"/whatever gets me in a 6-8"

While reading Nancy/gosomeold's "Breakthrough" thread this morning I noted the size-6-8 goal in her signature. And I had a major AHA moment. How do I know that 135--or 133--or 137 should be my goal weight? What do I truly care about (besides good health, long life and world peace,of course)? HOW MY CLOTHES FIT.

I have several closets full of beautiful clothes. Pieces I love. About 1/3 of them fit ok--not great, but ok. The rest just hang there and taunt me.
But my weight has been so all over the map the last few years that I don't even know at what point these clothes will start fitting again. Plus, I've begun a serious exercise program and hope to build some muscle. I know from the last time I worked out with weights that this can mean smaller clothes at higher scale weight.

Anyway, as of today I'm going to select 2 or 3 pieces of clothing that are tight (but not obscene)and make fitting into them my next goal. I'll still weigh myself occasionally because it's fun to see the scale #'s go down--and the lower #s *are* signposts of progress--but I'm done worrying about the bounces.

When the Chanel jacket I bought on eBay for 1/10th of the retail price actually buttons around my waist, I'll consider my JUDDD-ing a major success, whatever number shows on my scale

THANK-YOU, NANCY!!!

I did this 9 years ago when I started my weight loss journey. I had a goal dress I wanted to wear to graduation. When graduation came, it was too big. So sad. I like having a goal piece of clothing. It is fun to try it on every week and see how much better it is fitting.

This is a wonderful way to look at weight loss, CR!

It's great to look good in your clothes and wear the things you want to wear. We all get caught up in the scale number, but if I got to a really low weight and didn't feel good or had to work hard all the time to sustain a certain number on the scale, what good is that? Better to feel good and look good and enjoy what I'm eating.

It will be fun for you to try on those clothes and see how your progress is going. One day, they will fit! I look forward to the day when you post a picture of yourself in that jacket - all buttoned up!

Yayyy Nancy for helping us rethink how we measure our weight loss success.

Yes, I do this with jeans. Every time I go to the thrift store to buy new jeans (because the ones I have are too large) I deliberately buy at least one pair that are far too tight, won't even go up all the way. I hang those in the closet and try them on periodically.

I'm in sizes I haven't been in since my early 20's. I have no idea what size will be with what weight. I've thrown a number in my stats but I'm not married to the idea of that number.

Right now I have size 13 jeans hanging in the closet. That's a biggie because 13 is what I wore in high school (and thought I was soooo fat). I'm looking so forward to fitting into those!

I had that AH-HA moment a few decades ago when a friend went to a weight loss clinic. They kept pressing her for her goal weight. She finally shouted, "Listen! I don't care if I weigh 576 pounds as long as I fit into a size 4!"

Chelsea, I am so glad I was able to offer a new perspective!

I have always done this too. I somehow skipped over wearing 8's. Just waited until my 10's were so big before shopping again and lo and behold I fit into 6's. But then the 6's started getting a bit baggy in places so I either needed to gain a bit to fill them out or shoot for the 4's. I decided on the latter and JUDDD got me there.

This was my original goal skirt. I over shot it a bit (65lb loss)

I'm up about 15 from the after pic there.

Last summer I found a size 8 stretchie denim skirt at Old Navy. It fit. but not for long once the weight started coming back. My goal is an 8 without it being stretchie. I think my stats say 150 but I think I'd really like to see the 140's someday!

wow!
and I agree!
that's why my stats only show a tiny goal that is within sight. I used to contribute to depression with out of sight goals that I wouldn't reach, they didn't have any meaning to me after a while but the sense of failure was a killer.
I want to wear clothes that look good, I want to be healthy and feel good, and the scale won't be the determining factor there.

Yup, this is how I look at it, too. I honestly don't care what I weigh in the end as long as I fit into the tiny clothes.

I just bought a bunch of 10's I really like. Now, with this semi-whoosh, they are getting loose. I don't want to spend more (even at thrift stores) until I am sure I have arrived in a place I plan to stay.

THAT sounds like a plan!!!

Golly whiskers, I never expected to see the day I would expect to buy a smaller size!

I just put on a pair of shorts from last summer that were too tight to be comfy and they are comfortable loose. Yippee. I had worn jeans today that were too big and therefore too hot and when we got home I went digging for acceptable shorts. Woo hoo! Got something for these warm spring days. But expect to have to hit goodwill for new jeans when it cools off in the fall.

Don't forget you can alter a bunch of those clothes to accommodate some loss when you don't want to buy a new size you intend to blow by anyway.
I took in several blouses along the side seams and darts. I'm not a fabulous seamstress, but I can sew in a straight line.
I have also taken in the booty seam and inseam on pants.
some pants you can cut a couple slits in the inside of the waistband on the sides or back and insert a piece of elastic inside and sew down to bring in the waist with only a few stitches. A pear shaped friend taught me that one..pants can be bought to fit the hips then adjust the waist in.
I have a pile of skirts on my sewing machine right now to take in enough to get by.
Scared to try on the shorts I have stored.
I alter things a lot anyway because I am busty and have no booty as it stands. A cheap sewing machine is a life saver.

Lovely thread again!

Wonderful to see this attitude. I wrote in another thread today that "we lose weight to look slimmer, not to weigh less."

I love the photos, (I actually love the skirt too!)
