scale question

living in a *VERY* small house, i have no place that i can keep my scale. so i have to move it everyday. i keep it on a shelf and set it on the floor a couple minutes before i use it. i know that scales are most accurate if kept in one spot and not moved around.

my question is, is there a brand that maintains consistency in spite of being moved everyday?

Mine is just a digital health-o-meter from Walmart. If I understood the directions right, it said to recalibrate it if you move it by turning it on and letting it go off once without stepping on it. Then you turn it back on again to weigh. Maybe I was half asleep when I read that, but that's what I do if I happen to move it around in my bathroom.

Yes!!! I bought the Weight Watchers travel body weight scale. It's very light weight, has a handle on it and I take it with me on airplanes, long car rides where we drive from northern to southern CA.

It is very precise. I have a Tanita body monitor scale which was very expensive. This weighs exactly to the .2 ounce, the same as the Tanita when I put them side by side.

I weighed on the travel scale, then picked up my 20 pound kettle bell and weighed again...exactly 20 pounds. It's accurate!!

I will send you a link so you can read about it. It's very inexpensive.

Wow, it's on sale and qualifies for free shipping if you can find something to buy for $5.01.

i bought a health o meter and was complaining about it today in the weighing thread.
i got on it once and then a minute later and it gave me two different weights off by more than 2 pounds!! so i have NO idea how accurate any of my single measures were before today either... it said accurate up to 400

Do you have it on a hard, level surface?? Tile or cement is best. One reason I HATE the scale at my doctor's office is that they have it in the carpeted hallway!!! Everyone knows a scale is not accurate if you place it on carpet!!

I have tile floors in my bathrooms and kitchen and they are nice and even and flat.

I think even a linoleum floor is softer and might give inaccurate readings.

Maybe you should Google "Why I get different readings on my scale?" or "what makes a body weight scale inacurrate?" something like that. There might be some helpful info out there.

One thing I know about my HRM or BP monitor is that if the battery needs to be replaced, the readings will be all over the place. Pop a new battery in one of those, and the numbers are accurate again.

yep...your post is what prompted my thread. as what you described happens to me at times. dh thinks it's silly to step on the scale more than once, but for some reason, i have to step on it at least 3 times.

So now I can blame the carpet at my doctors office for why their scale weighs me so much heavier!!

Seriously!!! I have talked to the nurse and doctor about it, but they don't have any intention of changing it. I go in sometime in May for my annual check up. I think I will bring my portable scale and my 20 pound kettle bell. I'm going to put my scale down on the tile floor in the examination room, do the 20 pounds is accurate demonstration. Then we shall compare that to their old scale (which, by the way is supposed to be tuned up and re-calabrated every month or so! And it has never been!) Then we'll see the difference!

They tell me everyone complains about it because it weighs much heavier than it should.

These words...........my scale is a cheapy scale I got at big lots one day. I know its off, a 5lb bag of flour weighed in at 3.8 pounds then at 4.5 then at 6.5. The scale I had I should of kept for me, but my daughter wanted it. It weighs a 5lb bag of flour as 5lbs. And it weights me 2 pound less........Now the scale at work......I really want that one!!! It weighs me at a number I like....

Today out of curiousness..........I weighted on my scale at 178. My daughters scale at 176. The scale at work 174!!!

So honest to pete I have no clue what I weigh......I think I might go with 174!!

Dazy: Take the battery out, leave it out for a few minutes, put it back in. Make sure you look at which end of the battery should be "up" when you are taking it out. If the battery got giggled, that could be it. I hope they didn't send you one with a bad battery!!!

If that does not fix it, contact amazon.com (I'm assuming that's where you got it?) They have a really great return/replace policy. They send you the postage, you print it out and tape it on the box and they will even arrange for UPS to come to your house and pick it up!

The other thought I have is: are you "tapping" it hard enough with your foot?? You really need to put good pressure on it to set it to the zero setting. I think they made it that way so that it won't get bumped by accident, like in the overhead compartment of an airplane, and stay on, wearing out the battery.

I'll come back and check and see if taking the battery out and putting it back will work. You pulled the clear tape off the battery compartment, right?

i am not home right now, so will mess with it later this evening. thanks so much for your input!

it *does* come on, but only if i tap the edge or turn the 'kg/lb' switch back and forth. and i did push fairly firmly in the middle and nothing.

When my HRM battery gets jiggled or when it starts to go bad, my HRM will come on but then the numbers go whacky or it will display another message. Same thing with our BP monitor. Still turns on, just does not work right. Then when I replace the battery, it works.

Still, you should not have to buy a new battery because those are expensive. Do what you can and then call amazon and get a replacement. Like I said in the PM, I'm bummed because I love my scale so much!!

so i got the scale out last night. if i "tap" really hard in the center (ie: stomp on it) it comes on. is that normal to have to hit it so hard?

With mine, it's a firm "push down" but not super hard. Don't know what to tell you! Maybe you could call the company that makes it and ask if that's normal?

What if you actually stand on it?? Does it come on? What does the LCD read if it does? Does it say "Error"? That's what mine does. Sometimes I still forget about the tap-on procedure and just get on it. It always says error so I have to step off and wait a minute.
