That is a good idea. I couldn't seem to throw it out, but the one taste I took was plain and boy, oh, boy! I'm going to try adding the cinnamon and then adding to FF greek yogurt- maybe some cappella drops or Mio drops will help.

Trader Joe's Tri-color peppers in the frozen section, great to add to a stir fry with broccoli or cabbage shreds. Whole bag 100 calories.

I have a new item to add to my DD grocery list:

Dannon Light and Fit Carb and Sugar Contol
4oz cup of Vanilla Cream flavor= 45 calories, 3 carbs, 0 added sugar, 1.5 grams fat.

I don't count carbs anymore, but I am diabetic so watch sugar when I can.

Carly, I was wondering if you have had any problems with JUDDD with your diabetes. I saw in Dr Johnson's book that he did not recommend following JUDDD if you are diabetic. I am curious about this as I see so many patients day to day that are diabetic. I wanted a background regarding this in case dieting ever comes up in the conversation so I can have some ideas for them. Thanks!

Wow, so many great ideas!

The one thing that I rely on a lot is the 6 oz bags of organic Apple slices that Costco sells. They come in a container which holds probably 12 bags. One bag is 90 calories and seems like a lot. I like to sprinkle cinnamon on them and it makes a great lunch.

Hope you don't mind if I chime in--

I have diabetes type 2, no insulin. I take metformin 750mg 1xday (my rx was for 2xday, but I get side effects at that dose).

I started JUDDD on higher calorie DDs (40-50%), & that helped my BG.

The longer I do JUDDD, the less problems I have with my BG when I fast. I used to feel sick/weak/confused when my BG got below 100...now I find it in the 90s & 80s (even 77 a couple days ago!) and I feel fine!!!

I can fast for about 18 hours (from dinner one day til late lunch the next).
Longer than that is usually very difficult, and very low calorie DDs are difficult, too. I still eat at least 800 calories on DDs (30-35%).

Another way I sometimes do DDs is not to worry about calories so much, but do a very low carb day. Either a fat fast, or mostly eggs and salad greens (some meat if I get sick of eggs).

I started doing "MUDDD" again about 2 weeks ago, and my BG has been EXACTLY 115 every single morning for several days.* That's a decent reading for me. It goes up & down a lot when I do "regular" JUDDD.

*As long as I eat sensibly when it comes to carbs. Last 2 nights I had Chinese food and BG was about 140 & 130 in the am).

I don't know a lot about insulin, but if someone is taking it, is it better if they eat about the same food/carbs every day so they don't have to adjust it too much day-to-day? That could be difficult with JUDDD.

Fast 5 might be another option for diabetics. Not great for losing weight for me, but pretty easy and still get the health benefits.

What is your profession?

Thanks for your insight Jenny on DM. I am a respiratory therapist. I see many overweight patients that need to use a CPAP machine for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and many of those patients in our demographic area seem to be diabetic and have kidney disease, etc, as well. Always trying to learn new info for my patients, you never know what they are going to ask simply because I am in the health profession.

Also, what is MUDDD? Thanks.

It's a 24 hour schedule, using JUDDD calories.

Regular JUDDD: eat UD cals one day, sleep, DD, then sleep again before the next UD; this makes the DD about 30-36 hours long.

MUDDD: eat UD/DD calories in a 24 hour period; from 6pm-6pm, for example.
Or think of it in terms of meals; my Up Day is usually lunch, dinner, (next day) breakfast. Then DD will be lunch, dinner, (next day) breakfast.
It could also go dinner, (next day) breakfast, lunch.

This could be a bit difficult to explain to a person who isn't familiar with JUDDD.
But the original mouse studies that Dr J based JUDDD on used a 24-hr feeding/24-hr fasting schedule.

It has helped my diabetes tremendously. I'm no longer taking my Byetta injection and for that matter I'm not currently taking and diabetic medication. My A1C was down to 6.5 and my cholesterol was down to 139. My BP was 117/70 at my last check up.

Like PJ, I had a hard time in the beginning on DDs, but now I fast for about 20hours on some DDs and I mean fast. Sometimes I don't even have coffee. I feel better on DDs than UDs sometimes. I could not do this when I was on medication that was lowering my BG. I'm not the best about checking my sugar, but at my last MD appointment my finger stick was 95. It was a DD, but I had eaten some celery, cucumbers, etc. It still goes up to 140 or 150 after a sensible meal. I may have to take something again, but not an injection (I hope!)

Progresso Light Chicken Pot Pie soup is my new favorite- I add an individual serving of diced cooked carrots or green beans... whole can + carrots/gr beans is 210 calories. It's enough to eat in 2 or 3 sittings.

For supper I eat 2 slices of 98% FF bologna with lotsa veggies... pickles, peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. and mustard on 35 or 40 calorie bread.

Sometimes I have a few Special K chips or HEB's Garlic Pita Poppers chips or popcorn.

Also there is a new cracker/ popped chip thingy out called "Kim's Magic Pop". They're each as big as a tortilla around and thicker but incredibly light and airy... and only 15 calories each! I eat them plain when I just have to take the edge off or go mad. They're working on flavors too. All my kids like them!

Well, I wasn't going to buy special foods for this WOE but took a browse through here before shopping today and did scour the supermarket for some frankenfoods to see if it would make DD easier. Since I normally start with whole foods and cook from scratch, I am a little concerned with the sodium content of these packaged items, but turning a blind eye for now.

Have packaged organic broth
miracle noodles (found spinach flavor - hope they are good)
assorted low cal crackers
laughing cow wedges
a couple low cal canned soups
anchovy paste
low cal bread
in addition to the usual veggies

I've noticed that many of the long-time JUDDDers no longer need these lists, and don't seem to eat these things anymore... I think it helps tremendously in the beginning when DD panic is new. I no longer panic if I don't have much in the fridge or pantry for DD, because let's face it, +-400 calories only go so far. As long as I have pickles, deli meat and chicken broth I'm okay. I am going to look for some of the things in this thread, however, just to make DD's more interesting.
