Hunger is not an emergency
Dr. J. Berardi wrote this in his e-book and every now and then I re-read it for perspective. Thought someone else might want to read it today. He wrote this when he was experimenting with Intermittent Fasting.
Google: artofmanliness Intermittent Fasting: A Beginner’s Guide Hunger is not an emergency Many people think hunger is an emergency and panic when it kicks in. But hunger is just a feeling. Commit an entire day to fasting, and you’ll realize that hunger really isn’t something to panic over. Nothing really bad happens if you miss a meal or two. After all, our prehistoric ancestors didn’t have a Taco Bell on every corner. We evolved to deal well with hunger. Allow yourself to get hungry. Then sit with the feeling rather than trying to make it go away immediately. Physical vs. psychological hunger Often when people think they’re hungry, they’re not experiencing true physiological (body) hunger, but rather psychological (head) hunger. The better you know the difference between the two, the better you understand your body’s signals. By the end of the day, you’ll feel real body hunger. In the future, use that feeling as a reference point to interpret your appetite correctly. Eating as a privilege I’m the Director for a non-profit called The Healthy Food Bank. We raise funds and food for food banks throughout North America. Most of that goes to families who are “food-insecure.” They’re not people sleeping on sewer grates. They’re people who are barely scraping by. They have food, just not enough to feed their kids every meal, every day. Taking a day to fast reminds us that there are people out there who fast regularly - not voluntarily - but because they don’t have food. We’re reminded that eating is a privilege. Eating as a responsibility Eating is also a responsibility. When we cram our bodies full of fast, processed, lowquality food, we’re not taking that responsibility very seriously. A day without food resets our perspective. We can remember to not take eating for granted. Food marketing Food advertising and marketing often flies under our radar when we’re fed. But that’s exactly what makes it so effective: It works on our subconscious. When fasting, everything changes. Food marketing jumps out at us. We’re aware of the manipulation. With awareness comes power. No more mindless junk food runs prompted by billboards or radio commercials. Now you’re in control.

I have read this before and it really resonates with me. I'm trying to teach my daughter to tell the difference, though it's hard with young ones. I sure don't want her to end up like her dad and me.
Thanks for sharing Yam! |

Great post YamYam!
This is exactly what I am working on and it truly is helping me. I wish that I had suffered with extra weight much earlier in life, rather than in my later years. I think it may have been better, because I would have hopefully taken heed to listening to my body. It truly never occurred to me that I snacked when I was bored? Or that I ate because it was time to eat??? Or simply that I rarely allowed myself to feel true hunger? I just ate. I am so thrilled to have JUDDD for a WOE. I can't tell you how much it has done for me! I have a friend who has been my bff for quite a while and she is battling with weight loss and is not able to do JUDDD. She tells me that she is hungry all of the time. I explained that we all have "head" hunger, but until you fast and fast for a period of time, you really don't experience true hunger pangs. She really has trouble understanding this and because of her constant hunger, doesn't want to give JUDDD a trial. She can restrict calories, but she can't fast.

Can't get it to work right! But if you click on that link above and it shows just a short clip and then goes to the picture/links, click on the one with the picture of Arte and the other soldier and you will see the whole thing. It's soooooooo funny!
Or, you could Google: Arte Johnson very interesting very stupid you tube. Last edited by Yam-Yam; 07-06-2012 at 11:02 PM.. |

Yam Yam....what a cool story!!! Loved the u-tube. Kept on laughing and DGD even asked why I kept laughing. Stepping that far back in time makes me laugh AND cry. Loved the memory too. Very heartwarming...partly cause I was fortunate to have a wonderful upbringing with loving God-fearing (in a good way) parents.

We were at the Frank Sinatra celebrity golf tournament and got to hang out with some wonderful people. One of my favorites was Andy Williams. I so loved him growing up and I told him that. He was teeing off on the 17th hole and yelled out to everyone that he was hitting that ball for me. Wonderful memories! |

Phyl: So I took pictures of my pictures with my digital camera since I don't own a scanner. Hope these come on ok. I couldn't find the hugging one. I remember taking that out of the album to show someone and guess I never put it back. Who knows where it is!!

When I click on them to get bigger, they look blurry. Sorry. Probably would have turned out better if I had waited and used a scanner instead of taking a picture of a picture!

It was really fun! And the neat thing is, they all seemed just as funny and sweet and kind in person as they are on tv. Can you believe our friend, Arte Johnson, is 83 now? He was born in 1929!!

Thank you for saying that. I'm always telling my hubby that one thing I have always loved about our lives together is that we are either remembering something wonderful we did, doing something wonderful now or planning something wonderful for the future. Makes me![]() happy! One of the things I liked when I first started reading on this forum and considering JUDD is that Pat always said "You are only dieting half the time." Now most DDs have become amazingly easy and even pleasant for me. I have clarity of thought, lots of energy and a peaceful, settled feeling. Every now and then when I do feel that real hunger, I try to make myself think about those who do not have food that day. I've also learned to eat something when my body really needs it. |

thanks for sharing that one! I needed it this morning after the camping binge for the loooong weekend
down day today, I think I am still full from last Thursday. Absolutely certain I was never hungry those four days, but I sure did keep eating. I think popcorn is an addiction as long as it is available. Ditto fresh figs. Last edited by b_lou_who; 07-09-2012 at 07:57 AM.. |

It's a DD. I'm obliged to attend a business dinner this evening so I don't want to use any calories until then if I can help it. BUT RIGHT NOW I WANT TO EAT LEFTOVER PIZZA FROM LAST NIGHT! ![]() Wonder if I would be craving it if there was none there. Darn. Not sure what to do to kill the craving.... Wonderful post as always Yam-Yam. I have lived in India, and I have seen hunger.
