What should I bring to eat on the plane ride(s)?
Hi JB's
So, I'm leaving Friday for my business trip to Manila (1 week) and Sydney (1 week). The first flight is about 15hrs, from Toronto to Hong Kong, where I have a couple hours to change flights (read: shop) and then it's just 2hrs over to Manila, and I should get to the hotel by 8pm local time or so (shower, eat, whatever). Then, from Manila to Sydney, it's 11hrs. Then Sydney --> Toronto, it's like 20hrs. So-- for the first flight, I can bring some food from home. For the other 2, not so much... but first things first. Here's what I've accumulated so far: almonds in 100cal paks sun chips in 100cal paks yummy falafel balls, 150cal for 4 balls (can be eaten hot or cold) I have some celery, and can aquire other veggies like carrots or snap peas, radishes.... I'd like a meat product-- maybe a pre-made meatball? turkey? I can't bring liquids-- no dressing, etc. But I have a seasoning salt and can pre-season the veggies and should be ok. mio flavoring in mango/peach and fruit punch (might just bring one?) Anything else you can think of that travels well UNCHILLED, doesn't involve liquid, gives me snacking options every couple hours (this is the reality of me and long flights...), and won't make me hugely fat in the space of 15hrs? NOTE: left to my own devices, I will buy $50 of sushi at the airport, and eat it all in the first hour on the plane -- and no one wants to see that happen.Advice sought and welcome! S. ![]()

90 calorie packs of Special K cracker/chips.
Can you bring Mio drops on the plane? I think the Mio drops are less than 3oz. I have diabetes and have been permitted to bring pudding/jello cups, but I had them in the bag with the pen needles and Byetta so I guess the TSA guy would have felt like a real jerk throwing them away. ![]() |

The Dixie Diners' Club Sticky Trail Mix Bars are actually very good, nutritionally sound, and extremely portable! (And wow, that's awesome, world traveler!)

I like Ostrim sticks.
But more importantly, what do you do? Sounds like a pretty cool job, whatever it is. |

Jerky, salami, and yes Steph, I do have the sticky bars in the house! I totally forgot. I also got some atkins granola bars, possibly for a down day or something as well...
I work at a software company, and I take care of internal enablement (read: training)... we're hiring a lot, globally (yay!) so I need to go to Manila to help our trainer there learn to do this internal class (read: he was supposed to do 70%, but now I'm doing like 98% and he'll do 1hr ).Since I was going to Manila, I offered to go to Sydney (so gracious of me! ) instead of having the few people there come to Manila too.Usually, I just go to our office in San Mateo CA S. |

Sounds like an interesting job with cool travel. I live sort-of near San Mateo, so that isn't quite as enticing as Australia and the Phillipines. I get to go to Target as much as I want to though.

Sunflower seeds in the shell are good for snacking and keeping yourself too busy to eat other stuff.
![]() Takes a LOT longer to eat 100 cals of sunflower seeds than 100 cals of almonds, for example!!! I also like jerky (beef or other) and it's so, so, so convenient! Also takes a while to eat... nearly impossibly to pig out on...too exhausting! Last edited by piratejenny; 07-17-2012 at 06:35 PM.. Reason: spelling |

You might want to have an empty cup, can, or bottle to put/spit the shells into. Sometimes I take them out of my mouth with my fingers and put them in a napkin...I'm not big on spitting, lol...but my son just spits them into a Snapple bottle or soda can. Depends on if you're worried about grossing out your fellow passengers. It's really not THAT gross, though! I find them helpful when people are eating popcorn, chips, etc around me. I love salty snacks!!! |

I also like jerky and/or Ostrim sticks. I have also found some low(er) cal granola bars.
Kellog's has a FiberPlus bar ( I get the choc. PB) 120 cal and not bad size. I keep these in the office for a quick snack when things get hectic and I don't have time for anything else. I manage a restaurant. |

The Ostrim stix sound great! I think I'll have to find some regular jerky though, but will keep those in mind, sound good to have around.
Thanks PJ on the sunflower seed tips! lol -- I think I'd do the napkin thing too ![]() I'll take a trip to the store and look at some more of the bars-- good to know about the Kellogg one-- hard to balance fat, carbs, and flavor ![]() |

For the plane pick foods that are quiet to eat and don't smell. Especially on a long flight, nothing like sitting next to someone who is crunching on loud smelly food for hours.

since i started JUDDD, when i had to fly i scheduled a DD for the flight and just tried to drink water and eat small amounts of the airplane meals (like the fruit and salad). i just made the whole thing a DD rather than trying to figure out the rotation with the changing time zones and all. anyway have a good trip.

One of the things I have to do is keep my bloodsugar up. Also, I get super tense that I'm *going to* get sick, so that doesn't help. So I go the other way-- I make my travel my UD, and try not to go super nutso, but accept that I can eat and not worry too much about it Thanks Kristin! |

Ok-- so I got lean beef meatballs (don't get me started on how the beef are lower cal than the turkey or chicken
)I got the lowest cal/carb crackers per weight-- seriously spent some time looking these all over. I have the falafel balls I got in-shell sunflower seeds I have salami and lite havarti I got turkey jerkey -- lower cal than the beef, and I like it just as well I have higher fiber oatmeal cookies (they're not big, about 100cal each--might not bring them? or maybe I will b/c they're better than whatever I'd buy in the airport I have the almonds and sunchips, and mio. I'll probably be in a carb coma and sleep a lot... not sure if that's a good thing ![]() Thanks for the help folks!!! S. |

Check that the airline allows you to take nuts on board. I have been on international flights where no nuts are permitted incas of nut allergies on board.
Sorry, but better to know first. |

are there limitations to what you can take on international flights? sometimes produce is a problem, as are the nuts as mentioned above. You may be buying airport food there friend. I always get whatever cut up cheese is available, veg and fruit cups, etc. I have had food denied going through domestic flights security, so it pays to check ahead.

Hi gang!
I'm back Very interesting trips-- the different weather, the people, the FOOD! I made sure to take advantage of every opportunity to try something new, and OMG they tried to stuff me in Manila! I wound up eating about 2x a day while there, b/c of the work schedule and the VOLUME of food, and I just wanted to eat good stuff, not the huge amount of rice and pasta they'd bring during the work day... so we'd go for a group meal before work (6pm-9pm) and start work at 9pm, and then I'd avoid the "breakfast" at 9pm, the lunch, the snack (white bread sandwiches and chips) and the "dinner" at 6am. Go back to my hotel and indulge in the great (included) breakfast buffet... Sydney was different-- I had a couple days where I skipped breakfast, had some fruit at work, and then went on with the meals-- they only brought sandwiches for lunch, ah well. Anyhoo-- for the plane rides-- on the way there, my plan was great. Probably could've gone with just the veggies even. I still had some leftover nuts and jerky, for Manila -> Sydney, but then I left everything on the plane b/c the Aussies have some crazy severe duty/import rules (basically, no food). On the way home, I couldn't find baby carrots to save my life, so I bought nuts, and these interesting dehydrated veggie chips-- literally dehydratesd (or freeze dried?) mushrooms, greenbeans, yellow yams, purple yams, green radishes-- VERY tasty! I do love that with JUDDD, I felt pretty "normal" and that I could eat without horrible guilt each day-- I wasn't doing rotations, but tried to have some low-er calorie days here and there, and also, not binge eat with that "I blew it" mentality-- so I feel successful on that front. Back at it today with my first DD back ttyl! S. |
