Ooh, wandered into the JUDD world and like what I see!
OMG, where have y'all been? I've been on LCF for a few years and never thought to check out the other plans. This sounds very interesting and right up my alley, as I've been wanting to add some bread and potatoes back into my eating.
Scared...but gonna give it a whirl. Went to the website and figured out my cals, and my big fear is my appetite. I have a huge appetite and stun my friends with all that I can eat, while still maintaining my weight. BUT, my new goal is to lose 20 lbs and even though I've been on induction level carbs, I have lost 1 lb in 12 weeks. Which leads me to believe I need to seriously consider lowering my calories intake - which really makes me sad. I guess turning 50 this year has its "rewards" huh? Question: What is an MD day? Is that when you've accidentally overeaten on a DD? Tres confused. Thanks! |

I think people use MD to mean a "middle day" or or "maintenance day" where you eat 50-60% of your normal calories like you would if you were in maintenance. Some of us do that to keep calories low on a day we would normally have as a DD but that isn't manageable as a full DD (like a weekend day or day away on a trip for me). I do a MD on Mondays because I like to keep my DDs on a certain schedule: DDs=Tu/Th/Sa, UDs=We/Fri/Su with a MD on Monday so I don't do too many DDs together and burn myself out on it. Its in the Alternate Day Diet book...not sure of the page. Dr Johnson said that is acceptable if you like to keep to a certain day schedule of DDs - whatever keeps you on track.

Thank you. Looks like, as with any plan, I'm going to have to get the book. The website was informative, but just on a basic level.

![]() Glad you are here! I don't even know if Dr. J mentions the MD in the book. ??![]() Although the book is soooooo worth reading IMHO. MD is something I learned about here on the forum. It's how you change your rotation if you need to for a special occasion. You average your calculated calories between the UD and DD and the in between number is what you can eat on a MD to change the rotation. Take for instance your birthday is on a Saturday and that Saturday falls on a DD. Bummer. We can't have that! JUDD is soo forgiving, it won't allow it! So, you have a regular DD on Thursday as you would because it falls into your rotation. Then, instead of having an UD on Friday, you make it a MD and make Saturday an UD so you can Par-TAAAAAeeeeeyyyyy!!! Get it? Usually the best way to fit a MD in is this order: DD, MD, UD if you can. Any questions?? Anyone??? It keeps you on plan. trust me, it does. JUDD rocks!

Yes, MD is medium day, and is UD+DD divided by 2.
BUT, you should not insert these willy nilly, and shouldn't do them in the first 2 weeks at all until you get the sirt-1 enzymes flowing well, since they can cause stalls for some people. A few have been able to use them right from the start with no issues, but others have problems. So just wanted you to be aware of that. I never read the book, just read a TON on this forum. Welcome! |

Tina is right! Thanks tina!
It is best if you can stick to your numbers and do the rotation for the first 2 weeks. When you read the book (and I know you will![]() ) you will learn about the amazing SIRT1 gene in our bodies that becomes activated within the first 2-3 weeks of doing alternate DD rotations. It has so many benefits you will want to learn about them. One is that when it builds up to the max (usually after 2 weeks in most people) it acts as a fat blocker and will not allow extra calories to be stored as fat. It also works to burn and flush away existing stored fat. Cool, huh? But there are many other healing benefits and if you keep reading on this forum you will find some great articles. Try to stick to your UD/DD numbers the first 2 weeks if you can. ![]() |

I think Dr Johnson addresses the "in between day" in the FAQ section in Chapter 11. We just call it a MD here though.

There's a lot of info on the science behind it and he gets into other things like exercise, carbs, protein, fats, etc. and there are a lot of DD recipes in the back but its a fairly quick and informative read. Not a ton more info than on the website but its good to have as a reference. I love this forum though because you can't find better people and there are so many success stories I love to read. The only trouble I had sticking to JUDDD in the past was lack of support as I am very OCD about having an outlet to discuss my diet plan and there wasn't much out there but now there is and it is making all the difference!

Kimberino! It kind of like one of those old music videos where our hero wanders up a deserted alley, walks through an ancient and broken door, and finds a totally rocking party going on, isn't it? As far as appetite goes, and I am also a big eater, I suggest you read the DD Recipes thread and plan both your DD and UD menus. I am guessing from your avi that your calculated DD calories are below 500. Start at 500 and, if you are losing well there, stay there (many of us are having great success around 500 cals). If 500 cals is too extreme at first, have a plan to go higher (try to stay under 50% of your calculated UD cals). As the sirtuin enzymes build up in the body, and was you get used to the rotation, most people develop appetite suppression and can phase down to much lower DDs. Also, saying (out loud if it helps) "I can eat that tomorrow." really helps. Then again, you may surprise yourself and handle low DDs from the beginning. Many do. Ir took me one DD to break a 2.5 month LC stall. 3 months on LC - 7 pounds gone. 3 months on JUDDD - 18 pounds gone (and I am a slow loser) Have Fun!

Welcome Kimberino!! I'm new to JUDDD too...so I'm no expert...I just wanted to say I can relate to your feelings...
It's been a week for me now...I had an initial loss the first few days...and now I'm staying at 175 for 3 days now...i'm hoping for a whoosh soon! Some kind of "magic" is supposed to kick in after 2 or 3 weeks...so I'm going to at least go that long before making any judgements! THere sure are a lot of nice folks here! Quote:

Yes, it does seem daunting to have my goal for a DD to be 396, after scarfing as much food into my maw as I possibly could on any given LC day. However, as I mentioned, even though LC got me where I am today, I believe I may have maxed out on its potential.
So, here's to new things. Thank you all for the encouragement and the welcome! I've loved sifting through all the threads and you all are incredibly supportive...looking forward to being able to contribute. |

Hi Kimberino, My guess is that you could go as high as 500 cals on your DD to start with. Enjoy the ride and be prepared for the bouncing scales.

Hi Kimberino, Im new to this woe also...have just finished my first 2 weeks and am loving seeing the scale move again! My down number is 397 and I've been able to stick to it pretty well. I divide my 60 calorie carbmaster yougurt between breakfast and lunch time....snack on zero calorie Mt. Olive sugar free bread and butter chip pickles (love 'em) and then try and eat a yummy dinner. Usually chicken breast and steamed broccoli...even had some baked beans with that dinner the other night.
So many possibilities if you have the time to plan it. I can even get a nighttime snack in there too! Love this WOE and hope you will too!

Welcome! I'm new here as well. I am doing my first DD today. I've just come off of a fourth round of hcg and was trying paleo/leptin reset and, I guess, I wasn't doing it right because I was not stabilizing and just kept going up. I'm kinda thinking I have problems with dairy. I LOVE dairy and don't want to give it up; so, I thought I would try the JUDDD woe for at least two or three weeks and hope that I will remain stable and enjoy the freedom that this woe seems to offer. I need something that I can stick with as a way of life eating and am hoping that I've found it.

Wow, y'all are so kind! As suggested above, I will start at 500 rather than the 396 - see if that works.
I'll keep you updated. JUDD here I come, ready or not. |
