How do you make it through the weekends?

And I count Friday 5 PM through Sunday evening as the weekend.

I have been off JUDDD for quite a while but am thinking of restarting (again). I actually saw some success for the few months I stuck to it but that was a year ago last winter.

The hard part for me is weekends. I find them such a drag on JUDDD! They're not too bad in the winter because it's usually so cold that I don't want to leave the house but in the summer we eat out a lot on the weekends. It's one thing we really like to do. We sometimes eat a meal out every day (for sure on Friday night and usually at least one other time Sat or Sun).

Any ideas how to make this work without feeling like I'm totally depriving myself? Telling myself "I can eat tomorrow" just doesn't work for me on these days.

We do the same. Every weekend we are away and eating out. What I have been doing on weekend DD is fasting until dinner then eating lightly - salad for appetizer, no dressing and protein and veggie for dinner. No wine and just a bite of DH's desert. Luckily I only have to be that good for one night and I can indulge on the other.

Well, I'm different from most here it seems, Jiggles, because I schedule a MD on the weekend and keep MWF as my constant DDs. Not as many people on this forum are doing the weekly schedule as used to back when I started. But it has worked for me for several years. I stayed on maintenance since late 2009, but recently life events (eldercare, with hospitalization, declining health, having to come live with me) turned my life upside down and I gained it back. I'm fixing that now.

Right now I'm trying MD on Saturday so that the progression will be DD, MD, UD, DD. I didn't see any ill effects when MD was on Sunday, but in theory always having an UD preceding a DD would insure you are fully fueled for it. An MD is the average of calories for your UD and DD.

Hope you get lots of ideas for your weekends and try JUDDD again. It's the greatest!

DDs Mon & Wed, fast* all day Friday but eat "normal" dinner (around 6-8pm) if something special comes up**, same on Sat (but might be 2pm--bbq, birthday, etc), on Sunday I usually have big brunch, no lunch, light but nutritious dinner (lots of protein).

I use the Fast 5 plan almost every day in conjunction with JUDDD, but I find it especially helpful on weekends & holidays to stay in control.

*I might have some light cream in coffee or chicken broth, or eat a little jerky.

**If nothing comes up, then normal DD on Friday.

Or just decide that on the weekend DDs (Friday starting later in the day only!) - you'll eat 40-45% of your UD cals - just keep in mind, it may slow your weight loss - but not really if you're already blowing the weekend!!

For me DD's on the weekends are easier. During the week I get u at 4:45 a.m. so sleeping in even until 8:00 on the weekend, heck that is several hours that I don't know I am hungry or am not eating. Then I usually fast till lunch. Last Sunday I left the house at 8:00 a.m., got home at 7:00 p.m. I ate a salad with grilled shrimp at lunch and it was very filling. When I got home, I ate a protein granola bar! I know everyone is different, but I enjoy DD's on the weekend. During the week I have to eat something to keep my ability to focus at work and not get all irritable or short with everyone.

I throw in the 35% day instead of a 20% and it is working. In fact, I am doing this pretty much until after the 4th to help me with all of my family activities.

At 35%, I can have 700 cal on DD and that is enough to go out to eat.

I just keep on with the DD/UD rotation and it all works out. My world doesn't revolve around food (then how did I gain weight you say?) so I can attend events and either nibble or just drink fluids and I am fine.
I am sensitive to a lot of food chemicals (such as MSG, nitrates, nitrites etc) so I really prefer preparing my own food so I don't blow up like road kill the next day anyway. Used to love to eat out but now I don't. Would rather fast and wait until I get home versus going to a restaurant when out for the day. Just me.

I think you should keep your calories and rotations, as written, for the first month, before deciding if you need to tweak the weekends or not. Some people add a MD and do fine, but more people don't do as well with it.

This is coming from someone who fully intended to do a MD once a week so I could keep my schedule the same every week. I did one weekend with a regular rotation and realized a weekend DD was no different from a weekday DD, for me at least. I have used only one MD in the last six months. If something comes up, I do like others and just fast as much as possible, then eat sensibly at the event. I've been to birthday parties, buffets, all manner of events, and been able to stick to my DD calories.

It takes 2 weeks or more for the sirtuins to build up in your system. If you start messing with the calories or rotations before they're built up, it could take much longer to become fully saturated. And we LOVE those beautiful little sirtuins which give us such wonderful appetite suppression and health benefits!

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm going to re-read the book this weekend and try figure out a good game plan to try.

I thought the book said to make sure to stick to the rotation for the first 2 weeks, not a whole month? But it's been a long time since I read it so maybe I'm not remembering it correctly.

I'm sure a month would be a good thing to do but I know myself and right now I know I wouldn't be able to stick to the strict DD/UD rotation perfectly for a full month during the summer. 2 weeks, yes. But I'm thinking that whatever I decide to do will be better than what I've currently been doing, which is eating whatever/whenever I want and slowly gaining weight. But thank you for the input.

I'm pretty sure the book says 2 weeks, but the 1-month thing is what some people have found works best for them personally.

Pretty much any type of IF will eventually turn on those SIRTs...it may just take longer. The longer "fasting" of the DDs helps to turn it on pretty quickly.

I agree that it's better to do a less-strict version of an eating plan than to do nothing at all! One may not see the 20lb-a-month losses than some do, but losing even just 1/2lb a month is certainly better than gaining 5!!!

MOSTLY, I do MWF down days unless an event means I need to change rotation, but I always get in at least three good down days a week. That just works well for me with my job and family commitments. Lots of Fridays I end up fasting, they don't really matter to me as part of the weekend. Sat breakfast is another thing though!
Usually weekend is an up and a medium, camping season is messing with me but I'm doing not too horribly. I own my intermittent fasting, I eat clean and organic, making the wisest choices I can because LIFE keeps happening to me. Fortunately, summer is much easier to eat light and fresh with local produce in season.
My current crazy rotation example:
last week we were camping for four days
M-DD
T-MD
W-DD
TH-PMS UD
F-PMS UD
S-MD pms hunger abated and it wasn't horrible
S-MD
this week
M-DD
T-Fast
W-UD
TH-DD
F-UD event
S-goal is MD, may be UD though with cocktails
Sun-DD may fast

I try to keep the Star Wars Jedi Master philosophy always in mind:

“Do or Do Not, there is No Try.”

JUDDD is a powerful tool for weight loss, however you have to want to do it. It is magic, but it is not a miracle. We're all still hoping for a miracle weight-loss cure, until then an easy way to lose weight is JUDDD.

Wishing you the best!

Noweigh you can't expect to tweak Juddd to death and reap the benefits as you would if you played by the rules. But as others have said, better to lose a little, even nothing rather than gain.

Oh yes, I fully understand that if I'm not following JUDDD exactly as written I may see slow results. But it's a start and like others have said, better than gaining.

I am losing at 35% every day, so I think you will do fine on the weekends. Keep your rotations and do your DD at 40% if needed and you will still have Sirt-1 working just as Dr. J promises! Best wishes on your JUDDD!

Thanks Sunday.

I was just looking at the calculator again on the website and realized that I forgot about being able to count your exercise. I never count my workous in order to add more calories (and I don't usually work out on the weekends) but that would be a way to allow me some extra calories on the weekend.

Good idea Jiggles. This has been my first week but I really like M W F as my down days now this week DD will be S T T S. I really like Sat as my UD!

This week I'll keep to it as it's written and maybe make next Saturday a MD? Just thinking that next Saturday will be almost the end of induction for me so maybe won't be too bad a result?

Have a good weekend

The absolutely best way to handle this dilemma is to convert all of your family and friends to JUDDD - and coordinate your rotations.

Failing that , just remember not to have three DDs or three UDs in a row. Either pattern can undo all of the good you do during the week. I am re-reading the book right now. I think that is an excellent idea for you. I believe there is a pattern that will work for you. It may take some experimenting to find it, but it is out there!

I sure try to keep to rotation; then life kicks in. All of my weekends until mid-July are involved around helping my son and his family move back to TX, which means either eating out, or having my DIL fix food -- great cook. But my DD goes out the window. SO, I've decided to do my rotation during the week, have an UD on Saturday, a FD on Sunday, and carry on. I'm avoiding the scales and hoping to maintain until I get back on full rotation. I've been doing this for the last few weeks and my smaller pants still fit, so I'm not going to worry at this point. I did avoid the birthday cake and donuts at work yesterday and only had 350 calories for the day so all is well.

I am trying to get DH to join me in JUDDD - he's overweight, and if you saw him you would think "needs to drop 20 pounds," but if you knew his family history, you'd think he had a death wish.

He is SO food-oriented. I was hoping that the idea of having his UD's would appeal to him enough to try.

If I can make this suggestion again--for your guys who are reluctant to skip meals, try to get them to take l-glutamine for a week (on their regular diet). Then see if they are feeling less hungry.

This has made all the difference for me lately!
I take 5g, 4x/day.
I got my neighbor taking it...she is loosely doing JUDDD with me `(can't eat her UD calories, lol), has lost 4lbs in a couple weeks, and can button some pants that used to be too tight.

I too get anxious about skipping meals, because I am diabetic and "being hungry" for me can mean being shaky, grumpy, and irrational, not just having discomfort in my stomach!

Also, maybe your guys could build up slowly to DDs--
eat a half-sized breakfast every other day for a week.
then have them reduce their lunch, as well, for a week.
then the same for dinner.

Now they will be at 50% DDs, which might be enough for them to lose!
Or, knowing GUYS, they will probably have lost 70lbs already!

A male neighbor of mine many years ago lost quite a lot of weight by ONLY reducing his lunch on workdays. He would buy a sub every day...he started buying 1/2 a sub and said that it was still so much food, he felt ridiculous that he used to eat a big one every day!

I have a bottle of that. I need to remember to take it! But mine says to take with a meal. Well, if I'm not eating much on a DD that would be a problem. And I'm scared to take it without eating because I have gotten nasty stomach cramps from taking vitamins on an empty stomach before.

I'm starting JUDDD again today (loosely this week) with a DD. I say loosely because we're going to my parents' cabin this weekend and my mom is a fabulous cook (and food pusher). I know I will not be doing a DD while there. So, I'm going for 2 good DDs today & Wed. and a partial DD on Friday. Right now I'm just looking to make the gain (that I KNOW I will have over the weekend) not as big of a hit.

Sounds like a good plan. My DH has finally joined with me but it was only after seeing his formerly "can't drop a pound even if I starve" wife drop weight rapidly. Men get to eat a lot more calories so my husband never really has to skip a meal. In fact he had about 600 calories left over on his down day and threatened to go get a footlong subway for dinner (my favorite fastfood). I think my dirty look made him change his mind

L-glutamine is an amino acid, therefore it may not hurt your stomach like a vitamin.
I usually take it on an empty stomach--I put it in my water bottle and drink it all day long!

Barb--I don't know what to say about its appetite-suppressing effects other than it suppresses my appetite!!!

I started taking it because it's supposed to help reverse insulin resistance.
Insulin resistant liver & muscle + insulin sensitive adipocyte (fat cells) = easy weight gain, slow weight loss
Insulin sensitive liver & muscle + insulin resistant adipocyte = lean liver & muscle, fat cells can't store fat.

Anyhoo...amino acids are often taken by weightlifters, so hubbies might not mind taking it!!! Rather than some girly-sounding thing like raspberry keytones!!!

I started researching this after seeing your original post and it is also known to heal "leaky gut syndrome". I do see that it is recommended to drink plenty of water with l-glutamine. Athletes swear by it for muscle recovery. I use the NOW brand because it is so cheap. I forget to take and do not take regularly, but when I do weights, I try to always take one.
