I gained 2.8 pounds!?! (Day #5 on JUDDD)

OK, Folks, I was prepared for a bouncing ball, but YIKES! A 2.8 pound gain?

I drank my water (80 oz+), but I ate 218 below my norm (will usually gain with that) and also ate a Chinese veggie stir-fry for dinner -- which had veggies I haven't touched since summer (carrots, water chestnuts, baby corn, etc.).

I've started with 1600 calories on my UDs:

MARCH
27 DD– 147# (492 calories)
28 UD – 146.8 (1753 c)
29 DD– 146.4 (490 c)
30 UD – 146 (1382 c ) 218 c below; ate Chinese veggie stir fry
31 DD – 148.8

Is this normal?

Thanks!

It's not unusual to see a 3-4 lb gain overnight on JUDDD. It's just a fact of the way our bodies hold onto water. I often see posts where people have gained a lot after Chinese food too. It has so much sodium or MSG that the body just grabs onto every last drop of water and doesn't want to let go for a day or two.

There's no way it's fat. If you subscribe to the calories in, calories out way of looking at it, you'd have to have consumed some unholy amount of calories to gain that much.

Check out the daily weigh-in threads and you'll see plenty of overnight gains/whooshes!

I agree, its just water weight. Hang in there. It will come back off. It usually takes me two days to normalize after I've had something really salty.

Chinese is high sodium. When I eat it, I expect a big bounce. Those pounds will depart very quickly.

Yep, I agree with the others, this is a very normal, NORMAL thing.

JUDDD is bouncy. Your water weight will show up in overnight bounces up the scale. It will also go away. Keep tracking your weight and you'll see the overall trend is down, despite the bounces up or down. Even in maintenance, I still bounce up or down 3# overnight on occasion. And as Dottie said, don't be shocked if at times you start bouncing up after a DD and losing after an UD sometimes. All sorts of craziness will ensue on JUDDD. Just KUTGW!

If you are coming from LC, the mindset is to lose everyday (or at least I did when I did LCLF) so a bounce up is frightening. But my normal weigh ins show about a 2 pound bounce up and down, up and down, for at least two weeks then a drop and the bounce starts all over but with lower weights. So the bouncing scale is NORMAL. If you chart your weight daily you will start to see your own personal weight loss pattern.

At almost the end of month one I bounced over 6 pounds up...and was above my start weight. Couple days later at the end of the month I reached a new low. Don't panic. If the bounces are too bothersome go ahead and only weigh every 6th or 8th day after a down day as Dr. Johnson advised us to do in the book anyway. Not that we listen My weight chart seriously gives me vertigo with the significant constant bounces.

I haven't weighed every day since month one (which I did as an experiment promising myself not to quit no matter what for the whole month)
When the scale is bugging me I stay off of it. Find what you can live with.
I will weigh on the first since that is my official weigh day.

Hi, CharlotteChick!

I agree with those who've already answered, above. Just a fluctuation brought on by, well.. who knows. Usually water weight for some reason, this time probably Chinese food.

And only a bounce up of 2.8 pounds? You're a lightweight!

Just stick with JUDDD, make sure your calorie numbers are set correctly, respect those numbers as your ceilings, and then.. watch your weight melt off of you as you enjoy foods that are whatever you want them to be.

Glad you're with us here!

I lost 7 lbs the 1st week. Then I found part of them again. Now on 13th day and have a new low so lost 9 lbs since beginning. But losing inches, and that is what matters.

This is my chart from the past 3 months-
that spike at Day 24-25 is 8 pounds- OVERNIGHT
In my case, it wasn't caused by food, it was Callanetics
I way-overdid it, and could barely move the next morning
once I got out of bed, which was a feat in itself

It's just the way it works

Pami, thanks for posting your chart. That is the perfect illustration to my explanation of weight loss on JUDDD being like a rubber ball bouncing down a stairway. Bouncing up and down, up and down, but still going downward overall.

Pami: Your chart is awesome! Can you start a new thread with that in the first post so it will be easy to find and I can look at it every day? You could name it "My Bouncing Ball Stairway Chart" in honor of Pat!!! Love that illustration!

I love the bounces now but maybe I'm just weird.

When I have a great, enjoyable, nutritious, freeing UD, I mentally prepare myself for the bounce next morning. Then when I step on the scale and see it, I smile and say to myself: "Just think of all the wonderful nutrients your body is getting from that food! Think of how your metabolism is going to speed up because of it and how the DD today will be a breeze because you have what it takes!!!!"

Yay for the bounces! The UPs and the DOWNS!!!!!!

I've started with 1600 calories on my UDs:

29 DD– 146.4 (490 c)
30 UD – 146 (1382 c ) 218 c below; ate Chinese veggie stir fry
31 DD – 148.8

Is this normal?

Thanks!
Yes this is normal. I gain anywhere between 1 to 3 pounds EVERY UD. Salt, stress, lack of sleep, and anything other crazy thing you can think up contribute to weight gain BUT it's all water so I just let it be. And also, you REALLY should eat up to your UD level. When I have eaten lower by as much as you have I have always gained the most.

HTH

I actually did start a thread, End of 3rd month, earlier, and that's where I pulled this chart from. I think I will start yet another one, call it "My Bouncing Ball Stairway Chart" like you suggested, and invite anyone else who has a chart to post along with me.

Yay! Thanks, Pami!!! I think many will be inspired and new peeps will be relieved and reassured all by your graph!

My daily weight chart is on graph paper -- old fashioned, huh?? The only way I can think of to get it on here is to take pictures of it! However, I started it in August and would want to show it all and now it's many pages taped together!

I don't know how to do charts on line like yours. Technically challenged here!

Absolutely! I do that pretty regularily. I lost 1 lb after yesterday's up day where I ate dinner out and went over my calories by ~50.

Isn't it crazy?!?!?!

Once we've had our first couple of great gains and losses / huge bounces on the scale, we begin to relax and just do our cycle, Up & Down, and have confidence that it will do its thing.

If after awhile it becomes obvious that we are bouncing, but not ever going downward in our bouncing, then it becomes time to address the issue of the accuracy of the calorie numbers, but until that time (which may never come) ... enjoy the ride!

I average my weights for the week. The "losses" don't seem as dramatic, because I'm not subtracting the lowest low from the highest high, but then the bounces aren't as upsetting, either.
