After induction question ?

Hello everyone, you are all so helpful. I have not posted as I have been learning and reading the book, this forum and doing it. JUDDD is GREAT!

I am losing on induction. The Juddd calculator has me at 326 on DD, and 1646 on UD.

I am 5 pounds from goal and would not want to lose more than 5 more if I have to. I have a hard time with the 326 DD, but I am doing it. Not liking it. I would like to raise the percentage, but want to get to goal also.

The calculator has increments of percentages. At the end of the 2 week induction, (this Friday)...am I supposed to go up to 25% instead of 20%? Or do you just pick a percentage and go with it?

I have read these forums, the website and the book. It does not state what percentage to go to after induction.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Dawn

Dawn, to tell you the truth, most of us start JUDDD holding to 500 calorie Down Days, as he sets that number as the *Induction* level of DD calories, to get us started off on the right foot.

And many of us can't stand to be that low, so we've started out even higher calories than that on DDs, just to sort of work into it, and then go lower as we get used to it. Well, except for Beeb who lost weight on JUDDD so fast that she was at goal before she ever got a chance to go lower on Down Days.

So if you are doing lower calorie DDs than the induction 500, you are off to a better start than a lot of us did.

Now, the percentages he gives us to choose from are simply percentages of our *Normal* Up Day calories, those the calculator gives us from its formula. So it's up to you what percentage of calories you want to do your DDs at. Obviously, the lower the bit faster you will lose some weight, and the more intensely you may trigger the health benefits of fasting (maybe)..... But you can have DDs of 500 calories for your entire journey on JUDDD, and that will be just fine too.

All of this to say, it's up to you. If you can get reasonably used to the low calories you are presently doing, that's great. And most of us do get very, very comfortable with out low calorie Down Days. But if you think it would be easier and more pleasant to do DDs of 500 calories, you will be joining a number of us, and that works pretty darned well too.

Good luck to you. It's a marvelous program with so many benefits in addition to mere weight loss, that it's well worth following.

Hi Pat,
Thanks so much for the information. I really appreciate your help. The calculator for my height , age, weight tells me at 30% I would be 491 calories. Would that be close enough? Do you think it would slow my loss?

I would love to go up to 491 tomorrow. I think I could maybe enjoy the down days some with that many calories.

Thanks so much!

Do it, Dawn. I doubt you will notice any slow down in weight loss over just holding to the 326 calories you've been doing. And it makes for a slightly more generous day, allows for a greater variety of possible food choices to make meals from.

You can always cut back if you find you have to, but I'll bet you'll be just fine! Enjoy your DD tomorrow!

Hi Dawn, Beeb and Sophie! Thank you for the welcome here at JUDDD. Sophie, you are so right! I do enjoy the UP days! Thanks for the welcome. I don't post much, still learning and reading, but I read all your posts. You are all so helpful.

I have questions on figuring calories, like for big pots of chili, and spaghetti sauce. When I cook dishes like this in bulk, also home made salsa, done in a big stock pot too. I use Fit Day, and it does not help with these foods. I looked over a couple of the other sites mentioned on the sticky but did not join them. So how would you go about figuring calories for up days?

Dawn

You can always figure out that one ounce of lean protein, like lean ground turkey or lean ground beef is appx. 50 calories. If you are using a jar of tomato sauce, the calories per serving are there and adding chopped up veggies or mushrooms would add such a minimal amount of calories you can estimate. If you put in canned beans, the calorie count will be on the can.

I would estimate that in a cup of sauce or chilli you are getting 3 ounces of meat and one serving of everything else. That's how I would do it.

You could also just count the calories for the bulk ingredients as you put them in. Like 16 ounces of ground beef, etc. Then divide it up.

You will get so good at this after a while it will become second nature.

Calorie count has a recipe analyzer. It can tell you how much is in all of it or it can break it up into your specific servings. The things with Juddd is even with bulk items calories need to be calculated and servings watched.

I love the recipe analyzer. It will also store it for later use.

Thank you Yam-Yam and Maria. I will certainly check out the calorie counter in the morning. I know when I make salsa I pick the tomatoes and use like 13 or more in a batch. The chili and beans I can figure. I appreciate the warning to keep watch on it and get the calorie count close.

At the moment I really do not like counting calories, but I can figure I will get as used to it one day, as I did carbohydrates. I have never counted calories, only carbs. Sometimes I am amazed at the amount of calories in things.

You are so helpful!

Dawn - ************ is a free site and has a really easy to use recipe builder on it. I put in all my ingredients when I make a big dish, like chili, and then put in the number of servings. It calculates it for me. Much easier to use than ******, which I still love and use for tracking my weight loss.

to the Boards! Nice to have you here! You have gotten some great advice. Just wanted to second the idea that you probably won't notice much of a difference in upping to 490-500 DDs.

Amber, thank you for the information on ************. I am looking into the sites and you make it sound pretty good.

DD80, you gave me the courage to go ahead and add some extra protein into tonight's meal. I will give it a go.

Thank you ladies!
