How do you calculate your weight loss/gain for the month?

Do you take your weight from the last of the month & subtract your weight of the 1st of the month (or of JUDDD)?

***Whitlin' just pointed out we should be taking the difference between the 1st & the 1st, not the 1st & the last.
(I think...if I understood correctly!!!)***

Or do you take your highest weight of the month and subtract the lowest weight?

I saw somebody mention that they used a "bounce number" for their calculations...but they had started the month at a lower number...

For example, I started the month at 271, but went up at one point to 273.4, then today am at 269.

So that could be considered a 2lb loss.
If I went from the bounce, it would be 4.4.
But mathematically, I would look at it like as
I gained 2.4 then lost 4.4...+2.4-4.4 still equals 2lb.

And if I went from highest (273.4) to lowest (266.8), it would be 6.6!

I'm not trying to correct anyone's math, just wondering how you're figuring it out.

I've been calculating from my weekly averages...
I'm not sure that's right, either, but it keeps me sane.
Well, perhaps I should say--doesn't make me MORE insane.

Weight First Day of Month minus Weight Last Day of Month.

I would consider all that bouncing in between the natural ebb and flow of my weight as a product of doing JUDDD.

For the calendar purposes of record-keeping for a series of months, I'd say June 1st weight minus July 1st weight equals pounds lost in the month.

But that's an interesting question, Jenny.

For instance (hope she forgives me - I'll owe her one) Alcestis had a nice 2-pound loss with just a few days to go to the end of the month, but hormones showed up and temporarily wiped it out. Now, assuming her hormones won't give her her number back by tomorrow morning, to my mind she can still very honestly tell the world she lost 2 pounds in June. But since Alcestis is likely charting all summer long, her losses will be recorded in other months.

Oh, you're right, Whitlin', to go from the 1st to the 1st!
Because if there were a change between the last day of June and the first day of July, for example, that would get lost in the shuffle when it came time to calculate July's losses.

I've been doing the averages for so long, I forgot about that.
But I made the same mistake at one point, and nothing was adding up right.
I'll have to use the last week of May & the last week of June.

Okay, I'm probably weird, but I go from the first of the month to the lowest weight of the month.

Doing it that way might mean I "lose" the same couple of pounds more than once, but I don't care. I refuse to give back poundage that I have lost, it just doesn't happen to be showing up on the scale the last day of the month. So it's the weight on the first, minus stat weight (which I always change when I lose weight so that it reflects the lowest weight reached.

However, I calculate total pounds lost by top weight minus low weight, so even though I might lose the same pound(s) twice in two successive months, each pound only counts once in the grand total.

That's probably as clear as mud.

I use the last weigh-ins of each month.

I posted this on the June Weigh In thread:

I started JUDDD back in late March and have tracked my daily weight since that time. But up until the first of June, I never participated in this thread. The reason I decided to post to this thread was mainly for an example for new folks, to illustrate what a bouncing ball looks like. I've been successful and want to encourage people.

But I messed up a little bit.

I goofed up in that I did not start off by posting my May 31st weight, my ending weight for May:

5/31 - DD - 198.4
6/1 - UD - 195.2

The first day of June I started off with a whopping 3.2 lb WHOOSH right off the bat.

So. . .

Ending weight 5/31 - 198.4
Ending weight 6/30 - 184.6

I wanted to tell Luna that I do think her method is clear and not at all weird, and now that she shared it I see it makes sense, too.

I still think a straight 1st-day-to-1st-day equals a month.

However, if we consider ourselves in a trend of losing, and are expecting bounces that won't reflect that trend, then the lowest weight of the month is the extent to which we lost during that month. The point for the next month's record-keeping is to build on that trend. That's a perfectly valid way of looking at it.

It's funny, but that's really the way I kept my weight tracker posts all during June, with pounds lost in parenthesis only on new-low days, ignoring the bounces. I just assumed I would "have" to amend my June loss lower if I had a bounce tomorrow from today's MD. Not necessarily, though, if I don't want to count extra pounds in my July tally, when they will only be "make-up" pounds to recover from a bounce.

Very good point, Luna.
