A Couple Questions about Coconut Oil
 
Just got mine, came UPS, it is in a jar and says refrigerate after opening. When I opened the jar it was more like face cream in texture, so I stirred it up and used it in my coffee and cearal, I left it on the cupboard then but it was as thin as water then, then I put it in the frig and it is so very hard, had to use a knife to scrap some out! What should I do with it?

Also, I read that it was good for eggs, is this scrambled eggs? Also, anyone use it on their face!

It liquifies at 76 degrees, IIRC (I might be wrong), so it can be somewhat of a trick to know where to keep it. I don't store mine in the fridge, though, because as you discovered, it's a real pain to dig out. I just keep mine in a kitchen cupboard.

I use it on my face and body AND use it for cooking occasionally. I love it for my face and body, very moisturizing and you only need a little bit.

I like to pop popcorn in it. :heart:

I've used it for frying eggs and scrambled eggs, too, but usually cook eggs in bacon grease, so my experience is limited.

I have a couple of kinds and neither says to refrigerate. Does yours have any other ingredients, or just coconut oil? If it's just oil, there's no need to refrigerate. It becomes liquid at 76 degrees F, I believe. Mine changes from day to day, depending on how warm my kitchen gets, and it's fine.

Lots of people use it on their skin. I haven't tried it yet, as I'm acne prone and too afraid to put straight oil on my face.

I've never had any that suggested refrigeration, either. It should have been processed very little. Words that are good to find on the label are "organic" or "virgin" or "cold pressed" or "unrefined". Face cream texture is fine. Scrambled eggs, yes, it's great for that. I make an omelet and use it. My husband fries all kinds of things in it - potatoes to burgers to salmon. I use it half-and-half with butter when I enjoy butter on sweet potatoes or other veggies, or spreading on a muffin.

it cannot go rancid (which is part of the fabulous benefit of coconut oil) so I cannot fathom why yours says refrigerate. I never have. Mine is a solid unless the house or rv are too hot for me. I just scrape some out with a clean utensil and don't introduce any foreign food matter into the jar (no double dipping if I need more as I cook). It works for any kind of cooked egg, makes the fluffiest scrambled eggs/omelets, and is perfect for greasing any pan. Makes the very best stove top popcorn - perfectly crisp- in my cast iron dutch oven. I also use it exclusively for seasoning my cast iron inside and out. No rancid nastiness after storage. Nice as a moisturizer. Also my mom used it on her hand after surgery and it was very helpful in the healing process.

I love cooking chicken in it. Or doing a veggie stir fry. It gives it just that mild Hawaiin flavor.

It seems odd to me that yours says to refrigerate after opening.

I buy Nutiva Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed Coconut Oil. You can get it from Netrition. I got mine from Amazon. I just keep the opened jar right on my counter top. I like having a cup of hot chocolate made with SF, FF Nestlie's hot chocolate mix and one teaspoon of mocha capucinno mix (also SF, FF) and I stir in anywhere from one to three teaspoons of coconut oil. It's so yummy.

Since coconut oil is a thermogenic, it has a tendency to kill the appetite and also speed up the metabolism. So, if you eat a teaspoon or so of it, you might feel warm, pretty energetic and not hungry!

I saw a woman from India with beautiful, shiny, long, dark hair demonstrate how women from her country use coconut oil on their hair. They melt it, rub it in to their hair in liquid form, massaging it into the scalp and especially into the ends of the hair. Then they wrap it and sleep with it that way. In the morning they shampoo it out and their hair is so lovely and conditioned and healthy.

One of my friends applies it to her skin, lets it soak in and then takes a shower.

It's great on my elbows and the heals of my feet and also my hands and cuticles.

The brand I have is from Puritan Pride, it is organic and extra virgin too. On the label under warnings is the info about refrigeration.

It will also cure athlete's foot if applied over a period of days. The ONLY thing that cleared DS' even after prescription medicine failed.
I buy coconut oil by the quart for the house and by the 5 gallon bucket for making soap so I have plenty of coconut oil on hand at all times. The expeller pressed EVCO is what works on athlete's foot. It is a natural fungicide.

I have never seen a coconut oil that said it had to be refrigerated. That is curious. I have been "eating" coconut oil since 2001. Love it!!

I love EVCO. Aside from cooking purposes and making coconut oil bark with it, I'd been using it before that even to remove makeup (it's fantastic for removing eye makeup and way better than anything store bought--even high-end brands), and as a moisturizer for face and skin. More recently I've been taking 1T of it every morning for all the health benefits, and I don't know if it's had any noticeable effect on weight loss or digestion or metabolism, but it does taste good.

Hmmm....I'be been buying my Coconut Oil from Puritan's Pride for years, but mine doesn't say to refrigerate. I know they carry more than one kind, though. I note that mine doesn't say "organic", just "virgin" so it's probably a different one from yours. I store mine in the panty, and my kitchen can be very hot, or very cold. I've never had any issues with the flavor or rancidity. I wouldn't worry one bit about keeping it out.

But yes, coconut oil should not require refrigeration. Mine is mostly solid in the winter and a creamy liquid in the fall/spring, and in the summer it swings back and forth between solid to liquid depending on how much time I spend at home with the a/c on and how much time I'm away with the a/c off. It's a bit frustrating because I really just like it to be that creamy liquid all the time.

Dawn there is something called fractionated coconut oil. It's a complicated process that they do to it. But I make a beautiful facial oil with it. It is completely noncomedogenic and will not aggravate your skin or clog pores. It keeps my skin very moist and soft although I mix it with about twenty other ingredients lol. But I keep a gallon in the house. It's not for internal use however. You can easily find it online.

Hey I was wondering if anyone can answer my question also - dont want to make a thread just for it - I just bought " Louanna Coconut Oil" from Walmart - it was in the baking oil. Is this ok to use?

I only use LouAnna for cooking. I use the EVCO for coconut bark. Louanna is not expeller processed. I guess you would call it refined. Not sure how it is made but it is not the "high class" coconut oil like Tropical traditions. In my opinion anyway.

How do I know which CO to use for which function. OK Louanna for cooking but EVCO for coconut bark but what about other recipes? I've been looking thru the CO recipes thread and not all recipes specify if the CO should be EV or if reg is ok. Also can the EVCO be used for cooking AND all other recipes? Whats the difference between the two.

TIA for any help!

I only buy and use EVCO (cold pressed) for everything. It's great for cooking. Great to just eat off a spoon or stir in my hot chocolate. It's great as a moisturizer or to put on a boo-boo for healing.

By the way: I read that you should not microwave it. If it's solid and you want to melt it, do it in a pan on the stove. The microwaves destroy some important nutritional element.

Thank you I think I will just take the Louanna back and get the EVCO. I look forward to trying this!! I've been copying a bunch of CO recipes all night..I REALLY am hoping the coconut bark turns out b/c I have not have any chocolate in a LONG time and my sweet tooth can get pretty bad.

The bark is FABULOUS. Takes minutes to make, and it's a blast to be able to tweak the recipe to your own tastes - a bit more heat, a bit less coffee, etc. My lovely man, who is not a JUDDDer, eats lots of it every single day. It's 6:30 am here and he just asked me if I'm making any today. :)

OH no!! Do NOT do that!! I once made a recipe with the virgin coconut oil and I could not stand the taste of it! Had to throw the entire batch of brownies I had just made away as no one would eat it. The Louana is great for cooking because you cannot tell the coconut taste is in it--I do NOT like coconutty eggs. I don't know about you, but ick! I use the virgin for my skin care and by the spoon when I have it, but I use the Louana type for ALL my frying/baking/cooking. You do not have to return that Louana. I suggest you at least try it.

I don't use the EVCO for cooking because of the expense. I use a quart of LouAnna every other week for cooking our breakfast. If I run out of LouAnna I use the Tropical Traditions for my morning eggs but otherwise it is LouAnna in the skillet. I have to get my EVCO online since I have not found it anywhere near me. (rural). I wait for a two for one sale and then buy 4 quarts which will last me a long time.

I also use the EVCO for any recipe I might use but then I don't make many of the pretend bread type products if any. Trying to have just a whole foods type diet eventually.

Been using LouAnna for cooking for at least 8 years with no ill effects.

OH ok so the Louanna oil you can NOT taste the coconut but the EVCO you can?

OK well I took my first CO step and made my eggs in it this morning. Only used mayyyybe 1/2 teaspoon . I could not taste anything different. It did not enchance nor take away from the taste. Should I have tasted something??

I also used it to my my daughters eggs who is VERY anti healthy anything..hee hee

Louana does NOT have the taste of coconut. You should not be tasting anything, so that is good! This is how I get coconut oil in my family's diet. If I tell them it has coconut oil in it, they quit eating it. What they don't know won't hurt them, in fact it will benefit them ;)

Lol, I just now got back to this thread and see I made a funny goof! :hyst:

I use the LouAna coconut oil for cooking, also. I believe it's much healthier than canola or vegetable oils.
