Mayonnaise Calories

I always make my mayo at home and never did I bother to measure the oil. I used to pour the oil (probably a cup or more). Now that I am on JUDD, I have decided to measure it and the mayo turned out to have 1780 cal It is only a cup of mayo. So have decided to add some yogurt to the mayo when it was done. I made an egg salad and turned out pretty good with half yogurt and half mayo. I think next time I will use dripped (greek) yogurt. Anyway I thought I would mentioned the yogurt trick if you want to lower the calories.

Brilliant plan. I loathe 'low fat' mayo and dressings but by doing what you suggest to Mayo, and adding vinegar or lemon juice to salad dressings I do just fine.

Years ago I read how, if you have dry leaves in a wooden bowl, you just need to take a clove of garlic and some salt and rub it around the bowl, add your dry(ish) leaves, then no more than a teaspoon of good olive oil and toss gently with your hands. Each leaf will be lightly coated with oil. Then add your other salad ingredients, black pepper and either vinegar or lemon juice. Hey Presto, a perfectly dress salad for 1 tsp olive oil.

Cindy- That's sounds yummy. I know when you mix garlic with salt it makes a nice paste. I will have to try it next time as I love garlic. Thanks for the tip

Greek yogurt is a good mayo substitute/stretcher.

I haven't mixed it directly into my jar of mayo,
but I use it when I make chicken, tuna, or potato salad...
put in a good bit of yogurt, then add a spoonful or two of mayo for flavor.
Sour cream sometimes works well, too. A bit less sour than yogurt.

I've discovered that in many cases where I would typically over-use mayo, salad dressing, or olive oil, a tablespoon of light cream (30 calories) will thin it down (while moistening my lettuce or chicken nicely) and allow me to use much less dressing, etc. I also add a splash of red wine vinegar or lemon juice and toss/mix well before adding dressing.
