This is an old post, but interesting. I've also wondered about this.

I think this is true.

A couple years ago I wanted to be an old south antebellum girl for halloween. I went to this great halloween costume rental place we have that rents out real dresses from the time rather than buying a piece of garbage replica that I would only wear once anyway.

I was at my smallest then but not quite goal and I struggled to find one that fit me! The lady explained to me that my options would be limited because of how women's bodies were back then.

I ended up renting a flapper dress that year.

My goal is to get into one of those dresses!

I tend to have a small waist, and I love the "fit-and-flare" type of retro dresses. I don't own any, but I want one (some). That is, when I get closer to goal, I think. My waist is 33.8 now, at 178, so I expect it will be closer to 26 when I get down to 130. Here's hoping anyway.

Krow- look up 'genetic regression toward the mean' about your height. Very interesting stuff.

My waist was always small to the point where I typically had to buy 1 or 2 sizes above my waist size in order to fit my hips.

At my current weight, I thought my waist would be around 5-6inches smaller than it is (I remembered it as being approx. 8-10inches smaller). This may reflect my post-menopausal status and distribution of bodyfat.

I have some of my mother's clothes. Despite 8 full-term pregnancies and several miscarriages, she kept an astonishing hourglass shape into her 50s (unlike me). I don't know how common this is nowadays.

Interesting post ...

In my late teens/early 20s (1958-1970), I weighed around 125# and had a 21" waist. Measured about 32"-21"-34" - and I'm being generous on the bust measurement. Then I had 6 kids, got (significantly!) older, and gained a ton of weight.

Now my waist is about 25", doesn't seem to want to get any smaller - and my hips are around 37-38".

I have a huge gap at my back waist with pants, though I think some of that is from my belly pulling forward?

I have 4 daughters - NONE of them has a tiny waist - yet my mother and aunts did. It might well be the foods we now eat

There is an important historical aspect to why women in the 1950s were thin. These women had lived through World War II, and food was strictly rationed and nutrition was very poor during this time period. Preceding the war, was the Great Depression when again food was scarce.

And yes, they didn't have a lot of corn syrup laden processed wheat and corn based stuff and "fast food" placed like McDonalds were a special treat, not a daily or even weekly occurrence. The lack of good nutrition also explains why people were not growing to their maximum potential heights.

By the way, I have a size 12 shorts bought 13-14 years ago which are snug on the waist and mega loose on hips and thighs. So weight and waist size has certainly shifted! My current size is 8 or 10 depending on the brand and I am heavier!

In England, they always used to say the "milk man" was to blame but alas, he's gone too now with supermarkets and all! Our neighbor used to tease me and say I was bought from the gypsies as they came and camped in the village every year, to repair/sell kitchen utensils!

And it wasn't that terribly long ago that sizes started to shift either! Back in 99-2001, I wore a size 12. Unfortunately, I didn't keep any of those jeans. But now, I weigh approximately the same as I did back then and wear a size 10. And it's the same brand of jeans! (Riders)
