Newbie Confused about calorie counter on JUDD site

Ok, so I went to the JUDD site to use their calculator for my up days. The numbers with 20% as the figure entered are: 1802 up days and 360 for down days.

Yet from what I've read it seems like down days should be 500 cal during the first two weeks. Until I used the calculator, I was under the impression that the first two weeks would be more strict (and therefore lower calories). What am I missing?

I am doing my best to read all of the info on this board and the JUDD site, but I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Help!

500 is the "go to" calories for DD's per Dr J.
He suggests fasting is best but realizes most people can't or won't fast on DD's.

Dr. J in his book recommends the 500 calories for DD's for the first two weeks to get you used to lower calories I would guess. He even recommends drinking shakes (which I did) but most people use regular low calorie foods. Then after two weeks you go to the numbers that the calculator tells you. OR you can jump right in and use the lower number of 360. It is entirely up to you. I started with the 500 and then dropped to my 340 number and have been fasting on my last few DD's except for my last one. Experimenting again.

Isn't it amazing?

Some of us (raises hand) find 500 cal DDs too hard at first. We start higher and gradually decrease the count. Somewhere on that downward journey, most of us find a DD point that gives an acceptable rate of weight loss and stick to it. Frequently, that point is around 500 cals/DD. A lot of us find we lose best at a higher, or at a lower, level. And, sometimes we find we need to shake things up by lowering or raising DDs. Ultimately, many of us find JUDDD is mostly learning very important things about ourselves that we never suspected before.

I did not "lose" weight. I evicted it. It is gone and it ain't coming back!

JUDDD cares about calories. JUDDD does not care what you eat. Your body probably does.

to Juddd. It really is very simple. I would suggest you do 500 calories for DD for the first two weeks. After that you can either keep it at 500 or go to your lower number if you feel comfortable with that. Try not to over think it.

yes, I will be doing 500 for the first two weeks, at least. I can't imagine going below that as the site says...not initially anyway.

Today is my first down day, and I'm a bit nervous LOL

The important thing about the first 2 weeks is to get the SIRT1 gene activated. It takes about 2 weeks to get it fully active and producing the magic protein/enzyme (dome doctors refer to it as a hormone like protein). 500 calories will do it easily.

But, I want to add that if 500 calories is too hard, you can go back to the calculator and choose a higher % (anywhere up to and including 45%). It means you get to eat more calories on DDs and still be in WLM. You may lose slower, but don't think you have failed if you go over 500 on your DDs in the beginning. You will still be activating the gene.

Does that make sense?? Could be that reading Dr. J's book would be helpful to you. Keep coming to the forum with all your questions! We want to help you get going!

I too actually started at 600c for DD's and am working my way down. Now I am closer to 500. Not sure I will ever go below that.

Yam-Yam, can I ask a question? I've read all the info I can find online (and I found a good amount!) I saw several reviews for the book that said the only complaint they had was that there was no additional info in it that they couldn't find online.

In your opinion, is it worth buying the book?

Hey Circus!

If your online research has you comfortable with why/when/how sirtuin enzymes are produced, and what they do, then the book may be an interesting read but I don't think it is crucial.

I have some problems with the book:
1) It was written in 2003 when SiRT1 was the only sirtuin enzyme that had been identified and the science of IF/caloric restriction was in it's infancy. Science/knowledge has progressed far beyond that point since then.

2) Dr J says JUDDD is the framework within which any WOE will work. Then he goes on for page after page bashing specialized WOEs like LC. And giving all the usual 'eat the food pyramid' advice. I skip over entire chapters.

3) The relationship between moderate/heavy exercise and JUDDD is, we know from this forum, complex. To me, the book kind of assumes "I know you don't exercise" and gives baby steps advice.

I believe Dr J has learned a LOT about IF/alternate day caloric restriction since 2003. I believe he has gotten a lot of feedback from a lot of JUDDD BUDDDs.

I wish he would write an updated version. I would grab that!
