I fell asleep fine last night. It was not the most restful sleep I've had, but for me there is a whole host of complicated factors. So, in my opinion I love it.
Cindy, I hope yours comes soon!!! |

Marie,
On another thread, we were discussing that JUDDD may cause some issues with insomnia due to calorie restriction on DD. In fact, some of the JUDDDers really struggled with less sleep on DD. ![]() |

It has nothing to do with pterostilbene, but rather with the extra energy that your metabolism makes while conserving energy on DD. I encourage you to try a supplement called Relora or Theanine Serene w/ Relora for insomnia. My son and I both have found the best sleep ever with this supplement. I found it at my health food store, but several years ago, my MD recommended Relora for stress and cortisol. You can do a bit of research in the reviews on Amazon. |

Having a really high-protein, low/zero carb breakfast is the only thing I've figured out.
(A Leptin Reset breakfast, in other words.) I have/have had insomnia troubles for years, but it is aggravated on DDs. And on any days that I skip breakfast, or have inadequate protein/too many carbs for breakfast. The "breakfast for better sleep" experiment Last edited by piratejenny; 08-07-2012 at 03:35 PM.. My reactions have been varied.
I took one this morning and was very hungry shortly after. Wasn't home so it was a couple hours before I ate. Took a second one and have still been hungry (painfully hungry, not "Eh, I can ignore it" hungry) all day. HOWEVER--my doctor recently told me to take Benadryl for my insomnia, and I am concerned it might be affecting my appetite. So maybe it's not the PSB. I'm going to skip the Benadryl for a week and see how I do. |

Sunday mentioned it for appetite suppression and that's pretty much all we've been discussing. I haven't seen any claims that it helps with pain. It is similar to resveratrol; both are considered anti-oxidants. I am not familiar with resveratrol being used for pain-- except in that it helps with cell repair so may be helpful in post-exercise recovery (not necessarily chronic pain). Of course, I could be wrong, but just want to point out that it's not what it's "famous" for and I wouldn't want anyone to feel they'd wasted their money on it. Sorry about all the pain!!! ![]()

Jenny & Marie,
Pterostilbene is a SIRT-1 mimetic. I am thinking that it is worth a try. It certainly couldn't hurt. It is so reasonable cost-wise in comparison to Resveratrol. In the studies that I read and quoted it does have anti-inflammatory benefits. From Life Extension site--- This natural compound favorably regulates genes involved in the development of cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and the system-wide inflammation that underlies a variety of age-related disorders. Pterostilbene (terro-STILL-bean), found in blueberries, grapes, and in the bark of the Indian Kino Tree, has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Pterostilbene and resveratrol are both stilbene compounds, closely related structurally, which gives them similar but not identical functions. Researchers have found that these two compounds work in a synergistic fashion to activate one’s “longevity genes.” From Wikipedia~ "Calorie restriction dramatically reduces production of inflammatory mediators linked to age-related conditions such as atherosclerosis, chronic inflammatory diseases, and even cognitive decline.8,40-51 At the level of gene expression, pterostilbene exerts virtually identical effects, suppressing those same genes in studies of inflammation-related conditions.23,31,52-54 And like calorie restriction, pterostilbene up-regulates specific brain proteins associated with improved memory.55,56" __________________

Deb, I just now saw your question! Tell me what your hubby is needing in supplements? Pterostilbene has so many different benefits and cognition is one of the major benefits. Hope to help hubby!

I don't think Netrition has it yet but they posted this week that it will be offered. Unless I got that all wrong.
Anyway, I got mine in the mail yesterday and had forgotten I had ordered it. Hope it is good for memory. Took one before breakfast but today is an UD so we shall see. I really should have waited to take it at lunch since afternoon is my weak time for ice cream. |

O.K. I have a raging headache and no reason for one except I took the pterostilbene this morning PLUS I am starving to death. I am going to die before lunch and I had my regular eggs for breakfast which always hold me until lunch.
I am not happy. Hope this isn't the way I react to this stuff. BUT I have accomplished a lot of work this morning. I am finishing up project after project that I have been dragging along on. Even with the headache. Last edited by adillenal; 08-08-2012 at 09:04 AM.. |

Adi,
That's exactly the reaction I had to Resveratrol. I tried it for several days and had that awful, raging headache each day. The first day I didn't take it, the headache went away. I've been fine with the Pterostilbene. ![]() |

Dawn - and I was fine with resveratrol but I can't think of any other reason for this headache and I have already taken something for it and it just won't stop. Ouch.
I only took one of the Jarrow brand at 50 mg. I will take it again in the morning just to see for sure. Maybe after a few doses I will get used to it. (I can hope) AND WHY AM I STARVING??? I am never hungry in the morning if I eat breakfast. I ended up eating "lunch" at 10:45. |

I haven't gotten a headache but yes, it seems to make me hungrier.
![]() Not just doesn't keep me from getting hungry, but makes me hungrier than usual. I haven't been able to do a down day all week. However, I *have* also been taking Benadryl to help me sleep and suspecting that could be a factor. Also, I feel like I had a strong reaction the 1st time I took it, but it didn't bother me as much on following days. Last night I didn't take Benadryl, and I took psb on an empty stomach this morning. I was hungry and it didn't go away, but it wasn't as uncomfortable as the days after I took the B. I made it about 4 hours after waking before I ate. I just don't know yet; going to keep experimenting. Also going to try taking it right before bed to see if it improves my fasting blood glucose. Thanks for info on Netrition - I am planning an order for the low carb necessities not available in Ireland (like low carb wraps!).
