Calories in apples?

How do you count the calories in an apple?

When I look at My Fitness Pal, I get all types of different amounts... some for "apple" in general, some for specific types of apples... and then I was trying to figure out how it would be different if I ate the skin or peeled it off and tossed it... and do some of the estimates for apple calories include every bit of the skin, core, seeds in addition to the "meaty" part of the apple? I was looking at the package of apples I bought, and it said 120 calories in one large apple... but it was a bag of small apples... :dunno: And again, is that including all of the core and peel, which if not eaten, cuts the calories a bit?

And are calories different in different types of apples? I generally go for golden delicious, gala, cameo, and macintosh.

Hi there, I'm new to JUDDD but not LC. Since apples vary so much in size, I just weigh the peeled, cored apple in grams to enter in ******, the program I use.

i usually just figure 100 calories per apple and also per banana

Cut it off the core and go by apple type and physical weight of the part you can eat. It's a bit more picky, but a lot more accurate :)

I core, cut up, and weigh what is left. EVERYONE underestimates apples (I learned this doing hcg years ago) they are much larger than you think and it can be four times the calories you were going to enter. Plus those calories are almost all sugar which affects the insulin damaged/resistant dramatically.

those "small apples" are really industry large apples. we have no clue without removing the inedible bits and weighing.

I looked closely at the label - the "large" apples supposedly in the bag are supposed to be 8 oz. I weighed the individual apples and they were all 5-point-something oz! Better yet, I found the largest in the bag, a 5.9 oz apple, took off the skin, cut out the core and was left with just 4 oz. of edible apple! That's only half the calories of what the bag says each should be! According to this bag, it's 120 cal in 8 oz, so just 60 cal in the 4 oz of edible apple... I've actually been estimating 80 cal for these apples, which means I've been overestimating! I did find one place in My Fitness Pal that said 15 calories for 1 oz of apple... that might be the easiest way for me to remember... just gotta keep weighing all my food!

Thanks for the input everyone!

Now... are all type of apple created equal calorie-wise? 4 oz of golden delicious = 4 oz of gala = 4 oz of macintosh = 4 oz of cameo?
