Thank you all for the reassurance - it really helps. I think you are probably right - he wasn't talking about those of us who were struggling with too few calories (i.e., 1200).

I agree about having a DD after going way over one day and that getting back into rotations should take care of it.

As far as the discussion about what Dr. J means by "normal" calories? If you look at his calculator, he calls the UD calorie calculation "normal" calories. I think that's what he is referring to.

I'm really happy that this info was helpful to everyone :-)

I am recovering from my crazy UD today (eating lots of 5 calorie raw cultured sauerkraut but now I am od'ing on sodium ha) and feeling back in control.

I am excited/nervous about my next weigh in. Tomorrow will be 2 full weeks and I only weighed myself once at the doctor's office. May just wait another week or so...

Nickicaps, weigh when you are good and ready. You will do fine.

You are our JUDDD hero for getting a response from Dr J.

Thanks so much for reaching out to him and posting his response. I noticed that Sophie had also determined that something changed at the 8 week mark. I'm not there yet. Just finishing week 2. But, it's helpful to hear that counting cals is going to be the name of the game on UDs. I'm doing that now and I can already see how easy it is to under-calculate the number of cals consumed in one day. My UD limit is 1869 and I can blow that easily in two meals if I'm not careful. By counting carefully, I'm learning what 1869 looks like in different situations (eating out, cooking at home, eating on the run, etc).

If I'm eating 2500+ cals on my UD's at the 5 week mark, I shudder to think what I'll be like in a few weeks!

That is so wonderful of Dr. Johnson to answer your questions! And it WOULD be awesome if he'd join this forum!

I count my calories daily via ************. I track them and analyze them. Watch the foods I eat, too, so I can hopefully identify any which aren't helping me reach my goal.

So far, the JUDDD Magic ROCKS!

Hi Group: I'm a two-week JUDDDDer. I read this thread with interest after just having read Dr. Johnson's book. Obviosuly I have not hit the 8 week point where I have to count UD calories, but it seems to me we can use the calculator available online to determine what UD calories should look like, since we use it to determine DD calories. Here is the link: UpDayDownDay Diet™ Plan ? How to Succeed

Am I wrong?

We often recommend using the calculator to determine BOTH days' calories and try to get close to the numbers given. I used the numbers given for both days from the very start.

What I wonder though is when do we adjust the cals (re-calculate with our lower weight and then start eating the lower calculation), should we just do it automatically or if things start to slow down/stall

I started at 199.25 and at that weight my calculations on the JUDDD website were UD 2028 and DD 406. At my current weight (184.75) the calculator says UD 1955 and DD 391 so not too much difference, especially the DD.

This is what I have done since day 1 too. Some days I went over though because I couldn't stop eating but got much better at it now.

I just kept lowering DDs, but I think UDs for the most part lowered themselves since I am no where near as hungry and can't eat what I use to be able to consume. I just don't get hungry that often and sometimes it doesn't occure to me to eat on UDs for hours and hours, but I just focused on lowering DDs as I lost.

As long as you're still losing, there's no reason to adjust your calories. I've adjusted mine a few times, over the course of almost a year, but not until I started slowing down. I think it was around 25-30 pounds lost each time before I lowered. I'm really slowing down again, and have considered lowering my calories, but then, I also have to remind myself that I'm nearing goal, so it WILL be slower.

I have to add here that i have found that i want to revert to old habbits and eat less and less.. I have decided to go back into weight loss mode and for me at least it keeps me EATING.. I also find that is i eat way up almost beyond what my normal calories are at this weight i do better.. Recently looked it says, like 1800 and some change for my current weight. but if i eat closer to 2000 or 2100 my body seams to react better, its a strange concept that we must EAT to LOSE..

Its very strange! And magical!

Yesterday I had a hard time going over 1400 on my UD. After years of frustration I finally got myself to stop eating when I feel full...most of the time. So its hard to rationalize simply eating to get the calories in.

I'm still very new at this so I'm sure I'll find my groove as time goes along. I'm feeling good and losing, so far so good!

JayLynn, you're absolutely right, and wise. It takes a while to find your groove. Then, sometimes, that groove changes and you look for it again. You sort of relax into this after a bit. Glad to have you here.

I know what you mean Tea. I have the feeling when he wrote that, that he didn't fully understand how important the wider caloric swings are to consistent losses. And now he's MIA, at least from his Alternate Day Diet work.

I am a firm believer in eating up to (or even slightly past) UD calories. In fact, I think I'll start a thread on it from my recent experience. My losses stalled for about 3 weeks, I re-upped my UD calories and slightly lowered my DD calories and ouila, losses started again.

tea- I was also thinking that if he found out differently than the original book stated, that he could just follow up with a 2nd book-sort of an update.

After doing 14 days of hardcore Stillman's (didn't cheat once) and stalling on my 2nd weigh in, I started looking around for answers and found this thread and decided that today would be the 1st day of my JUDDDD diet journey...

Are y'all sure this WOE works? lol I'm skeptical but hopeful because I am sick of eating the same old things day after day after on Stillman's and not losing any more additional weight.

The JUDDDD website said that on my UP days I should be eating over 2K calories while on my DOWN days I should keep my total caloric intake to 400 and change...anyone have that ratio?
