Benadryl for insomnia: weight gain, hunger?

I posted over in the ML but I'll post here too:

Has anyone ever taken Benadryl and noticed weight gain and/or an increase in appetite?

My doc recommended it a couple months ago, and I've had no luck losing weight for about 2 months...I only recently realized that these things coincided. I thought it might have been due to a change in medication (pharmacy switched to a different generic brand) and what with TOM, and really humid hot days, and other factors...sometimes it takes me a while to notice a pattern!

I don't take it every night...maybe 2 or 3 times a week if I've had a few nights in a row of not being able to fall asleep until the wee hours (3 or 4am )

Anyway, I took 2 Benadryl last night and I have been SO hungry all day!!!

Has anyone found an effective pharmaceutical* medication--Rx or OTC--that didn't cause weight gain?

*I've tried dozens of natural ones...I have many partial bottles of things I could try again...I would like info on *unnatural* sleep aids!

Hmmmm.... I take Benadryl a couple of nights per week and don't really notice it effect my hunger. At least I don't think it does! I'll pay closer attention from now on! I usually only take one Benadryl, but occasionally I'll take two. That seems to work the best for me as far as a sleep aide. I know some people who like Ambien, which is prescription, but it can also have some side effects for some people.

Sorry I'm no help. Just noticed your post and found it interesting. I really will pay attention to my hunger levels the next time I take it.

Hi PJ, I am pretty sure that I always have water retention the day after using Benadryl to help me sleep. I don't use it too much anymore, not really because of the scale gain, but more because it doesn't always help me sleep unless I take a "healthy" dose of it, and then it really zonks me and sometimes the next day I feel a bit disoriented.

If there is a weight gain/increase in appetite for some users, I wonder if this is partly due to it being in league with antidepressants? I read somewhere a while back that it targets the same receptors, and those cause many people to have hunger and weight gain, so... just a thought.

Have you tried melatonin or herbal remedies?

Yes...dozens...

I'm thinking of trying melatonin again, but as I recall it made me extremely groggy. Or I'd wake up shortly after taking it, and be unable to fall back to sleep.

Jen,

Have you tried Theanine Serene w/ Relora?

From their site~

Contains the amino acids L-theanine, to support relaxing brain wave activity

Contains taurine to ease tension, as well as the calming neurotransmitter GABA

Features magnesium to support muscle and nerve relaxation

Contains calming holy basil leaf extract and Relora® to gently soothe away
the tension in your body

2 tablets daily, or as recommended by your health care professional

My son and I have had great results with it. Now, you have to take it a few days regularly before the effects fully kick in.

One reviewer wrote...

But oh how glad I am that I did find it.

It really did not matter at that point - I NEEDED to find a way to sleep. I had tried melatonin, HTTP all of the recommended supplements. All I can say is...after you take the two tablets and drink a glass of water..settle back into your comfy bed and before you know it..your alarm will be going off in the morning..you will awake feeling FULLY rested. You know like that deeeeep down rested havent had that kind of sleep in a long time kind of rested!!!!

I take 2 Benadryl every night and haven't noticed any ill effects. I've been doing it for years though, so I have probably adjusted.

My aunt swears by Valerian root. I take it sometimes for anxiety, and it does help keep me calm (car trips mainly, where I'm a passenger, not a driver), but it doesn't help me sleep. My aunt also has a pot prescription, so I'm not sure which helps her more.

Sunday,
have you tried the "Theanine Serene" without Relora?
They have 2 formulas; one with, one without.
Just wondering if you've tried both & noticed a difference.

I have used l-theanine on its own and it's wonderful for relaxation and focus; like meditation in a bottle!
It doesn't make me sleepy, but sometimes it helps me fall asleep if I lie down and try to sleep.
One night I took it and didn't go to bed, but played Tetris; I blew past my previous high score--by a lot, like 50%!
I came across it one night when I was wondering if anything existed that would counteract caffeine!!!

I take melantonin myself. I have heard there is an extended release version available now...

I've also heard eating a little carb right before bed helps.

Yes, I have. In fact, my first trial was with Relora (alone) and it was recommended by a doctor who was helping me with stress and relaxation. I have had quite a bit of anxiety in my time.

I did notice the difference, but when I was looking for my son something. He was suffering with lots of stress/anxiety and trying to go to school fulltime, this was highly recommended on the health blogs. It has been compared to Xanax. I don't know, because I never took Xanax, but just thought it may work well for you.

My son has a lot of trouble sleeping and Tina (mykidsteacher) suggested Calm Forte. It is an herbal sleep aid and relaxing med. It has done wonders for my son. I have no clue what it does for hunger, but I can tell you, HE loves that stuff! I buy it at our local health food store.

Ha, I was tearing apart my house at 4am looking for l-theanine...found an empty bottle......finally found another bottle with 3 lonely little capsules!
Took one, and also found my Calms Forte (which I haven't seen in quite a while); took 4.

The problem with the natural stuff is I always have to take 2 or 3 or 5 things.
For example, last night: DE, magnesium, l-theanine, Calms Forte.

Melatonin takes a bit of tinkering with doses to get it right. My husband takes a whole 2000mcg but that much will make me groggy as hell in the morning. 500mcg is sufficient for me--sometimes even less, so we like the Trader Joe/Trader Darwin chewable brand.

With Melatonin, sometimes less is more. You might start by biting that pill in half and then working your way up to the dose that works best for you.

I think the antihistamine sleep aids make me gain, bloat, and now I am scared because they have been linked to senility. Why do I watch the news and read things?
My naturopath told me women with pcos/endocrine issues like mine should never take melatonin. I took it for years when my syptoms were first worsening. I still take one if I travel and have jet lag, but that is once every few years so I cannot stress over that too much.
Never encountered much success with valerian or other herbal soothers personally.
I just avoid most caffeine and drink hot water at night. Have to have zero electronics at least an hour before bed. All transmittable signals are off in the house at night, hubby and I are both really sensitive to the electronics/lights thing so our whole house is on timered power strips. If I don't stick to my natural body clock I suffer long bouts of insomnia. Ain't hormones grand? will look for l-theanine
Also, our power bill is under $30 a month after doing that, and we are electronics junkies.

I must be the only one who takes either a Tylenol PM or Sleep-Aid (both Walmart versions ) when I need a good night's sleep. Bendryl works good, I just have to take a half of one!! The PM pills I only take one or half of one. I sleep good and, despite being majorly stuck weight-wise right now, have never noticed any weight stall.

And I haven't been taking PM pills for 30 years, the length of my Battle with the Bulge!

PJ, I mentioned this somewhere else, so forgive me if this is of no interest. I was told that after taking Melatonin you should be in darkness as soon as possible. I was advised to use an eye mask especially in summer.

I can't obtain melatonin in the UK except on prescription, so this was a professional's advice. (I don't use it any longer, it was a menopause issue, but I do use still use an eye mask in the summer, really helps me.

I've never taken melatonin long-term myself, just a pill here and there. I tried Tryptophan, Theanine, SAMI, and Relora (not all together) years ago hoping it would help with anxiety, but it didn't help me with that or with sleep. But I do like the product Natural Calm. A friend of mine tried it after I did and said it also helped her sleep.

You probably know about and have tried everything in the HFS. I hope the solution works out for you soon. I know I have to avoid caffeine in the evenings and also too much alcohol in the evenings as well.

I take benadryl most nights (Costco brand) and haven't noticed anything...but now you've made me paranoid. I actually take it for allergy purposes, but I'm going to try to go without it now! I do retain water, but I always thought it was hormones and thyroid. We will see!

hot water after natural calm does it every time..just take a small dose.
hot water does soothe me, and then I'm not adding caffeine or anything else for my body to process before bed. Can't hurt, right? I developed that habit about a quarter century ago when pregnant with my first child. Hooray hot water.

I take 2 Tylenol PM every night. I think it makes me bloated in am. I actually weigh 3 lbs less on DD evenings than in the morning and usually over a pound less on UD evenings. But I don't think it makes me hungry just bloated.
