popcorn amounts - please help!

I read here that 3 cups of air popped popcorn is equal to around 100 calories. When I google around, most sites back that up.

But yesterday, I bought mini 100 cal microwave popcorn bags. My husband was over the moon that he could eat one on his down day as a snack. This addition is going to keep him so happy. But... it said each bag was 5.5 cups. I don't get it. How could that be?

Do any of you have 100 cal bags that say the same? Are they lying? I don't want to be unknowingly feeding him an extra 50-70 cals.

BTW, the brand is Act 11, butter and natural flavors with 2.5 grams of fat.

I think that around 30 calories per cup of (plain, non-buttered) popcorn is right on and isn't going to change per brand.

Now with those 100 calorie bags ... I think only about 2/3 to 3/4 of the kernels actually pop, so I would feel safe calling 1 bag 100 calories! But you can always measure it out to be on the safe side.

I've been told to follow the nutrition on the container of foods because there are federal guidelines that it has to be right.

My experience is that Act one has smaller kernals when they are popped.

I buy Orville Redenbacher for that reason. His kernels pop up big and fat and fluffy and hardly any of them are left behind. whether it's microwave, or plain for my air popper or electric whirly popper, I buy O. R.

So, 5 cups of Act one, because they are smaller and leave some kernels behind would be the some calories as 3 cups O.R. Make sense?

I think you are fine. Just follow what it says on the box.

I love Orville Redenbacher too, and get the "Natural Simply Salted" most of the time. 4.5 cups popped has 170 calories.

So for kicks I popped a bag and measured. All the kernels popped surprisingly and it came to around 4 measuring cups. I wonder if the 3 cups =100 calorie guideline uses 8 oz cups rather than 6.

Urrgggh it's so much easier/more accurate to measure the kernels before popping! I never make microwave popcorn lol

My DH and I have been eating a 100-calories Orville Reddenbacher's microwave popcorn bag every day since we started JUDDD and we're doing just fine. It's a great munchy on a DD afternoon.
