How To "Tell" It's Water Weight

I thought about this today after the scale was up a bit more on my "morning after UD" weigh-in than it's usual 2 pounds. I ate lots of salty foods yesterday (corned beef, for one) and I figured I would be retaining water this morning.

Then I started looking for the "water weight" and where it shows up on my body. After a few gazes at myself in the mirror and areas on my body it was very easy to see the water gain.

Face.....fewer wrinkles around my eyes and "puffer" facial features. Sure sign of water gain.

Fingers...Hard time getting my rings off to take a shower.

Feet...They hurt today, and were tighter in my shoes.

Midsection....Puffing belly.

These are the sure signs I will now look for to REMIND myself when I start to get a little "concerned" that the jump in the scale is bit over the normal 2 pound gain I have after an UD. It's water gain, plain and simple!!

PS...Don't mind the "less facial wrinkles" part, though!

I can always tell because my left foot gets puffy. If it is like a marshmallow on top, I'm retaining water.

Well, I am sure the scale will be even higher in the morning because I have no ankles and my hands are so swollen my fingers are red. I have to figure out what is causing the water retention. It isn't too much salt since I do not add salt to anything and the foods I had today were not high in sodium. Oh well, it will go away in a few days so not to worry. Since I can't make a fist due to swollen fingers I can't get into a fight. That is a positive. Oh and I sure wish my face would puff up and hide the wrinkles but NO, it has to be my ankles and hands.

Not so much the wrinkles in my face but the wrinkles.....in my belly. LOL (After 10 babies that skin is never going to smooth out. *sigh*). And I can definitely tell when I'm exercising. I can feel it in my muscles whenever I do something high impact....it hurts!

Adi,

I think you said you do keep an eye on blood oxygen and heart function? The way your bod loves to hold onto fluid worries me.

Especially with all those baby goats depending on you!!!

Same here with the water, up 5lbs overnight. I am down 2 today, not as much as i'd hoped for but with as much as i ate, the calories, the carbs, the salt, the liquor, im really not surprised. Im very puffy all over and my muscles in my arms look huge!!!!

Oh, that sodium!

But as long as I know it's water weight, and not fat, I'm good to go!

I press my index finger just above the inside of my ankle, and if there is an indentation, I know it's water.

The longer the indent stays obvious, the more water is in your body.

Having just traveled by plane for 8 hours from Costa Rica, I can tell you that it will take another two days before MY swelling goes down.

In general, I also notice that if I haven't had a BM in a day or two, I start retaining water. Seems like it is all connected down there. Once you clear out your intestines, your kidneys start pumping out the extra H2O.

I have been checked for anything and everything by different doctors over the years and none have found anything wrong with me or a reason for the water retention. I never had this problem before my 22 year old son was born when I was 40 so I credit it to him.
Thanks for the concern though. I refuse to take diuretics even though they work I do not want to become dependent on them. And this morning, my hands are so swollen I can barely type.
Have to run to the store to pick up some more lemons. They do help.

I can definitely tell when it's water weight for me as well. My entire midsection bloats up, and when I wear any pants or jeans that aren't loose or super stretchy, it gets really tight basically the entire section from the knees up. I sure wish I had the smoothing out of wrinkles on my face (and my hands) though! Would make the water weight somewhat more tolerable.

I have water retention issues, but they are not as bad since I got my thyroid straightened out. Definitely hormone related...used to gain 10 lbs of water every month...seriously...10 lbs.

Still, my body likes to release all water at like 1 am. I could stop drinking water at 3pm and I'd pee out 2 lbs of water at 1am.
