Shake/smoothie recipes- give me your best!

I just got a blender, and while I definitely will continue to eat some food on DDs, I like the idea of having some go-to's, especially for breakfast on DDs.

Would you please be so kind as to give me your favorite down day smoothie recipes? I want to have some go-to's. Thanks!

I'm interested too. I'm pretty boring and just do greek yogurt with water and mio, or Sun Warrior protein powder with just water for DDs.

Talk to me about the necessity of Glu. Is it worth it for me to go out and get it? If I use ice in this recipe, will that make it creamy and thick instead?

I think you have to use a gum like xanthan gum or glucomannan powder to get the body and thickness of a shake, otherwise the liquid and the ice sort of separate. Try it without and report back!

Oh... more like an icee, less like a shake. I see what you are saying. Where can I get Glu? Like at TJs or a natural food store?

5-6 frozen strawberries
few frozen raspberries
1/4 -1/2 cup greek yogurt, plain
1 small banana (1/2 large)
1 scoop vanilla whey
1/4 cup orange juice (or pomegranate juice)
handful of spinach leaves

If you don't use the banana, you have to add some sugar free syrup, honey, or agave. I've never done stevia since I'm allergic. Usually, 1-2 tsp is enough.

For DD, I use 1 scoop Sun Warrior Vanilla (not the Warrior blend, just the rice protein one), 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and a 3 strawberries, or 10 or so blueberries. I also add 1 T raw, virgin coconut oil (which I'm not actually counting right now). Yumminess that keeps me full till lunch.

I am enjoying a delightful protein icee for breakfast this morning. You were totally correct- I will be ordering some gluc.

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it.

Has anyone discovered a good substitute for Crystal Light powder? I like the flavor and low calories but would like something less ... chemically. (Pardon my highly scientific lingo...)

So I am researching gluocmannan powder today, and apparently ouizoid, you are the local expert! Can I pick your brain a bit more?

When using it to make shakes, should I mix it with the other powder first? Or with some liquid first? Also, does it need to be heated, or can I mix it with the PP and CL powder, then put that in my blender together?

Healthy Shamrock Shakes
Chocolate Frosting Shots!

She has lots more shakes though...

capella makes stevia sweetened fruit flavor drops or unsweetened as well in a zillion odd flavors like danish, vanilla cupcakes, etc. a little chemically, but without artificial sweetener. unless you make your own extracts or distillates or infusions I'm not sure how to avoid the chemical thing in a "flavoring" (if you know what I mean)

konjac powder/glucomannan flour does not require heat. USE sparingly. A little goes a long way. It doesn't work like cornstarch or other thickeners. Just sprinkle loosely (a glob may stay a glob) and mix in to whatever you are making whether it be a shake, a sauce, pudding, etc. I keep some in a shaker bottle with small holes for everyday use - just reusing a spice bottle.

I love the idea of re-using a spice bottle to shake it in. Thanks! Of course, that means I need to do enough cooking to empty a spice bottle.

Millergirl--whenever I can, I mix the glu powder with another powder. With 4C mix (splenda sweetened), with jello powder, with nut flours, depends on what I am using it for. B lou's idea of a shaker is great! Mostly, I am adding some other powder to whatever concoction I am making, so the glu disperses best in that way. For example, I just made a mocha shake and mixed 1/2 tsp glu with a packet of via coffee and a tablespoon of cocoa. Added almond milk and ice and blended. perfectly thick and smooth.

I make alot of recipeless shakes or tweak the ones I find. Banana Split, Blueberry Cream, Strawberry Banana, Strawberry Cheesecake, etc. I made this one for my UD today and thought I'd post it while my "recipe" was fresh.

Chocolate Mint Shake

2/3 c. Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 whole egg*
1 oz. (2 T) cream cheese
1 tsp. unsweetened special dark cocoa
2 tsp. sweetener
5 drops Chocolate Fudge Brownie Capella Drops (optional)
Chocolate syrup, couple squirts**
1 capful SF DaVinci Peppermint Paddy syrup***
Ice

* I use 1/4 scoop protein powder on a DD
** I use regular on an UD, SF on a DD
*** Peppermint extract would work, just not nearly as much and might have to add a little more sweetener.

Everything can be adjusted to taste or swapped depending on what day you're one.

I rarely do shakes, and I've stopped using protein powder at all, but when I get in the mood, I like pumpkin shakes, like pumpkin pie or pumpkin bars sort of taste.

About a cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk...
About 1/2 cup of canned plain pumpkin...
Some pumpkin pie spice and extra cinnamon, to taste depending on how strongly flavored you enjoy pumpkin desserts...
About 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract...
Walden Farms 0-Calorie Pancake Syrup to sweeten to taste (I like it sweet)...

Either just blended together, or with ice cubes blended into it to give it more of an ice cream shake appeal.

Only 100 calories or so..

You surely could. And I don't think it would alter the 'sweet pumpkin dessert' flavor or give it an eggy taste, because the spices and bit of vanilla can be as strong as they need to be or are desired. The Walden Farms 0-Calorie Pancake Syrup has a sort of maple flavor to it anyway, so that's a real nice sweetener to use for this shake.

How much glue powder should go in one shake? I just used a 1/2 teaspoon, and I'm worried it was too much. I have visions of that lady in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory who exploded!

Also don't think anyone answered the question of when you throw it in? Do you mix it with liquid first?
