If I could just caution people - instant oatmeal isn't the best for your DDs. It's cut very fine so the GI is higher and it won't keep you full as long as steel cut jumbo oats. Contrary to the advertising from the food companies, the instant isn't actually quicker to cook, nor easier either. And it's a good deal more expensive.
Either will be very low in calories and excellent nutrition, but if you need something to keep you going for several hours, do try the real stuff.
I suppose that's not really the point of this thread, but I felt a bit of hostility in some posts about my information. Perhaps before jumping on someone's info one should do some proper research of their own. I have heard lots of new info on posts and just because it was new to me I didn't assume it was wrong. I stayed open minded and did some research. And more often than not I was the better for it. I learned something new. But I never responded in an aggressive manner because I didn't agree or in their case had the wrong info.I found this a bit hurtful. I have a degree in the health sciences with several classes in nutrition, I don't mind being questioned of course as long as it doesn't feel personal, this did by some.having a blaring huge label posted in my face was a bit much esp when I mentioned that my box said 100 calories also but was still incorrect. I felt that that was not in keeping with the spirit of this forum. Ps. The instant keeps me full for hours!
I use the Quaker Old Fashioned Oats (5 minute cook stuff) it's 150 for 1/2 cup dry (makes about 1 cup and is very filling, I add light brown sugar fro some nice sweetness but it boosts the cals to 200).
I know this isn't the purpose of this thread but I can't resist.
I can't stand oatmeal after eating whole oats (groats) but before groats I only ate the old fashioned since the instant is just pulverized rolled oats. The groats are 110 calories for 1/4 cup dry which makes 1 cup when cooked with water. So 1/2 cup cooked is only 55 calories and is very filling for me. For DD's I add a t of oat fiber and 1/2 t gluc which makes it really filling.
I love oats but never liked the instant-ever. Old fashioned all the way.

I make a raw breakfast with them and some avocado, vanilla, cinnamon, etc. I totally agree- old fashioned all the way!
I'm not trying to be difficult or anything, but above in what you posted, it says that the oatmeal contains 8 g of oats and 21 g of water...which would be about 28 calories since oatmeal is mostly carbohydrates and 1 carbohydrate is about 4 calories (I think)... do you think the number above is for 28 g of oatmeal already cooked with water (that is, not the entire packet)?
Anyway despite the narrow calorie margin for JUDDD it's probably not the end of the universe if 1 packet of oatmeal is +/- a few calories either way. Just observing though.
PS Yes, people are sensitive about discussions about food, I think especially when on a restrictive plan...try going over to the LC section and talk about eating carbs regularly and see what kind of responses you get lol...sorry that it was hurtful

I vote for the JUDDD theory of eat what YOU like, that is what makes this WOE such a joy, no matter what your choices are.

I hated it as a kid, so figure.

As somebody who replied to that other thread, and read the other responses, I absolutely take offense to people citing rude behavior and tact-lessness. Unless I missed a response, several of us were simply pointing out that we disagreed with the information presented by the OP.
There is a very large disrepency between 25 calories for a packet of oatmeal and 100, especially on a Down Day when EVERY single calorie counts!
And, according to my best friend who is a Registered Dietician, and just about EVERY other source I've found online, there are
4 Calories per gram of DRY oatmeal.
Therefore, a packet of DRY plain oatmeal is 112 calories. The instant kind may have a bit less because it's refined and they add some other stuff in there, therefore it's not pure oats. Hence the 100 calories on the packet label.
If this is considered "rude" then *sigh* so be it.

These are from my pantry:
Market Basket Instant Oatmeal plain, 1 packet (28g) 100 calories
Quaker Oats Old Fashioned (no not instant) but 40g (1/2 c dry) is 150 calories.
These are two totally different companies and the calories are comparable even though one is old fashioned (less processed) and one is instant (more processed), did they both misrepresent their calories on the packages?
I'm seriously not trying to start something but I don't think the 25 calories per 28 grams adds up. :dunno:

You're not wrong, Muffabuff - you're absolutely right. There are 25cals in 28g of instant oats. But ... That's 28g of instant oats made up with water - it's weighing the water as well as the oats. I suspect that 28g of instant oats made up would be quite a small amount in a bowl, unfortunately.
I think the USDA info is presented in a rather misleading way. But if instant oats is 78% carbs, 10% protein and 12% fat, that means that the 28g packet of oats contains 21.84g of carbs. A gram of carbs yields 4 calories. So doing the math, 21.84 x 4 = 87.36 - there's nearly 90 cals in the carb element of that 28g packet, without counting the cals from the fat and protein. Sadly, there's no way therefore that there could be only 25 cals in the packet. :sad:
It's a pity - I was quite excited for a while there! I love instant oats!

Those were the totals that stood out that prove that the amount of oatmeal used in the serving you looked up was much much smaller than 28g. I'm betting they used water enough to make the serving size weigh 28g, that much water would be less than 1oz, that is 1/8 of a cup.....teenie tiny serving size!! If that is what they did it is extreamly misleading and if prepaired correctly the totals would be equal to the numbers I listed not the numbers you listed in the original post. If the calories were the only different number then I might agree with what you originally stated but I think due to the tricky labeling the 100 calories for 28g of dry instant oatmeal is infact correct.
