Me @ Dinner 2night in D.C.

DH and I had a romantic dinner tonight at the Flagship, a restaurant on the Potomac very near where we first met and probably the first restaurant we ever had a meal together at 39+ years ago!!!

It was wonderful. We dined outdoors on the water in the harbor and had all the crab legs and sea food we could eat. Plus a bottle of CA Merlot. Gotta love it! Miss you all. Will be back more to catch up next week some time and I'll pop in whenever I get a minute. Keeping busy!

I'm doing a "Fast-5" type plan so far every day. Staying the same weight so far. Fingers crossed not to gain next week in PA with the Fam!!!

Oh! The new Avi is me at diinner tonight by the harbor.

I loved the Flagship 50 years ago! Especially.. RUM BUNS! Do they still have those?

I worked in D.C. at the Navy Department for the years I was there, living in Arlington and then in Silver Spring.

That was a fun city to by a young woman in back in the 60's...

Glad you had a nice romantic dinner with your beloved. Have fun next week with family too.

Funny you should mention the rum buns!!! We were telling our young server about them. I asked her why they do not serve them any more?? She said when she got the job there, her Mom said, "Do they still have Rum Buns??" And she asked her, "what the heck is that??"

Hope no one is reading this on a DD!! I told her they were kind of like Cinnabuns, thow softer and yummier, but they were soaked in rum!!!

OMGosh!! I worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (in REA to be specific and I'm sure you remember what that was. Such a wonderful program and I was in the Telephone end).

If it was someone's birthday, or retirement, or anniversary, or someone got a promotion, or, or, it stopped raining, or, or..... our whole office staff would walk on over to the Flagship and have a long lunch.

My boss would buy me a Brandy Alexander and we would all have a merry long lunch topped off with the awesome rum buns. I did not usually type any formal documents when I got back to REA on those afternoons!!! (We were not permitted to use White Out. All docs had to be perfect!! 100%).

P.S. I did do lots of filing and "Xeroxing" which needed to be done. So, no waste of tax payer's dollars. We worked hard. And long. But the Flagship is part of awesome memories for me.....it opened in 1956. My time there was 1972-73 and it was wonderful!

Was gonna say something else but can't remember...... give me a minute

OK, remembered! Pat: the server said she is sure that if enough customers talked to the new management and told them we miss rum buns, they would bring them back!!

LOLOL That sounds like so much fun. And that Washington hadn't changed in the ensuing years from my time there to yours.

Bringing back memories of some awfully fun luncheons! I had just discovered my then-favorite drink.... Manhattans! Yum! A couple other gals and I had gone out for a *good* lunch, and I think I had a couple too many Manhattans. We took a taxi back to work, and apparently I spoke to the driver all the way back... in a strong FRENCH accent!

Gotta love it!!! I don't know if you have been back to D.C. since 9/11 but it is so different. Sooooooooo sad. Barriers everywhere. I mean, we used to drive up to the Lincoln Memorial at Midnight, park right in front and run up the steps just to admire the statue and marvel at the city.

I walked to work every day and waltzed right in the front door on Independence Avenue. Now they have heavier security at Ag than they do at the Capitol Building! I'm serious. You have to have an appointment with someone and they actually have to leave their office and come all the way down to e*scort you. You cannot even go to the bathroom without a security e*scort.

DH went there yesterday to visit with some friends from way back when who still work there. I went last year, but just didn't want to go yesterday. I opted to go to the Smithsonian and see First Ladies' dresses and the Ruby Slippers!!

I don't know why, but the moderators have delayed my recent reply to Pat. This photo will be a repeat if that post ever appears.

I went to the Smithsonian today and one of the things I loved seeing were THE "Ruby Slippers" from 1938. Dorothy wore them in the Wizard of Oz movie.

Sounds like you are having fun, and you look wonderful!

Did you know there were actually 10 pairs of Ruby Slippers used in the movie? Just a bit of trivia learned while doing the play last year in community theater (I was Aunt Em).

I don't go back 39 years to the Flagship but I'm not far off from that! I worked several blocks away on 7th street and we would periodically go their for lunch and of course rum buns. We also use to visit the cafeterias in the different Federal office Buidlings. The cafeteria in the Agriculture building was always one of our favorites!

I thought of YamYam when I spent 45 minutes trying on various sizes of pants this morning. Some days we should ditch the scales and just play with the pants..

We had a lot of lunches in our Ag building for sure! I've been to lots of the Fed building cafeterias as well. The Flagship is certainly not what it used to be in it's hay day. They used to have white linen table cloths, napkins and the servers dressed up. It was what we call "fru-fru" Now they have a large buffet. You can still order from menus, but it's an old place and showing it's age (like me!).

The food is great! But, like I said, the atmosphere is not what it used to be.

We had a great time, though, and sitting out by the harbor was terrific.
