Need suggestions for maintaining while on vacation

I have been following all of you for about a week now. I am in my first week of JUDDD and have yet to weigh myself. I too am a former LCer who stalled about 10 pounds short of goal...same old story. I am going on a cruise a month from today, and hope to at least maintain my weight. Any suggestions re how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Currently, my UD is 1525 and my DD is 500. I am 51 years old; menopausal; 5'6". I gained 20 pounds with menopause despite following an extremely LC diet. I hope I've given you enough information. I must say how impressed I am with all of you and the friendship you show toward one another. Thanks so much for all of your posts. You are truly an inspiration !!!!

Many people here have had great cruises, and stuck pretty closely to their rotations. That is what I would recommend certainly.

But look at this thread and if you need to use some of the suggestions there you could almost certainly maintain.

I believe I had an epiphany...my longest post ever.

Oh, and why don't you join int our June Newbie thread too?

Hey, hope you have a great cruise. I don't do JUDDD on cruises, but I cruise often enough that the food is not a huge temptation for me.

Funny; I was kind of in your situation before my Christmas cruise. I noticed I was gaining, so I started JUDDD one week before Christmas. Abandoned JUDDD during the cruise and came right back to it when I got home. By time for my May cruise, I had lost all I wanted to lose.

You will do fine, but I am not great at telling you how to make it on a DD. I just make sure none of my days are too far up, and I really don't gain more than a pound or two in the course of a week.

Where/when/what cruise line, what port you are sailing from? If there's anything more I can tell you, I will. Is this your first cruise?

On another JUDDD thread, a member went on a 3 wk vacation and used the rule of DD's <1000 and UD's about 1000 cal above that.

Worked great!!

In the book Dr Johnson has a pt who ate more, maybe up to 900 cal ( can't remember exactly) on DD's and still lost.

IMHO, best to keep some sort of rotation.

Kissa, thanks for recommending that thread. It was very helpful. I did join the June Newbie thread. I finally got the guts to weigh myself, and after 2 DD's I've lost 3.4 lb. !!!

The cruise is a celebration of my daughter's high school graduation, so we're taking a Carnival cruise to the Southern Caribbean. We leave from Puerto Rico and go to Barbados, St. Johns, St. Lucia, St. Kits, St. Maartens. This is my second cruise. I was a bit worried that Carnival wouldn't be as good as Royal Caribbean, but I've read a lot of reviews regarding this cruise and most of them are very positive. I think I will take your advise and have a lot of MD while on the cruise and do my best to not gain more than a pound or two.

Thanks, jem51. I may take that advice. I was thinking of using all MD of around 1200-1500, but maybe a rotation like you suggest would work better to fend off the weight. I really appreciate your advice !!!

I'm just back from spending a few days in a departure city then cruising. I went on maintenance levels (about 800 calories on DD, 1500 on UD) the first nine days. The last five days were, by conscious decision) pure UUADs (up-up-and-away days). I gained three pounds. Two good DDs later I was down almost a pound from where I was when the adventure began.

Love those sirtuin enzymes that tell my body to burn-burn-burn.

I think the greatest concern for you is - there is not a lot of time to let the sirtuin enzymes accumulate before your adventure begins. I encourage you to stick to the rotation and your calculated calories very closely in the intervening time. The more your body has adjusted to JUDDD before before you sail, the better.

I did not "lose" weight. I evicted it. It is gone and it ain't coming back!

JUDDD cares about calories. JUDDD does not care what you eat. Your body probably does.

I notice that you mention the sirtuin enzymes quite a bit in your posts. Do you have a reference article, etc, from the internet that I may be able to read to understand this WOE a bit more? Yes I am a bit of a geek.

Barb - This is explained in the book - The Alternate Day Diet by Dr. Johnson. It is cheap and I bought mine on half.com.

Hey Barb! Back when Dr J wrote the book SiRT1 was the only enzyme that had been found. Since then a whole passel have been discovered and many, maybe even all, of them play into health, weight, and aging. So, I reference the group name, sirtuin.

I can't point you at a specific article. It has been a few months since I did my research, and a lot of new info is popping up all the time.

If you run internet searches, you will be amazed. Try searching on 'sirtuin enzymes caloric restriction' and 'sirtuin enzymes fasting' as a place to start. Then go wandering as articles catch your attention. (You can start by searching on just 'sirtuin enzymes' but that I decided that covers so much it was best to start at a more specific level.)

Happy reading/researching.

Oh KelAly! I did think of one other, possible way to handle eating on vacation.

Run a search on Fast-5. That is fasting during most of the 24 hour day, and only eating reasonably but with some freedom during five consecutive hours.

Yam-Yam is doing it with great success during her extended travels. But it may not jive with your life-style/metabolism.

Thanks so much for your advice, Nancy. I will definitely look into Fast 5 as a possibility. I figure I can use the travel days as DD to start. Then, I only need to come up with two other DD's. It's great to know that many have good luck getting their weight back down shortly after returning home and getting back to their normal rotation. I love all of this advice !!!!

Here is a good link:

What is SIRT1?

Surf around that site and you will find some fascinating videos by research scientists.

You can definitely learn all you need to know about the SIR (Silent Information Regulators) such as SIRT1 and SIRT2. There are tons of studies going on right now and more and more proof that activating these genes (which product the sirtuin enzymes/proteins) through calorie restriction and IF can burn fat, prevent extra calories from being stored as fat, lengthening life and reversing aging.

Just Google "What does SIRT1 gene do??" and you will have plenty of reading to keep a geek happy for many hours! There are several "information junkies" here and I'm certainly one of them!

My local library will do an inter-library loan if they don't have the book I want. I've done that lots of times.
