As I read the question about if eating SOME calories on DDs was equivalent to fasting, I recalled reading an article by Dr. Mercola that said it is. I can't link it, but you can search his website for an article written on May 04 2012 called "Burn Away Fat Cells With This Simple Eating Trick". Here's just a little bit of the article that is most interesting to me:

Intermittent Fasting for Weight Loss

In part 1, Mark Sisson discusses the merits of using fasting—in whatever form—to achieve weight loss. Overall, the research is very favorable for this goal. He lists three studies from recent years into fasting for weight loss, all of which showed positive results:

Non-obese patients lost an average of four percent of their total fat with alternate-day fasting for 22 days. Their fasting insulin also decreased.i

Alternate-day fasting was also effective for obese patients in a 2009 study. On fasting days, participants consumed 25 percent of their daily calorie needs. On average, they lost just over 5.5 pounds in eight weeks, and about three percent of their total body fat. Total cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol decreased, while HDL ("good") cholesterol remained unchanged. Systolic blood pressure also decreased.ii

In young, overweight women, alternate-day fasting was just as effective as calorie restriction for promoting weight loss and improving metabolic markers.iii

One of the mechanisms that makes fasting so effective for weight loss is the fact that it provokes the secretion of human growth hormone (HGH), which is a fat-burning hormone. It also plays an important role in muscle building. Fasting also increases catecholamines, which increases resting energy expenditure, while decreasing insulin levels, which allows stored fat to be burned for fuel. Together, these and other factors will turn you into an effective fat-burning machine.

Hence, if like many tens of millions of people, your goal is to shed excess fat, fasting can be both effective and beneficial for improving many disease markers. The type of fast you choose appears to be less important, so pick whichever one fits your lifestyle, schedule, and temperament the best.

Great Laurie! Thank you for helping find this! I am going to go and read that article too. I think this is an area that will get much more research since the brain is benefited with fasting in such an amazing manner. Especially where alzheimers and stroke patients are concerned.

As for trying it out, I will still attempt the window, so I will be JUDDDing in IF manner with the help of a 7 hour window. 17 hour true fast and supplement as he suggests. I guess I would like to know if I notice any difference. Maybe I can get the losses moving again.

Sunday and Beverly, I'll be watching you. I'd love to try the window, but I'm trying my best to limit my UD cals these days (you know, just to see what happens if you follow the actual recommendations for a while ), and this leaves me so hungry in the mornings that I can't seem to delay the food thing.
Good luck with it. Let us know how it goes.

Kristin,

I know exactly what you say!!! I am a breakfast lover, so for me to skip on UD is pretty tough. But, the longer that I JUDDD, I have found sort of a strength in doing this. I am wondering if the pterostilbene is the *secret*, because I have always been a morning eater. My last meal was complete at 7:00 pm yesterday, so I will have DD lunch at 12:30 and DD dinner at 5:30. I am going to try and do this for 2 weeks, just so I know if it works better for me.

I want to link Whitlin's advice because it does pertain to what we are talking about with the "window" and an eating period for folks with blood sugar issues. It is wise to eat "some" protein every DD upon waking.

Q: NOT fasting better for adrenals (+ cortisol, blood glucose, etc)?

Good luck with it. Let us know how it goes.
And in a related story...

I have done the IF thing with about a 16-17 hour fast/ 7-8 hour eating window last year as per the Leangains protocol. I did get some benefits I think, lost pounds for a while, but I was still in that mindset of LC deprivation and I would go a bit crazy once in a while and always would gain it back and lose it over and over etc.

Well yesterday, lo and behold I actually kept to my cals for the no exercise level. 1567 to be exact. I felt good and didn't even have a snack after dinner! This is so not like me but I thought WTH, I may as well enjoy it while I can. Well I woke up STARVING this morning. Now I am on my second cup of coffee and doing okay. I am going to see if I can go until 1100 which would be 16 hours fasting. Like you Kristen, I am usually so worried/concerned/whatever that I can't eat if I want that it becomes a bit overwhelming mentally for me. I may try to see if I can look at it like a game, like how long can I go today before starting my eating window? I know once I get into a habit I seem to fair pretty well. Well except for that tiny little obsession of having a snack every single evening--that's a habit I grew up with so no telling how long that will take to change.

Yes, looking to you more committed girls for your results and observations....

Yes, this is sort of what I am doing.... a game.... yep, "Hunger Games".

I can so relate on the evening snack. I have a ...ahem... a "nut problem". Some folks have wine and mine is worse.

This is one of those posts that should be in the What is JUDDD........sticky.
There have been a few like the one re range of cals and the 14%......

These are so helpful and also keep us abreast of new/ongoing research but they get lost.

How does one go about moving these posts to the information thread?

I'm really glad this was made a sticky too! I know that I was totally unaware of the benefits of IF before stumbling upon JUDDD, but in less than 5 months my life has been transformed and the weight loss is only one piece of the fantastic pie- which you can eat on JUDDD (every other day).

Isn't it amazing? I really would be bummed if I have to ever postpone or delay JUDDD, because this has become so fun to me! This girl doesn't do JUDDD but she eats similar to Fast 5 by eating once daily. I am so impressed with her commitment to the program. 5 years is a long time to stick with fasting.

Oh, and she has lost 130 lbs!!!

Thanks YamYam.

I learned a lot from reading one of your threads several months ago. If I could only find it!

Scientific research involving Sirt1. The discovery of the first human sirtuin, SIRT1 resulted from research into the health benefits and life extension seen in multiple species on calorie-restricted diets. It sounds like the main focus is diabetes, but also anti-aging.

Wow! I just watched Michael Mosley's documentary and it definitely belongs here. It is so worth watching all the way to the end. About 3/4 of the way through he delves into Alternate Day Fasting (ADF, which is what JUDD is). The benefits are amazing. He ends up choosing the Five/Two diet which is eat normally 5 days of the week, fast any 2 days you choose. His fast on those two days includes eating 600 calories each fast day at any time he chooses.

His results in only 5 weeks were amazing in weight loss, dramatic reduction in blood glucose levels, triglycerides, cholesterol, and more. Everyone here needs to watch this. It's very motivating and just what I needed to see today to keep me going.

This was fascinating!! Truly. Thanks for posting this. I am more motivated than ever!
I do want to have my IGF-1 levels tested. I saw where I could do it, but the test costs $175.00. If anyone finds a less expensive one, let me know! My health plan won't cover this and my doctor won't order something like this.

I'm SO grateful for the Michael Mosley video!
Watched it on the weekend. My lovely man started watching, said he didn't have time for it, and found it so compelling that he stayed through till the end.
I may have mentioned that my lovely man is a head on a stick - skinny. But he does have high blood pressure and he has had a malignant cancer before, so the video's info is valuable for him.
He's going to try the five and two. I can't believe it.
If he loses a pound, I'll freak. Nothing like a skinny man to make you feel loke a fat woman
On the other hand,if he can lose his BP meds, we'll be very, very happy.

Thanks YamYam for posting! I was getting ready to ask for the other thread to be made a stickie and this will help get this message out as well!

Joy~ The amazing research on IF and cancer is very compelling as well as all of the other benefits of IF! Don't you just hate how men do so well with IF and women have to really work the program??? The best fact is that even though we don't see the lbs drop as fast as men, we can see it in our clothing and inches!

Bev~ Is the test the one that he says measures all of our IF factors? I am going to watch this again. I listen to it while working and it is so important to know all of the greatness included! Are you still doing the 16 hour total fast period? I can't tell you how much it is helping me to abstain from eating!!! I find the morning period getting much better than when I began. I admit to being a breakfast-addict!

Joy- that is so awesome!! I am so happy for you. I know what you mean about a skinny man making a woman look fatter!!

Sunday- the test I was looking at, where I don't have to go through my own doctor, for $175.00 tests IL-6/IGF-1 . But I did see one through Private MD Labs that does IGF-1 for $70.00. I don't know if the IL-6 would also be beneficial, but it was the IGF-1 that seemed of significant concern in the video. I have high LDL and triglycerides, but I can get those tested through my health care plan in October.
I am doing a 17 hour window for the fast and finding it very helpful to me. I am typically not hungry in the AM- my scary hunger monster time arrives at about 4:00 PM for me, but I am doing much better with this. I am also doing the other supplements he suggested. I think the BCAA helps me too.
I love all the findings and tips we discover here! The video gives me such motivation for improving my health. The key to fasting is to be able to stick with it and deal with the hunger and social pressures (and the psychological desire to eat). I can handle social pressures. I think I am handling psychological desire. It was the periodic intense bouts of hunger that were getting to me. I find doing this window is helping with that as well.

Have I said lately how GRATEFUL I am to everyone for sharing all of their findings?

Sunday- the test I was looking at, where I don't have to go through my own doctor, for $175.00 tests IL-6/IGF-1 . But I did see one through Private MD Labs that does IGF-1 for $70.00. I don't know if the IL-6 would also be beneficial, but it was the IGF-1 that seemed of significant concern in the video. I have been doing 16-17 hours. I am thinking 17 hours is optimal? Right? Oh, and I can't wait to have the blood lipids tested as well!!!
