast after my runs which are normally on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. But I could also do a running schedule that runs over 2 weeks and work the traditional plan I think.

I've been lurking quite a bit - looking forward to getting to know everyone.

no shakes. I may have made a protein smoothie here or there, but no prepackaged crap.
Good raw hemp or Sunwarrior warrior blend protein powder with some almond milk and pb2 is a great quickie, or with ice and yogurt.

No shakes. I hate artificial sweeteners, and the liquids just don't stay with me long enough. Plus, I like food I can chew!

I did shakes for two weeks. Worked well for me since I didn't have to do anything but sip my shakes and keep on keeping on. I still use shakes for DD's when I am at a craft show or goat show. Easy peasy.

Real, chewable food for me. I will have a shake once in a while, but also not the pre-packaged store-bought versions. I feel much more satisfied with food, and it didn't hurt my induction any.

I did EAS shakes with veggie sticks and 1/2 a hard-boiled-egg per DD meal for 2 weeks at first in 2009, back when several on this board were mentioning the EAS brand products.

It was fine, but I was glad to continue on to more regular food.

I see the wisdom in having a start with exact calories and changing to a different food to keep yourself reminded you are embarking on a changed way of eating on DDs. Also there is wisdom in having boring foods to start so that you aren't tempted to have a greater quantity per meal.

I don't think the shakes are necessary, as long as you strictly track the calories you eat - most people underestimate calories.

I didn't use shakes, but the idea of really boring, I won't overeat this food, I did. First 3 weeks of DDs was nothing but celery, Lettus and at dinner a 1/4 lb of grilled fish. Now I fast until a bedtime snack which I limit to 180 calories tops.

I didn't do any shakes and I was just fine. I think the key is, like Whitlin' said, strictly track the calories you eat. I still do a lot of energy/protein bars because I like 'em and know the exact calorie count.

I did not do shakes the first 2 weeks because shakes don't fill me up and they actually make me hungry. Every now and then I make my own protein shake in my blender. The last ones I made had gluc powder to make them thick and filling. But, I think it was on an UD just because I felt like it.

You can definitely eat real food and keep your DD calories where you need them to be.

Glad you came out of lurkdom! It will be fun getting to know you more.

Oh good. I'm re-reading the book and I really couldn't think of a pre-made shake that I wanted to waste money on! So glad the consensus is with me.

I was considering doing some juicing, and I found a site that will calculate the calories of the juices based on what you put in. But I think in the beginning I will make a DD menu of low calorie meals and stash some Luna bars for emergency meals.

I think I will use ****** to track my calories as well. I really like the interface for the online site and the app.

Carly--do you find that near-total fasting like you do makes a difference in how you lose? I'm trying to budge a 3-week stall after a 5-lb loss the first week of JUDDDing, and I'm willing to try super low DDs if necessary...

I did the shakes the first time I tried JUDDD several years back. Like someone above stated I found I really need to chew something. The shakes just don't work for me.

Recently my loss rate has increased again, so I don't think it has hurt in anyway. My DD calories are less that 355 so 185 is more than half. I never did the 500. At my start weight my DD calories were 380 and I kept to that until 1) I lost a bit of weight and 2) the appetite suppression kicked in big time so I didn't really mind waiting till bed for a snack.

I didn't bother with shakes, either. I prefer food I can chew and savor. Shakes aren't meals to me. I have the stuff to make them, but never bother anymore.

I knew from hard-won experience that shakes weren't going to see me through the difficult times. Satiation has a lot to do with chewing.

Well I'm starting today. Have decided against the shakes (thanks guys!) but I'm still debating whether to start out regular JUDDD or just try to establish the MUDDD plan (which works better with my schedule) right off the bat. But I do know I need a DD breakfast. Gonna go wrangle something up - wish me luck!

I did the shakes the first 3 DDs and it was HORRIBLE! I was hungry and hated it. Thanks to this forum, I realized it was not necessary and switched up the plan. I found my fave DD meal (1 carrot, 1 celery boiled in chicken broth w/herbs) and that made all the difference!

I tried shakes for 1 DD only! I do use atkins bars though, because I find them easy and filling!

I keep MRM whey protein shake mix on hand. At 85 cals a scoop and 18g protein (the 100% natural whey, not the other kind they make) with a cup of almond milk @ 35cals is a good calorie filler when I need it (and the dutch chocolate is really good!).
