Supplement questions

I went to my dr. appt. this morning and hypothyroid was confirmed. I'm to stay on the current dosage of levothyroxine for 6-8 weeks then come back and "probably" have it increased.

R.A. and Lupus were ruled out!

He also recommended 600-800 IU Vitamin D, 1200 mg Calcium, and a good multivitamin.

I take women's One-A-Day which seems to have most of what I need. I was taking another one from Whole Foods but it only had 33% of the recommended amount of iron, and I was a little low on iron so I switched. The One-A-Day has 100%.

Does anyone have suggestions for the Vitamin D and Calcium? I also need to start taking magnesium for "ahem" other issues. I've read it's better to get a magnesium that ends in "ate" rather than in "ide" for those issues.

TIA for any responses!

I recommend swansonsvitamins.com. They usually have a coupon...no tax...and $4.99 shipping (unless coupon). They sometimes have buy 1 get 1 deals on the vitamin D and I stock up. They have great prices, quality products, and great customer service. They don't only carry their brand too - if you are loyal to a brand.

If you don't like a product of theirs, send it back within a year and they will refund you. I've done it a few times. There have been 2-3 times that I've ordered off they B1G1 deals, and they didn't send one. I emailed and they happily and quickly sent it.

Vitamin D should be the D3 (cholecalciferol) form, and I find that it's better in liquid form with a base of medium chain triglyceride since it's more bioavailable. For me, there was a noticeable difference in energy levels and mood taking the same dosage amounts but in liquid form as opposed to the capsules and tablets I was previously taking. As for magnesium, I use Natural Calm, which I take at the end of the day closer to bedtime. I find the lemon flavor kind of tasty, but it could just be me. It's definitely been helpful for regularity and helps with better sleep too. I also use One a Day for my multi, and it seems to be fine for me but I know a lot of people like ones with even higher % RDAs of everything. I don't take additional calcium though, so not sure about that.

Yes, D should be D3 and should be taken with fat. Caprylic Acid is a good medium chain triglyceride to take with it and it's great for your metabolism and for yeast! (Which a lot of people have issues with...especially us autoimmune people).

I take magnesium every now and then and I've taken a "flexitol," but that's just what my mom gave me. I've bought just the regular kind before, which I think is citrate. I've also gotten the complex before.

I agree with Swanson vitamins also, although I have been buying the generic whole food brand at my local whole foods, for cost savings. I found a Cal-Mag combo. I like it because I get both in one supp.

I take liquid D3 except in the summer when I make sure to get out in the sun a good 10-15 minutes per day.

When I need Calcium I take Rainbow Light brand. I take their Women's One multi as well....they are food-based multivitamins which I prefer to take. It does only have 33% of the RDA for iron and when I need iron I take it separately as it's not good to take if you don't really need it. When I feel I'm low I'll add it to my diet and start cooking in cast iron again. LOL

Agreed!

I also wanted to add that Fry's (Kroger) has some good deals on vitamins. I just got 2 bottles of Ester C for $6.99 (minus $4.00 for coupons, so $2.99) and 2 bottles of fish oil for $10.99 (minus $5.00 in coupons, so 5.99).

So glad u came clear on lupus and R A.
I take the the coral calcium, cheap stuff at wal mart.
And the mag. will help the BM's. Like magic.
I also have used the natural calm powder? Truthfully it's like drinking strong
Alkerselser, misspelled sorry.
But it works for lots of things in our body's. Nerve endings, helps to sleep.
I need to buy it again instead of just popping the mag. Pills u can buy.
We need flex seed oil too. Doctor makes to take it. Good luck.
