Dr. Mercola & JUDDD WOE

L@@K at what Dr. Mercola has to say today about the JUDDD style WOE:

WOW! L@@K at this article -- Dr. Mercola embraces the JUDDD-style WOE. And I quote: Could fasting for two days a week prevent age-related brain shrinkage, heart disease, diabetes, and possibly even cancer? New research suggests that fasting triggers a variety of health-promoting hormonal and metabolic changes. Fasting - quantified as consuming somewhere between 500 and 800 calories in a day - has been shown to reduce:

Growth factor - a hormone linked with cancer and diabetes
"Bad" LDL cholesterol
Cholesterol
Inflammation levels
Overall, it also helps lessen damage from free radicals (dangerous molecules
that cause damage in your body).

Furthermore, according to the featured article in the Daily Maili:

"Suddenly dropping your food intake dramatically... triggers protective
processes in the brain... similar to the beneficial effect you get from
exercise. This could help protect the brain against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's."

Google: mercola Can Fasting for Two Days Each Week Help Prevent Dementia?

Pretty cool. -- Susan

Thanks CharlotteChick! I found the article very interesting. Especially towards the end where he talks about upping fats and proteins and lowering carbs. It just so happens that I am experimenting with this. I just started this week so I wasn't going to mention it until I had done it 2 weeks or so. I want to make sure everyone knows I am in maintenence before I go on. I had stopped tracking calories for the most part on UDs but I know it was ALOT! Mostly from carbs. I kept my wt the same but the bounce between UDs and DDs was huge. As much as 8-10 lbs. And I was starting to feel 'puffy' even though I wasn't gaining. So this week I decided to eat lower carb foods. Mostly fats. Yesterday I ate just under 4000 cal with 72% fat, 4% carb, 24% protein. This morning I weighed what I usually weigh after a dd. I know, probably water wt. I guess I'm just experimenting to see what will happen if I only change WHAT I eat, not calories or rotation. I'll let you know how it goes.

I am also curious about coconut oil and helping with thyroid function. It's the first time I've heard of that. My dr just lowered my meds a little. Has anyone else with thyroid issues heard of this?

Dr Andrew Weil is on board, too!
I'm more a fan of Dr Mercola,
but I think Dr Weil reaches a lot of people.

I`ve been doing a lot of research lately on the benefits of fasting and a few different articles suggest that if you combine fasting with low carb : " you`ll become a fat burning machine". I thought that was a great way to put it, and that`s exactly how I feel right now.

Thanks for posting this. I have Alzheimer's in the family, so I hope that doing JUDDD and drinking copious amounts of coffee, helps me ward that off! We should have a thread with links to all the supportive literature out there!

Also the June 6 Mercola newsletter (I quoted it yesterday in stargazer's "Six Weeks to OMG" thread) had some very similar thoughts. That was the newsletter about inflammation and Dr. Ron Rosedale. It mentioned skipping breakfast, and gave 4 or 5 potential health benefits.

In the quotes Susan gave us, I was fascinated to read:
Fasting - quantified as consuming somewhere between 500 and 800 calories in a day -
Am I the only one who really hasn't heard this stated in that way? I've read a lot about Intermittent Calorie Restriction and Intermittent Fasting being considered two different things... ...

Editing to say, jodeeras I like your new photo!

I have never read anything that allowed 500 - 800 cals and called the woe 'fasting'. Research time.

Fascinating article. I have spent over 10 years watching my mother dissolve into dementia. I am very motivated to find ways to avoid following her down that long, sad path.

Thanks for posting about the Mercola article. I take his newsletter off and on, but happen to be getting it right now. It's nice to have things like this to share with other people who are interested, but don't understand the health benefits of this WOE.

Mercola puts a LCHF spin on it but Dr Johnson found that it worked w/o. Still I am happy to see more support.

I, too, see fasting as not consuming calories and IFers tend to consume coffee w cream and call it fasting just 'cause they're not chewing.

I guess some of us would rather drink our cals than eat them.

I am happy to see the range of 500-800 cals since I no longer do well w complete fasting.....and yes, I would rather eat my cals.

Delurking and fascinated about JUDDD and IF.

gotsomeold, a plan that comes to mind is Medifast (one meal of meat and veggies and 5 protein shakes).

Hey Zay! Welcome out of lurking mode. I am doing alright on JUDDD. At least one DD a week I stay at or under 100 cals. This thread has me thinking about advancing that to at least two days/week. I can't do protein shakes...my tummy rejects them in a way that is great for losing weight but messy.
