So - how do you do it?

I read and read and read and MOST of you say it is hard to get your up day calories in. I eat WAY too many calories on my UP day. I had thought that JUDDDing was like not dieting everyother day. For me - an up day is a diet too. I guess I just LOVE food too darn much (which is why I am in the mess I am in). I do GREAT all day - come home and eat until I go to bed. I know I need to find other things to occupy my time, but.........

Really - just vening. I know this is my own problem and I need to figure it out soon.

I have only been JUDDDing one week tomorrow, so maybe I will gradually get those calories down. Or at least get them down more days than they are up.

Today is a down day, so I am pretty much prepared to starve.

I could eat way more an UD too - but I am learning to make better choices.

Yes, I suppose we are 'dieting' on an UD, for those of us who have some serious issues with food quantity!!

However, don't worry if you go over a little bit every now and again.

What I find helps is - although I would love to go out for brekky - I have a pretty set breakfast - I know that I'll eat X cals for brekky - try to have a goodish lunch (not always though) and then I have plenty of cals left for a good dinner, maybe some ice cream, a glass of vino.

Yesterday though, I had subway for lunch (thinking that it would be nothing basically) - but it ended up meaning that I didn't have my normal cals in the evening. It was a very disappointing night.

You can do this. and you're doing it!

Thanks Vicky and laceylady...

I am coming to see how I got in this mess --- my family eats high calorie food in general. I will have to wean everyone off that. My DH is trying to do this with me, but he just doesn't get it so far. In time... right? Got nothing but time.

I will say - I am sleeping better and DH made the comment this morning that he isn't waking up at 2:30am anymore to take his pain pills for his back. So good benefits from just one week.

What's your thoughts on red wine? I have read that it is great to add a glass of red wine nightly? (I don't care for wine, but...... I can choke it down)

Also resveratrol - what's everyones thoughts on it?

I wouldn't choke it down. You supposedly have to drink a lot to get reservatrol benefits.

Google what else works for the some of the same benefits - you may find something you like!

I bought 12 bottles today!!! They will last a while - but they were 'bin ends' and so at a really good price!

and give it another couple of weeks. The JUDDD appetite suppression hasn't kicked in for you yet, and when it does those UDs will be much better. We tend to get fuller faster on JUDDD, something that never happened to me when I was LCing, and now when my eyes are bigger than my stomach it REALLY is the case. Yesterday I started out with a 10 oz chicken breast and only finished 7 oz of it. I couldn't stuff another bite in my mouth if I tried. I was really hungry, too when I started out, but my stomach just said "NO WAY" and I had to stop!

Give it more time!! JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE, 2 WEEKS IS ALL!!

We are sooooo the same! I have posted my concerns in various places on the JUDDD threads about my up day calories. Up days are diet days for me too! Appetite suppression has nothing to do with it for me. I have plenty of appetite suppression, but I love to eat. I really do not end up feeling sick like others do when I eat a lot. I love to eat and I happen to like high calorie foods! Give me a basket of fresh hot tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole and a margarita and I am in heaven.

Something that has been helping me a bit is to only eat two meals a day instead of three. I was eating about 500 calories for breakfast and now I have switched it so that I eat a nice hearty lunch and I have more calories to eat in the evening when I really want them. I am also drinking a glass of water with psyllium husks to give me more of a sense of fullness. It seems to be helping me.

I also cut out drinking my coffee with 2 Tbs of HWC per each cup because 3 cups of coffee with the cream really took up a lot of my calories!!I wouldn't waste my calories choking down wine if you don't like it!! I do have a glass on up days. I love the Cocobon wine from Trader Joe's. But I drink it because I like it and not for the health benefits as I am not sure how many benefits would come from a 4 oz glass.

we all have to adjust our food choices for a healthier lifestyle.
Something I have started looking at because a friend of mine does it is Clean Eating blogs and online magazine. She hasn't lost weight, but she has way more energy, positive attitude etc. I already eat clean/whole/real although I don't do nonfat on up days. There are lots of ideas, recipes and menu plans that might help on up days for making a change here and there to cleaner food for your family.
We love food too, foodies unlimited in my family. With my health issues we have slowly but surely switched our food choices over years now. FOoooOD! (you have to imagine that being read in a zombie voice like BRAaaINS!)

I am soooo this way, too. I love to eat and some days it seems there just aren't enough calories in an UD. My plan is usually to have two light meals and then one meal where I can really splurge. I love my chocolate, ice cream and wine, too! Yes, counting the calories is kind of like still dieting but not like dieting with only 1100 calories for the day, you know?

Just keep on keeping on. You will get this!

Oh and Beverly, I'm a chips, salsa, guac and margarita girl myself! Could eat that EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!

You are not alone! There are a lot of people who can control their UD calories. We probably hear from them the most on the posts because who wouldn't want to talk about how great they are doing.
But I just weighed myself and I am up again... I thought I had done okay this week... I even started to exercise everyday. I have been stuck at the same weight for weeks and now I am movin on up.

Here are a few things that help me on UDs
(some are from doing Kruse's leptin reset, others are what work for my diabetes...YMMV)

--eat a LOT of protein at breakfast (at least 30g)+adequate fat (protein at other meals, too)
--wait at least 4-5 hours between meals
--NO SNACKING!!! (I may snack on DDs since meals are smaller)
--only one carby meal per day...and only if it's something I will really enjoy. No eating carbs just to "fill up".
--In general, on UDs I try to eat things that are very nutritious and/or that I will really enjoy (or have craved on a recent DD). If I take a bite of a donut or something and it is disappointing, I will stop eating or even spit it out and wait for something better (I don't spit out my dinner or veggies--I mean desserts, junk food, snacks at a friend's house...)
--I really love liberal amounts of cheese, butter, mayonnaise, sour cream, salad dressing, etc. Since I can easily add hundreds of calories at every meal if I'm not careful, but I also feel deprived & cranky if my food is too "plain", I eat my salad/sandwich/burrito/toast etc with frugal amounts of condiments but add a little more to the last 2-3 bites!

I often eat only 2 meals on UDs--brunch & linner.
I don't think I've heard anyone else mention this, but for a while I found that skipping breakfast meant I would NOT be able to fall asleep that night.

I still eat low calorie meals on my UD, so I guess that's why. I make my meal plans (dinners) based on low calorie meals, that are about 300 calories, before I go to the grocery store. I use a lot of recipes for dinners off of skinnytaste.com - it's made for people doing weight watchers but a lot main course recipes are 300-400 cals. If I eat them on a DD, I'll have dinner and maybe some fruit or low calorie yogurt and that's it. If I have them on a UD, I have 3 meals that are 300-400 calories and then I have LOTS of room for snacks, chocolate, dessert, wine, whatever I want. So I don't feel like I'm dieting on an UD at all. If I had bigger/less healthy meals and couldn't snack or give into my sweet tooth, that's what would set me up to feel like I was never eating what I wanted.

Reconfirming a couple of good points made that really work for me:
try 2 great meals a day on UD
no snacking
lots of protein

I think your quote "I do great all day--come home and eat until I go to bed" is a hint. Try backing off during the day. I've been eating closer to noon for my first meal, and it is huge eggs, meat, avocado, cheesy kind of meal loaded with fat and protein that really satisfies me until dinner. My UD meals are each 600-700 cals.

This is me too! I don't have a problem with actual hunger on UD I just love to eat lots of great food. I am finding that to stay within my calorie limits on UD I need to pick my indulgences and tighten up my eating hours (miss breakfast). I am loving that JUDDD allows me to eat all these great meals and lose weight and it is teaching me a lot about managing my calories. Great learning experience for me and I am still having way to much fun and still losing weight!

If I wasn't trying to keep things mostly low carb, I could eat my UD calories in no time. I know lc things are usually much higher in calories, but I'm just so dang satisfied eating full fat things that I get fuller faster, stay happy longer, and it's actually hard for me to get in my UD calories.

But, man, if I was eating the carby things I love, I'd be really having to watch it. Although, ironically, I'm still having to watch it to get the calories up.

My friend is constantly astonished that I can put away so much food, and still want to eat. I have a voracious appetite - and like a lot here, not because I'm hungry, but just because I like to eat!

I don't have any tips to share, as I've only been JUDDDing 3 weeks and am still learning to limit my UD cals, but I will wish you the best! For me, it is a sense of accomplishment to not only get through my DDs, but also to get through on my UDs!

Too bad we don't live closer. We could go out on an occasional up day and feast on chips and a margarita!! I could also enjoy it daily. So yummy!!

This just occured to me yesterday I could very easily eat at least 1000 calories over my UD amount without a second thought.

Hungry Girl is going to make a ton of money off of me

What helps me is eating once a day on a DD and within a 6 hour window on an UD. Eating anything triggers more hunger for me, so by eating all at once, I ensure that I'm full for the day. Then it's off to bed and I don't awaken the hunger monster until the following evening.

I "love" crappy food. I also "loved" smoking. I quit smoking 6 years ago and I never once tell myself anymore that I'm missing out on something. But food is different, I can't cold turkey it. So I have to compromise.

Some days are going to be worse than others, but these rules seem to help ME:

Down days, 1 big meal only. I save calories for an evening snack IF NEEDED. These are not really an issue, I push protein... yesterday my down day was chicken breast, cucumber and tomato. That's all. I keep my down days mostly unprocessed and boring to give myself a bit of wiggle room on my up day.

Up days, while I'd like to move away from highly processed foods and only go for healthy things, it's not going to happen... why do they make crappy food taste so darn good? Anyways, I figured since most crappy food is really high in sodium, instead i'll watch my sodium intake. I will allow myself crappy food but only so much of it. This means that I'm counting my diet coke cans too.

I split my calories into three... lunch, supper, and evening snack. I aim for about 2200 cals on my up day so that's about 1000/1000/200. I weigh absolutely EVERYTHING and I stop putting food on my plate when I've reached the calorie goal for that meal. So lunch's goal was 1000 cals. I put some healthy-ish things on my plate and then added a snack cake :P Oh well, fits in my calories, but takes a big chunk of my sodium budget.

Oh I also don't eat until I've done my treadmill for the day. That's just to make sure that I don't procrastinate and push it further and further back, I can afford to do this though since I work from home so I can exercise whenever.

So anyways, I find myself bypassing some favorite foods sometimes because I just can't see myself wasting 600 calories on something that won't give me any "bang for my buck/calorie", which is great... because it's a choice I'm making, I'm never telling myself that I can't HAVE a food, I'm making a conscious decision to not have it in favor of something else that will make me happier... either by feeling good about my decision, or by not feeling hungry all night!

Great thread, a lot of good suggestions too. I am delighted to see posts from some who are struggling, that is what we are here for to help each other succeed, not simply to praise success.

Margaritas, chips and all that goes with it. Such is the stuff that dreams are made of, lol.

Terrilyn, here's what I do:

I realized that I have to decide whether I want decadent food or a lot of food. Some days I want quality, some days quantity. I can't have both, I have to choose. So some up days, like today, are about quantity. I eat Lean Cuisine meals, lots of fruit, fish, vegetables, lots of high-volume foods that are lower calorie. That way I can feel full. Oh, and I usually find a little room for a couple cookies or a small serving of something formerly forbidden--like a small ice cream cone, or a small order of fries, something like that.

On days when I want quality, which usually mean I'm going out for one or more meals, I eat sparingly the rest of the time and then go whole hog. So if I'm going to go out for mexican and I want guacamole and chips and a margarita, breakfast might just be tea and toast--or skipped. Lunch might be a grilled chicken breast and some steamed broccoli.

I started JUDDD thinking that every other day was going to be a food-fest. Reality has been a little different. But it's still very do-able. I hope you find the strategy or strategies that work well for YOU!

This was me!! I thought the same and very quickly saw that was magical thinking. While there is such a thing as JUDDD magic, it doesn't mean that up days can be a complete food fest. Now that I have come to accept that, I can get on with business!! Good point Luna.

Dang - how long does it take to accept that?

Stomach is actually growling today - but it is a DD, so it probably should.

I have to figure out the best bang for the buck meal tonight.... probably a chop chop salad

Terilynn - I also struggle w/UD cals. For some reason, I keep thinking I need to "stock up" on cals since the next day will be so low. Geez - you'd think I was a bear preparing for hibernation - or maybe it's the cavewoman instinct in me telling me to eat while the eatin's good. I'm just so afraid that I'll be sooooo starving on my DD if I don't fuel up really well on an UD. Anyone else feel this way?

Coming from Low Carb makes it easy... although I added carbs, LOTS of cabs I still dont eat empty calories and trigger foods. I am carb addict, I know if I ate a donut or a piece of cake it would trigger a binge and I would be out of control, so I dont go there. Luckily my hubby isnt a sweet eater so there are no sweets in the house.
I also swear by ACV as an appetite suppressant .

I don't count my UD calories but I'm pretty sure I go over almost every day. I'm maintaining bc I think about eating my calories in a "window" during the day. I don't feast all day long. I also feel guilty and up my exercise on UDs that I feel like I've overindulged. The biggest difference now is that I eat a couple pieces of french bread and I feel like I've overindulged...where before it would be too many cupcakes or chocolate

Just keep tweaking and trying. You'll find something that work for you (holding off breakfast or having a good breakfast) and you can keep that. The more things that you find work, the easier it will get.

I have been reading in this forum a long time and only posting more recently and I never ever have understood struggling to eat all the UD calories!! Many have talked about this over time. I thought something must be wrong with me! I decided it depended on where you were coming from, like very low carb or hcg or whatever, and I had not been on any diet for quite a while. Still not sure, and of course some days are easier than others, depending on where we are in life. It's menopause for me! Yay!

Hope things will smoothe out for you very soon. Everyone is so here for you!!

Oh, and....if we all could get together someday, somehow....we HAVE TO HAVE MARGARITAS, CHIPS, GUAC, & SALSA!!!!!!!!! (Hey, I believe in miracles!!)
