Oh, Cinnabon, wherefore art thou...

So I became a JUDDD convert several months ago, after many months of LC. LC really did help me lose weight, improve my health, and reduce my sugar/carb cravings, but, like many here on this forum, I got to a "stuck" point where I wasn't losing weight any more and I didn't want to go back to the restrictive every day calorie counting of my youth (which never worked for long, anyway). I'm loving JUDDD and am keeping moderate carb, for the most part, since I just feel better w/o a carb overload. However, I am allowing myself occasional indulgences of the totally non-nutrive sort, filled w/sugar, chemicals and all sorts of crappy stuff - but tasty.

One of those I was planning on was a Cinnabon. I mean, I was totally obsessing on Cinnabons. I'd tried some a few local bakery cinnamon rolls, and they just weren't that right combo of softness and sweet cinnamony-butteryness. So I began my search for a Cinnabon. Used to be you couldn't go to any mall or airport w/o that heavenly aroma of buttery, yeasty, cinnamon delicousness wafting through the air. Now they're kinda hard to find, in my part of the country, any way. So I actually looked on line and found that a mall an HOUR AND A HALF from my home had a Cinnabon. So I drove all that way, really just for the Cinnabon, but to anyone that asked, so I could visit a particular store that isn't found nearer to me - ha ha (true, in a literal sense). I walked to the food court and there it was (angel choir singing). Wow, times have changed. Now they have mini cinnabons, cinna-bites, just the middle part, and, of course, the regular traditional full-sized (ginormous) cinnabon. Of course I ordered the original. I did force myself to go to another food court vendor and get a nice big protein enriched salad and ate that first, hoping to minimize the sugar/insulin rush. I chose a quiet, sunny corner and sat down to eat. Finally the moment came. I opened the little carton, readied my knife and fork, and dug in, making sure I had just the right proportion of cream cheese frosting, outside and middle portions in my first bite. Then...Eh. Just not as good as my memory cinnabon tasted. Sure, it was tasty, but way too sweet for my modified taste buds. So now my obsession is over and my dreams will no longer be filled with dancing cinnabons. However, during my quest, I did find that the original rise and bake Rhodes frozen cinnamon rolls are actually better (and easier to find)!

The next quest? The perfect tiramisu (that I don't have to make myself).

I think I'm the only one on the planet who didn't go ga-ga over Cinnabon rolls. I had one at an airport once. Mine wasn't quite baked fully, so the inside was a bit gooey-doughy in the middle, so maybe that's what spoiled it for me.

BUT.. I'm excited to hear Rhodes has cinnamon roll frozen dough, because I can get that in my local grocery store. And will!

Your funny story about driving a hour and a half for a roll had me laughing.

Pat - if you get the Rhodes cinnamon rolls, make sure to get the original ones, not the "anytime" version. Supposedly, those you can just stick right in the oven w/o letting them rise first. IMO, they come out like chunks of cinnamon flavored lead dough. Yuck. The originals rise and bake up fluffy and light. Yummo. And their dinner rolls are amazing, too. Homemade taste w/o the work!

Enjoyed reading this, Tracey! And I've been known to drive far, far for something on rare occasion that I really want too (not necessarily a food item, but it makes no difference).

Also, I've found out some things I denied myself on LC and looked forward to having later on JUDDD just didn't taste as good as my memory either.

Or that I like my own homemade version better now. One example is a local pizza place. I used to die over their cheese pizza. Perfect crust, sauce, cheese. I didn't want any topping on it, just wanted to savor the wonderful 3 part combo of that cheese pizza. Well, since going to JUDDD and moderate carb from LC eating, I've worked on my pizza "recipe" at home, and love it. So what happened the last time I ate at that pizza joint?

Ugh. Their pizza was nothing special at all. Fairly bland, actually.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on Rhodes cinnamon rolls. I will try them sometime. I am a cinnamon roll FREAK. You know what's ironic? I've never had a Cinnabon. I'm like you in that I'd have to drive an hour and a half to get one, and I never did try one in the first place. I think a part of me was scared I'd get start an addiction I didn't need. I've had to keep my cinnamon roll consumption down to "occasional" as it is. Recently picked up some from the Amish and omg - so good! I have to really portion them or I'll be in trouble.

Interesting thing is, I seem to self-limit automatically on stuff now after being on JUDDD. As long as I stay focused on what I'm eating and how my body is feeling, I can just tell when it's had enough. The item no longer has that same WOW effect as the first bite, and it'll start to cause a slight "blah" feeling in me as I go along eating it.

It's great that we are getting more intuned with our bodies. I think this is how we are meant to be.

Speaking of cinnamon rolls...I made Pioneer Womans recipe last night for the 2nd time. I had already had my calories for my UD, and did not even lick my fingers. Today (DD), I took the rolls to a family get-together, and was not tempted. Gave my DS and DIL some, and left the rest for the out of town visitors. I have not had but one very, very small one in the two times I have made them, but boy, do they smell wonderful! I've just come too far to tempt fate with something that is gone in a flash!

Thanks for the tip. I'll remember to get the original.

I have a good bread machine, so when I make breads, I use it to do the kneading. Then I take the credit for home baked bread! I'll do the same for the cinnamon rolls, of course.

DH loves Cinnabon. I personally can't stand them. I've never been a fan of cinnamon rolls anyway, but theirs are just sickeningly sweet to me. I did, however, try their dippers (Stix) or whatever they're called. I barely put any icing on and they are pretty decent.

Oh yummy, we used to always get Cinnabon's in my teenage years when we'd be prowling the mall. It's been years since I've had one but I'm pretty sure I would still like it ... Ohhh the icing - lol

Nice to know I can have one now without the guilt. Haha, just looked up the calorie count 880!! Ok, maybe the mini ones with no guilt

Thanks for testing out all those cinnamon rolls for us I'm looking forward to trying out Rhodes!

I dont have a thing for cinnamon rolls but my thing at the mall was always annie annes pretzels!!! OMG!!! They are so good! I'm more of a salty eater than a sweet eater and you can smell the pretzels everywhere. When eating lowcarb i would always say one of these days im gonna have a pretzel. I ate them too much before lowcarbing. I have been to the mall since starting JUDDD and it always been on a DD...lol I have passed them and smelled them and they smelled good but the temptation wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. Its been kinda like pizza with me. I said when i was doing lowcarb that if i cheated i wanted pizza. When i started juddd i said when i really started eating carbs i wanted pizza. I havent had pizza once...lol There are too many other things i have wanted for some reason. If i do have pizza i want it to be good pizza!!! I keep seeing the new Pizza Hut thin crust on tv and think that may be the one but who knows when and if it will happen. But now, i am thinking about annie annes pretzels!!! And, of course, its a DD!!! LOL

Well maybe, just MAYBE you dodged a bullet!!

I had a former cinnamon loving addiction of my own at Starbucks, and I developed a full blown cinnamon allergy! Ugh, it started with artificial cinnamon as that's what's in their syrup, but now, sadly enough, it's real cinnamon as well. A tiny bit of cinnamon makes me want to rip off my skin. So now I have to avoid the likes of anything made out of apples (cuz in baking, apples <3 cinnamon), as well as a bunch of other random stuff (ie my latest outbreak was cuz a ham sandwich had cinnamon on it, whoda thunk?!?) Anyway, enough of my ramblations....

For serious cinnamon fans...have you tried Ceylon cinnamon? It's rather difficult to find but I recently ordered a pound of it! It has a wonderful flavor, quite different from cassia.

If you make your own rolls, I imagine they would be even more heavenly!!!

I too don't like the Cinnabon buns, I noticed that they re-iceing them half way through the day (saw them do it).
