Popcorn

I searched the forum but didn't find any real info.

Have any of you used air popped popcorn, w/o butter, as a 'filler' on your DD's? According to my calculations, 3 cups of air popped popcorn is 93 calories. If I spray it will a tiny bit of olive oil using my Kitchen Spritzer, 3 cups is about 100 calories. I just use salt as the seasoning.

Popcorn really fills me up and even 1 cup at 32 calories is enough to take off the edge on a DD.

Since I haven't read the book yet (it's on the way), should I be using popcorn this way? I LOVE popcorn and haven't had it without guilt for sooooo long b/c of eating low carb.

Yep, if that popcorn fills you up and fits in your calorie limits, you get to eat it! Enjoy.

For me, it's all about the crunch. Butter makes it soggy in my opinion. My DH is like you...LOVES the butter! Needless to say, we can't share a bowl of popcorn. I make it, take out what I want and then let him kill the rest!!

I eat a small bag of microwave popcorn most down days, and have been successfully losing doing that. It fills me up and gives me that crunch. It was dinner last night!

I always thought the same thing because I used to always have air popped popcorn and the butter would always make it soggy.

But then.....

I tried it making the popcorn with coconut oil and holy smokes not only did the butter not make it soggy but it was better then at the movies!

Air popping your popcorn equals a soggy mess when butter is added.

Coconut oil popped popcorn and butter equals something so delightful it should be illegal!

I love the crunch too and wish there was a way to get the salt to stick without the butter. I love the butter but often don't want to 'spend' my calories on it. LOL

The "I can't believe it's not butter" says 0 per spray... but it would probably add up after a few sprays.

I've been eating the 100-calorie bags of microwave popcorn since I started JUDDD and it really helps fill me up on DDs. The crunch is very satisfying.

On a side note, just this week I was reading about how almost all corn is genetically modified and isn't really good for us. I researched a little and found companies that sell heirloom popcorn and it sounds like not only would it be healthier, but tastier. The popcorns now have been bred to pop bigger, but they still have a lot of husks and old maids. I found some brands that claim they pop up smaller and don't have any husks to get stuck in your teeth. They sound delicious. As soon as I'm out of my big Costco box of microwave stuff, I'm going to buy some non-GMO corn and pop it in a microwave popper. I think it might make a safe, healthier snack for my toddler granddaughter, too.

that's why we only do organic
also those microwave bags have carcinogens that transfer to the food
thanks American food industry

I'll have some Orville Redenbacher's natural popcorn on some DDs. You can enjoy each kernal one at a time and eat quite a lot for little calories. Enjoy your popcorn!

googled and found a really cool glass microwave popper for those who like to microwave their corn. Not expensive either. I leave my cast iron dutch oven on the stove top now, it never gets put away. you people have me craving popcorn.

and I know the ingredients are icky, but I used to eat popcorn drizzled with butter and then dusted with malted milk powder or ovaltine. wonder if there is an organic version of ovaltine? to die for.

I make my air-popped corn and spray away w/ ICBINB!! It tastes salty to me, but has zero sodium. It does not make me retain fluid or set off my cravings and is YUM-HO!!! Guilt free, filling treat in my mind. And, I don't worry about the calories adding up from the sprays. Works for me! think I'll go pop some right now...

Did you know you can put regular popcorn in a small paper bag, you know like a brown lunch bag, fold over the top, put it in the microwave and pop it like that? Pretty cool. I buy the huge container of Orville Redenbacher's popcorn @ Costco and it lasts me a long time.

Yep...that's how I've been doing it for a while now. Works well although I think I get more old maids doing it this way. It's better than dragging out my air popper for sure!!!

Today's a DD...off to make some popcorn!!!

Wow I had no idea you could do the brown bag method! I may try it someday!

I'm thinking of coming to JUDDD and I love popcorn! One time we were at the movies and DH got his with extra butter. They had the condiments self serve! He piled up some jalapeno peppers on top...I was like EWE! But I tried it and OMG! Amazing, well with coke! So now at home when I make it I put some jalapenos in and shake it up. With every few bites you'll get a jalapeno! OR I like to sprinkle the popcorn seasonings into mine like ranch or nacho cheddar! Just wishing I could find sour cream & onion!
