Sunday et al, I have my fingers, toes, eyes, etc crossed for you. I am firm believer in shaking things up and I think what you are doing is a great and very reasonable shake!

Chuckle, in maintenance I find myself eating more and more of my favorite foods: veggies, fruit, and fat/cheese sauce. Entire weeks have gone by during which I never touched meat. So, I am kinda doing your opposite: adding some meat/protein back. Hmmmm, I have not read PHD yet. But, I used to really enjoy curried liver. Hmmmmmmmm

Oh no, I can't do liver. My mom made it once a week when I was a kid and it was required eating. I would cut mine up in the tiniest of pieces then swallow each one without chewing, like vitamins....

I'm doing a potato DD today to see if I can do it. If each medium potato has 100 calories then two for breakfast, one after work today and two for dinner should put me around 500 calories. I've been doing WW but the first week I lost 4 ounces. I weigh again on Friday and maybe if I throw in a couple of DD's I might lose a pound or two. I like what WW has to teach as far as portion control and behavior modification but seriously if I can't lose any weight doing it, I won't be able to hang with it. I don't need fast but 4 ounces a week is torture.

Hey Sunday~ just to let you know, I did 500 calories of potatoes yesterday and it was pretty easy. Having a WW "up" day, counting my points etc. Another PDD tomorrow then weigh in on Friday! I think I could do this for awhile....

I've always liked the way JUDDD makes me feel but I had such a hard time on my DD's toward the end. This is much more doable, these potatoes are "comforting" and filling. I could eat them every other day for quite a long time I think. Let the experiment begin......

I've been meaning to ask this-- so, given that on a DD, you could go without eating entirely (theoretically), is that why it's ok to eat potatoes all day?
I know the skins have vitamins and stuff, but it's just doesn't seem like a balanced meal.

but again, if you could skip eating, then when you do eat, you wouldn't need a balanced meal-- is that part of the idea (aside from the potatoes not imposing as much on the GI and all that stuff)...
?

I think the potato fast works well for folks because it is very filling for so low cals. 2 baked potatos = 346 cals 8/64/5

Remember, this is a hack. Not a nutritional one over a long period of time either. Nancy, or someone else may know the best way to word this, but if you keep your fat low, your macros are going to be mostly carb, with very low protein. So, your body is going to release weight due to 2 things, very low cals and the fact that you do not have protein/fat in the picture. It has been said that this will work with rice as well.

No, it most certainly isn't the best nutritionally. That is one reason why, I moved my tater day to one egg/slice of turkey for lunch and then baked potato for dinner 5 hours or more later. I find it painful to go without protein for too long. 16-20 hours is long enough.

Hi Soren~Sunday is right. Potatoes have very little fat and low calories. They have a small amount of protein. They are easy on the tummy and very filling. 500 calories on a DD of whatever you want within the caloric parameters. I had an incredibly easy time eating only potatoes yesterday. I've done eggs, salad and chicken, tuna and salad and all kinds of combos to 500 calories but I have to say the potatoes were the easiest most satisfying DD in a long while. It is enabling me to JUDDD again, while on WW... which is weird but I have my reasons.... If you're worried about vitamins, just take a multi every day, it couldn't hurt.

Laura I'm so excited that you're excited! It's a great plan.

Soren and all~

After posting to you, I began googling and believe it or not, it is all over the place. The tater craze. There is more info than you will ever want to read on Mark's Daily Apple and also Free the Animal.
But in brief, this is what I have captured...

Quote:
The potato diet works because:

Potatoes have a low calorie density and a high satiety value per calorie.

Eating a diet that is composed almost exclusively of one food is low in reward, low-moderate palatability, low in variety, and has a high sensory-specific satiety. Even if you dress up your potatoes as well as you can, you're still eating potatoes. This tends to reduce calorie intake.

Potatoes are nutritious enough (including complete protein) that they can be the sole source of calories for an extended period of time. However, they are not a complete source of all micronutrients and deficiencies will eventually arise.
Anyone interested in reading up on the tater craze can learn a whole lot by googling.

Also, I do want to backup and say that I believe taters, sweet taters, and taro to be safe starches and have been including in my diet as per the PHD. Dr. Jaminet & Chris Kresser both encourage safe starches and have spoken about it at health panels at Harvard, which should be easy to find as well.

From his site~
Quote:
There are literally billions of people eating high-starch diets worldwide, and you can find many examples of cultures that consume a large percentage of calories from starch where obesity, metabolic problems and modern, inflammatory disease are rare or nonexistent. These include the Kitava in the Pacific Islands, Tukisenta in the Papa New Guinea Highlands and Okinawans in Japan among others. The Kitavan diet is 69% carb, 21% fat, and 10% protein. The Okinawan diet is even more carb-heavy, at 85% carb, 9% protein and 6% fat. The Tukisenta diet is astonishingly high in carbohydrate: 94.6% according to extensive studies in the 60s and 70s. All of these cultures are fit and lean with low and practically non-existent rates of heart disease and other modern chronic disease.

Some of the longest lived cultures in the world consume large amounts of starch. Okinawans over the age of 65 (who grew up eating a traditional diet) are a prime example. According to a study of the traditional Okinawan diet in 1949, they obtained 85% of calories from starch, mostly from sweet potato.

Hey good morning!

I finally had scale movement! I lost 2.2lbs this week. I've been at 217.8 & 217.4 for a month. This week I did two potato DD's along with WW (at slightly higher daily points) 215.2! I will continue my experiment of potato DD's. I'm pretty excited since I thought my ability to lose anything was broken.

I have read through this entire thread with interest. I started JUDDD yesterday commencing with a DD which was OK - hungry at bed-time but no appetite the next morning on UP. During the DD I had coffee with MCT oil for breakfast and didn't eat my salmon until around 5.00ish, but I had coffees throughout the day with some milk at work so I didn't do a proper fast I guess. I am aiming to use this to lose the last 10lbs that keep bouncing and I think it's a setpoint issue; as well as using JUDDD for life-time maintenance.

I just would like to know please what the general consensus is now on the fasting window? Do you fast on the DD and/or do you continue the fasting windows on your UD? What has worked best for you? Because I wasn't hungry at the start of UP I thought I could use this to my advantage and eat later, but I'm not sure if it will be too much fasting and could work against me.

Lastly, is it correct that Dr J has gone back to his day job so to speak or is not actively involved with the JUDDD diet? Do you know why - it seems to be very effective going by the posts on this board and seems a shame he's not continuing with it and tweaking it.

Hi Mojo,
You most certainly did a proper fast. With Juddd you can eat on DD, just try to stay below 500 cals and that way you are still considered fasting. I have to tell you that every person who I personally know on JUDDD has different methods that work best. Some do well with nothing but liquids, most do fine with some food during DD but remain under 500. Hopefully, you will join the New Juddd budd thread and learn from the others who have begun.

On Dr. Johnson, he must have decided that it would not be beneficial to run the JUDDD website? I wish he would because we have so many more questions now that we have done this for a while and even need to understand the maintainance period and such. I have tried to contact him, but his website no longer responds to emails. I suspect his book was not a big seller and this may have something to do with his inactivity.

Well, I tried again to submit a question and it comes back with an error. So, it may be better to try and find his medical practice and write there? I am at a loss.

Dr J's website contact seems to work intermittently. When it works, he responds. But then it stops again.

I don't know whether this means he has gone back to the day job or the company supporting the website is inconsistent. It is frustrating for those of us who want to learn more. At one point, I was crazy to hear what he said to do if a person's calculated DD calories were over 500...should they start at the higher number? should they start at 500 and go up?

Mojo, it is important to experiment and find the eating pattern that suits you best. But, I have literally never been a breakfast eater - so DD or UD, I drink some hwc in coffee, maybe nosh a bit of coconut oil, and extend the fast.

For awhile I found I had to eat about 500 calories at UD lunch or I stalled. Happily that passed and now I usually drink breakfast, drink lunch (bone broth - with veggies & meat if I am hungry) and do most of my eating between about 03:00 and 07:00 PM.

Thank you Sunday and Nancy.

Like you Nancy I will have coffee/CO for breakfast on UD and DD's and extend the fasting. It's early days but I think this is helping my bingeing. The freedom of UD's is such a relief; I've had a few nuts which are my trigger food, but am happy with just a handful. I'm grateful to the posters of this board leading me to JUDDD. I am hooked.

Happy Judding for sure.
I've lost 4.4lbs already and only on my 4th day with two DD's behind me.
Don't care if it's water weight, I can see a difference already and as I only have the last stubborn 11 lbs to eliminate it means I'm almost halfway there.
Eating like a queen one day and cleansing the next day - this diet is PERFECT.

Green Juice Fast - lost 26 lbs
HCG- 50lbs
JUDDD - 4.4lbs in 3 days
