well I'll be darned

I switched over to this diet from Atkins. I've been doing this for a week. I have had carbs (yesterday I had fried shrimp, and a biscuit and 2 cookies with sugar and flour).

I just checked out of curiosity, and peed on a Ketostix. I'm in ketosis. It was pink! I'm just flabbergasted!

Pat (SoHappy) mentioned a study (I think it was Pat ) about how our JUDDD seems to do the same thing on our DDs as Atkins does, putting us in Ketosis.

I wish I could find the post for you, sorry!

Dr J says in the book that most/many people go into ketosis-- which remember, is just the inefficient burning of fat for fuel (which is what we want, right?)-- enough to benefit from the appetite suppression.

Seems to me, if you get that, you get pink on the stix! I try every now and then, maybe I'll try again tonight just for fun.

I've gotten pink on DDs. It's kind of fun when you know you've had bread and oatmeal and fruit and pizza.

That was probably me giving my lecture on sirtuin enzymes and the similarities between LC and IF/alternate day caloric restriction. Yep, both cause the body to burn fat preferentially (meaning, cannibalize mostly fat and very little muscle). Preferential fat burning = ketones eliminated = ketostix change color.

Sophie then added what I found to be the most interesting info: recent research is indicating restricting/eliminating carbs tricks the body into thinking it is in caloric restriction.

Both roads lead to weight loss and improved health. And, ultimately they might be the same road.

I've never heard of anyone reporting purple ketostix while eating carbs and JUDDDing though. Pink to faint pink seems to be the norm. Then again, on some people who who know they are deep in ketosis which eating LC do not see their ketostix change color.

I did not "lose" weight. I evicted it. It is gone and it ain't coming back!

JUDDD cares about calories. JUDDD does not care what you eat. Your body probably does.

When I was very strict LC, I never got over medium, and was usually small, even when losing well. When I've tested on JUDDD, I've been small. It's been very similar for me. Except on UDs, I don't even show trace.

According to Dr. A's website, if the stick is purple you aren't getting enough water. Any pink color indicates ketosis....lighter pink means you are drinking enough and peeing enough which dilutes the color.

I noticed this too. I just switched over from atkins almost 2 weeks ago. We always had a cheat day though and I would find that the keto stick wouldnt show any pink until 3 days after.

I've been flabbergasted as well to find that during my DD its showing pink! It amuses me that I've added all carbs back and even on a DD my carbs are way higher than I would have in an entire day on atkins!

Having read this thread, I went off and bought some ketosticks yesterday (DD). I felt that I was experiencing the feelings that people have described here, but it was only my second DD, and everyone seemed to be agreeing that it was week 9-10 that it really kicked in for them.

It was pink (now the lighest shade of pink, but I drank loads of water all day). I was astonished. Seems like it does work, and can work quite quickly!

Ok... apparently just on DD's do my sticks show ketosis. I'll try again in a few weeks. I was thinking that when that gene thing kicks in, your body should be staying in ketosis on all days. I've only been doing this diet a week, so I'm sure that gene hasn't activated yet.

I'm too bored with nothing to do apparently...lol

UDs will only show pink if you're low carb. I only ever show pink on DDs.

Maybe this is weird, I find that I can taste it when my body is losing. Sort of a metallic flavor, which I'm learning to love since it almost always comes with a lower number on the scale!

could be ketosis-- on LC, it gives really bad breath (the ketones enter the lungs through the bloodstream and get expelled that way, as well as in the urine) and DH has it pretty bad but at least he's losing
